It was a BP game.

Serious question...How else was he supposed to use it?

Obviously as soon as they scored a run in the 9th, Hader should've been up in game 1 because we just play 162 one-game seasons.

Or maybe he should've used Seth or Montero or King. You know, the guys he already had to burn because he literally didn't have a starting pitcher.

I do think they were trying to protect Tayler Scott's arm or he could've come in but once the tying run got on deck it was only going to be Hader.

I will say… this thread will be glorious to read through the day after we raise the trophy.

Yeah I truly have no idea why people are so upset. Mind blowing really.

Those bullpen games are difficult to win. And they won and continue to be red hot. Why can't we ever be happy?

I'm not upset. I'm just pointing out that Hader has not been *amazing*

Can't really fault Espada last night.

We'd be furious if he used his leverage guys to close down an 8 run lead … so why are we getting mad at him?

is not necessarily a bad thing

Yeah if he's sore today by all means rest him. He's played almost every game this year. I imagine they'll rest him tomorrow as well and let him heal up

A roughly 4.0 ERA for a star $95M closer is not good

ERA isn't the whole story. It certainly works for your narrative but it's not the end all be all.

If he's not blowing saves IDGAF how many runs he gives up.

I'm with you - best record in MLB the entire month of June and a 6-2 record on the current road trip- all without Tucker and Verlander. But folks on here are never satisfied. Guess the Astros need to win every game for that to happen.

Save conversions isn't the whole story. He ones up with a boatload of run margin generally

Having someone ready in the bullpen before the seventh baserunner reached in the 9th would have been a decent start.

"Save conversions isn't the whole story" of a closer right after referencing ERA and ignoring all the advanced stats is sure a position.

Astros hierarchy of reported injury:

1. "Scheduled day off" = out 3-5 days
2. "Discomfort" = out 2-4 weeks
3. "Contusion, Neck Pain or the use of the word Gimpy" = out 1-3 months
4. "Bruise" = out 3+ months
5. "Mild Strain" = out 6-12 months, likely Tommy John surgery
6. "Tweaked it" = out 1 to 2 years on rehab
7. "Couldn't move it/put any weight on it" = retiring from baseball

Yeah I would care about a closer being able to convert games when we're not ahead by multiple runs, like in the playoffs.

He gives up a massive amount of homers

I didn't catch the game because I was on the road but how many of those runs was he responsible for? Just one right?

And I saw the home run. In no world should Correa have been able to turn on that pitch. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap and shrug your shoulders.

Sometimes things happen. It's baseball.

When you have 39 IP it's still a small enough number that a couple of runs one way or the other makes a big difference in ERA. He's given up a couple of HR that didn't change the outcome of the game and that hits his ERA.

The rest of his numbers look fine.

8. "Played catch, will face live batters soon " - still 3 months out

When he's asked to come in with a lead and make sure we win, he does. Fifteen times in a row. Also has had multiple more-than-three-out appearances that helped result in wins.

Every advanced / expected metric also says he's been even better than that excellent success rate. Although I sense you may not believe in advanced stats.

Yeah. It was well inside at 97 mph. I don't see how he hit it at all much left kept it fair.

Yes he has been an excellent closer, the best in the league, other teams are surely jealous of his impressive 4.0 ERA nightly home run where he converts a save while we're up 5 runs

And again… the home run to Correa was just a great hitter hitting an almost impossible pitch. Sometimes you have to tip your cap.

No it wasn't, it was a stupid pitch selection to a guy who can't hit low outside and he throws it up and in
