I went to look up the defensive #s and they were clearly the highest OAA in the AL and only second to the Brew Crew. To my surprise we were 2nd in the AL grouped closely with the Mariners & Rangers.
I'm pretty sure we take a hit when you factor in OF arms and framing. Our blocking, scooping (don't think savant tracks that) and throwing were all good tho.

I said it multiple times this season. I don't think we care. I really think we told our pitchers to focus on pitching and not worry about it. Couple that with really slow deliveries and a catcher who was getting older and slower and you get run on a lot.

As bad a season as maldy had the running was not on him. It was all on the pitchers. A bazooka couldn't have gotten many of those steals at 2nd

Pop time already separates the catcher out, so I'm guessing it's something to do with varying the start of delivery and average time of delivery from the pitcher.

Not only pop time, but they have gotten to the point where they track how close the runner is to second when they get the ball and how fast the runner is.

I thought Diaz and Maldy were both really close in pop time and arm strength and that both were near, if not in the top 5.
Am I misremembering? Could have sworn I saw that stat through the season.

Yet Diaz' numbers were nowhere near as bad the last time I checked.
Here's how it ended.
Diaz was 13th in MLB in caught stealing (top 15).
Diaz threw out 10 of 32 attempts to steal second.
Maldy threw out 11 of 70 attempts to steal second.
One could project that Diaz would have thrown out twice as many runners as Maldy if equal attempts.
This of course doesn't get into past balls or framing, or other stats that go into comparing catchers.

The justification for looking past his atrocious hitting, inability to frame pitches, high amount of past balls, and base runners on a merry go round was that he was handling the pitchers like a coach on the field / sports psychologist. He got lots of credit for it regardless of the result. Yet, none of the negatives of our pitching staff regressing throughout the year nor our inability to keep runners out of scoring position seem to fall to him.

The thing is, absolutely no one on this board, in Houston, or in Astros management thought he was the best option. Only Dusty did.
Man, a catcher can only do so much when a pitcher refuses to hold a runner on and the Astros organization refuses to make it a priority by not holding their pitchers accountable.
Maldy was bad, but his measurables in pop time and arm strength are on par with Diaz, maybe slightly less. So as far as throwing runners out, it's quite literally not on Maldy.
Maybe I made a childish "you hate him" comment, but the droning on, and on, and on all season and then trying to ascribe to him something the organization didn't seem to care about is just exhausting. People wanted him to voluntarily step down and then called him a bad guy for not doing it. So, maybe you don't hate him, but a guy that was trying his best, and by all accounts is a great teammate, got a crapload of hate this year because the only guy in Houston who had the daily roster power preferred him over Diaz.
I'm just ready to move on from the Maldy discussion and, honestly, the bashing. He did a lot of good for the organization. I dislike a lot of the bashing because he's just playing when his name is written on the card.
I'm not asking you guys to stop talking about how bad Maldy was, but can you give me a finite date in the future when you're going to stop griping about him?
