Those drop 5s with the 2-3/4 barrel were unreal. I still have one somewhere. I need to bust it out.

They were generally -4 for a while. I still have my original Easton B5 (ie- the Easton "Green") that I played with in HS in the early/mid-90's. It's a 33"/29oz. I also had one of the first carbon Easton Black Magic bats that was a 35"/31oz but threw it away a few years ago because it was cracked to hell.

It was around 1994-1995 or so, IIRC, that the first really stupid hot bats came out. Louisville Slugger had their TPX that was all white. That was when they went to the -5 that were just scary hot. At that time really Easton and Louisville Slugger were the only bats around. If Marucci or DeMarini were out they were very, very limited production. First I was ever aware of those brands was in softball.

But, yeah those bats from like 1993'ish to maybe 2005 were insane. About the same time Berkman had that season didn't Daylan Holt hit like 40 HR one year? I remember a game vs. t.u. where we beat them like 24-19 or something and there were nukes leaving the yard left and right.

34" -3 TPX was my jam.

My season starts in the spring. Let's go take BP.

That sounds right. The early 90s weren't as hot. The bats were more like clubs. They started to get more balanced (longer barrel). I found the pic of mine. It's a Redline which is supposed to be one of the hottest. Even after that era, the BESR ones were hot too. I think they talked about it in that video (watched it a while back).

I am so down. I swung in the cage the other day because my little softball players wanted to watch me hurt myself. I was surprised I was able to make decent contact. Way too line drives. Zero tanks.

My gosh Puma was a beast at Rice.

My 2nd job out of A&M was as an assistant SID at Rice that year. Unfortunately, I was assigned to cover volleyball and track, but we got to see the baseball team play some. One day, they beat Cincinnati 37-9 and Berkman had 13 RBI in that game.

The TPX's were basically rocket launchers. From freshman to senior year in high school (graduated HS in '97), I went from teal 31" 26 ounce to white 32" inch 27 ounce to red 33" 28 ounce. We also played around with some and popped the caps off, inserted tennis balls, and put the cap back on. Seemed to add more pop as well. Although one may have accidentally been used in a game in Wharton one time and my buddy hit a line drive up the middle, but the cap flew off and a tennis ball went flying out. Not a good time when we got back home. Lots of conditioning after that.

The biggest thing this thread has taught me is that I used way to long a bat when I was in little league and in high school.

Everyone is completely different in personal preference. Strength, hand quickness, distance from the plate, and offensive approach were just some things that dicated bat length for us. I swung the heaviest (longest) bat of anyone I knew. Only dropped down if were were facing someone throwing harder than 95mph that way I didn't have to cheat on a fastball.

Interesting. This was in the 90s? I thought cheating in baseball started in 2017.

I stood as close to the plate as I could because I could turn on the inside fastball so I didn't need the longer bats.

Speaking of cheating... I wanted to make a juiced wood bat. I drilled out the middle and filled it with chopped-up bouncy balls. Then sealed the end with matching wood, wood glue, and sawdust so you couldn't tell. It was a huge pain in the ass to make. Did it make a difference? I have no idea. The second swing I took cracked between the handle and barrel. I then proceeded to snap it over my knee (didn't take much effort). There was one random kid skating by watching him. The look of shock on his face was priceless.

This seems very strange. If Espada has not been allowed to interview elsewhere and they don't hire him they will have a very pissed off bench coach. And rightfully so.

That makes you think it's him. But he hasn't been named. Why?

This whole thing makes no sense.

Yes, that person was Dana. Whoops. Seems like something he should have known before speaking about it publicly.

I think the Mets and Padres kind of screwed up the market the last few years.

11/350 for Manny at age 30
11/280 for Xander at age 30
6/108 for Yu at age 36
10/341 for Francisco at age 28
8/162 for Brandon at age 30
3/130 for Max at age 37
2/87 for Justin at age 40

I know Chapman has an elite glove at 3rd. He's my favorite 3rd baseman to watch. But his offense is slightly above avg. 110 wRC+ in 2023, 110 from 21-23, and 118 for his career. 2018 was his only real elite season. If he's getting 150+ heading into his age 31 season then a Bregman extension is probably out of the question.

I just refuse to believe Bregman won't be even slightly cheaper to stay with one team and never worry about a contract his whole career.

What's happening is irrelevant. We're taking too long and it's because cranes an idiot and meddling. Oh and he loves bagwell and his bad advice. If we do sign him, we'll then likely have to complain that we paid too much so can't afford players. Or it took too long and we lost momentum. Or we'll start *****ing about who we extend, sign, don't extend, etc.
Crane is no idiot. He has his methods and he's gonna stick with them. Loyalty is not a factor with him.

I'm not paying market value (aka whatever the single stupidest, most desperate billionaire will pay) for Bregman. Maybe for Altuve I'd do that but not bregman.
