What would suck about Bregman leaving is up until this season it sounded like it would be a done deal him and Altuve being lifers.

Correa and springer you knew that you needed to enjoy them while it lasted. But Bregman felt like a guy you could re-sign because it's not like he's been an all star guy. I know WAR says different but .260 and 20 HR in today's baseball doesn't scream 30 MM per year for 8 years.

Maybe not 8/240 but too many guys like Springer, Xander, Machado, Semien, Goldy, Freeman, Judge, Bryant, etc got paid wild money as 30+ year olds. I think the market is going to give him more than 150 M.

The connected guys can chime in, but my guess is we floated what we are thinking and Bregman and his agent disagree and don't think retiring here is worth passing on the open market after next year.

I don't like what it appears he's doing, but I also wouldn't want to pay him 30MM a year for more than 5 either if I was the Stros. It's business at the end of the day. Unless the Dbacks have communicated through back channels what they're willing to do, the "Arizona property" is irrelevant outside of him communicating he's intends to ignore an early extension and explore free agency.

He's from New Mexico and has family out there - he's worth ballpark $50m, and will likely retire in less than 8 years. Why is it interesting he has a house where he'll probably live after baseball?

I own a farm I don't live at, but do plan to once I retire in a few decades.
Nice humble brag

LOL - right now that place ain't nothing but a long *** list of projects to do. In 20 years it may be worth bragging about if I live long enough to finish it.
only someone who already owns property would so nonchalantly dismiss owning property…

Didn't Dana say last year that extending Altuve AND Bregman were a priority?

What changed since then?
AgLA06

My guess is Alex's agents valuation of what Alex's contract could be and Alex prioritizing that over retiring here (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Nothing. Dana says many things that often are contradicted later. Seems par for the course.

Yea we will get pissed off contract year Bregman and milk every little bit of his prime and probably let him walk.

And I'm fine with that tbh.

Do we think Zach Dezenzo will be ready to take over? Or maybe there is a chance Matthews can slide over like Bregman did. We usually had bodies ready to step up in the past. 3B worries me a little.
This is our approach ride or die. We didn't really have a CF to replace George but had guys step up elsewhere. I assume it's a similar approach here. I've already suggested my approach for getting out ahead of these issues but it is what it is. Not a problem until next year anyway.

Yup. He talks a lot.

the shame for Bregman...

he would be walking away from a surefire jersey retirement (in the rafters) if he plays another 4 or 5 years in Houston

maybe just another 3 or 4 years

That goes for every GM or coach or player.

Anyone who doesn't take what they say with a huge grain of salt is incredibly naive.

In what way? 5.3 WAR, 32 HR, 103 RBI, 37 SB, OPS 128, very solid CF. It's a very similar set of metrics.
Farmer1906

His offensive metrics weren't anything special. The gap between Tucker's wRC+ and Julio's is the same as Julio and Austin Hays. I think there is a solid argument Luis Robert was on par with Julio and he finished 12th.
MaxPower

Well this is why most of them don't talk a lot. I like that he seems more open but he should be more reserved. Last year he should have just said we have reached out to their agents and left it at that. That conveys the message needed without implying it's going to get done.

Julio had a 3 week period where he essentially never made an out and that boosted him both numerically and in voter eyes. There is no doubt about that. The rest of his season was more pedestrian.

But on the whole they weren't that far apart.

Tucker had a WAR of 5.4 (push), 29 HR (in more games, and he fell off at the end so nod to JR), 112 RBI but in more games (push), 30 SB and 5 CS (JR was 37 and 10, push), OPS+ 142 (Tuck by a decent margin).

The more advanced metrics say Tucker was better but it's not a huge margin. And those metrics don't take his admittedly sketchy defense into consideration.

Was Tucker better? Yeah but it's pretty close to me. It's not a shock voters like JRod better.

Just my $0.02

The advance metrics has him way better offensively. Tucker had a better BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, wOBA, BB%, K%, WPA, & RE24. It wasn't close.

Julio closes the gap defensively. To me it wasn't nearly enough to overcome to more important part of the game.

Also, playing 2 more games doesn't matter. Julio has 40 more plate appearances because he was near the top while Dusty kept messing around with Tucker a where from 3 to 6.

This is what I was referring to a few days ago when I said don't sleep on a trade involving guys on the Astros roster. There will likely be one more name we see floating around.

SP or RP perhaps?

Nah. I take that back.

Utility player behind Dubn?

Makes sense. Mlbtraderumors listed the Twins, Yanks, D-Backs, and Giants as potential suitors. I'd speculate maybe you could get a top 15 prospect in their system for him. One guy who looked interesting to me is Cory Lewis with the Twins. Doesn't throw hard but high spin and extension on fastball, very good curve and change but he also has a knuckleball that has been effective so far. That may seem like a novelty but I'm a proponent of having different types of pitchers to keep hitters from getting comfortable in a series.

The Braves bullpen is going to be ridiculous.

Agreed.

If Bregman gets crazy offers, tip your hat and thank him for the years. We probably got his prime.

Whoever signs him to a long contract will likely come to regret it, and that's simply not how our team is financially managed

Bregman is gonna fall in the Springer/Correa bucket. We love you bro, but we can't afford you.

Jose Altuve needs a solid gold statue at MMP.

MaxPower

My initial thought as well but Soroka is the main piece and he's a free agent after 2024. Given his injury history, they likely see Blummer as a more sure fire contributor. Blummer also has more control. Everyone else that was traded were replaceable pieces.

Springer I miss way more than Correa. IDK I just always liked the dude and he will always be an Astro to me. Maybe it's because he was here before the run started. Who knows.

But Breggy will be like Correa for me. I will miss him sure, but I think we can replace him.
