So, I think there is some disconnect. While I don't think Abreu is any good anymore, there is a difference between when a baseball guy evaluates a player and a fan evaluates a player.

How many times have you heard a former baseball player say a hitter is close based on what they are seeing and within a week the player breaks out? The fan just sees the outs and says this guy is sucking. This situation happens ALL the time.

So, you can't just say because Espada said he's looking better or hitting the ball better, or whatever he says that he's lying. Despite his bad play since coming back, he has hit some balls well over 100+mph.

Point is, baseball guys and fans evaluations are usually different.
score a big one -- a really big one -- for the fans

they nailed the Abreu situation

Brown/presser on 790 saying he led the process of Abreu's DFA

- Jon will get most of the ABs
- Dubon will play more at 1B
- Loperfido probably back up by 21st, may get some 1B opportunities
- not looking to trade more prospects for rentals
- doesn't like signing guys until age 38 and older (asked about Tucker i think)

Doobie getting the start at 1B tonight. I guess that's an option we'll see more often. I remember several on here calling for this in April.

I'd rather see Loperfido most days, but this is at least a step in the right direction.

Yeah, they'll give him some starts there until they make an addition. They don't want him there long term.

That's my dog. Shame he's too valuable to trade but not valuable enough to play more.

Does the Abreu release send a message to the team that people need to get their **** together or they too can be on the chopping block?

Obvious exceptions like Altuve, Tucker etc don't count

I heard he tried to throw a baseball at him, but lost the grip on it while picking it up and booted it towards 2nd base.

I feel a breakout game for the offense today.... which against this pitcher would be 3-4 runs.

I do want to say that I hope that Abreu gets whatever help he needs for whatever is ailing him. Whether it's mental, or mechanics I hope he does well. Just not against us

You missed the entire point of what I was saying and the entire conversation.

Everyone knew he was terrible, but that's not what the conversation was about.

Guy is getting $30M to not play baseball, kind of like a college coach I know for a higher sum. Just retire!

I wish he would've juiced while in Houston. My official opinion is he was the worse the Astros have ever handed out. And I'll be the first to admit I was excited about getting him last year. Granted, I never watched the white Sox and didn't know a ton about the back of his baseball card

He started hot but he was horrendous in Boston. I would stick with what we have and be looking at the trade market if it's me.
Not me. I would 100% go get him and platoon him with Singleton.

Check the vs LHP #s

If you take Cooper's .377 xwOBA vs LHP and add it to Singleton's .352 xwOBA vs RHP then you have ~.360 xwOBA hitter at 1B the majority of the time. That would rank 8th in baseball for 1B just behind guys like Pasquantino & Naylor.

Then use the prospect capital to get arms.

What do you have to lose?
The more I think about this, the more obvious it is. We can go from near the bottom of baseball to top 10 by using league minimum guys. That perfectly counteracts the wasted money on Abreu. Unless we're 99% sure we're going to get Alonso we'd be stupid not to. And even then Alonso is 13th in xwOBA. This combo would be better based on expected data.

If this team had its head on straight, Hummel could have been called up 2 days ago and played his first game 3 miles from Alcatraz.

I didn't hear the audio but those bullets are the most GM sounding Brown has sounded since becoming GM. Maybe he's finally winning some influence? Fingers crossed.
