Espada makes sense but do the Astros need a shock to the system from outside the organization?

The #Rangers are considered the favorites to sign free-agent LHP Josh Hader, per @BNightengale

Its worked out so well for the Yankees, so why not follow that route?Mathguy64 said:
I get the feeling the Rangers are going to spend spend spend this offseason. They are going to try and be the Yankees and just throw money at everyone. Not to the Mets level but they are going to ignore the CBT implications.
Yep this will either work out great or crash and burn, i don't think there is any middle ground for themMathguy64 said:

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I sure thought the Yankees were the team said to have the most success in the last couple of decades before the Stros took the crown the last 7 years. Even if they underperformed compared to spend / expectations by everyone else.Wabs said:Its worked out so well for the Yankees, so why not follow that route?Mathguy64 said:

Ken Rosenthal on his Foul Territory podcast says he thinks Crane is making the call, not Brown.
Someone help me to understand why this shouldn't be the case? He's owner and de facto President of Baseball Ops until he decides not to be and Dana's boss, correct? I'm sure Dana and others have input, but why is he having final say somehow surprising or not correct?
Says Espada is the obvious candidate, but Crane may want a bigger candidate. Mentions Ausmus and mentions Ausmus failing twice.
I get this as well. Espada is the obvious candidate and you have him in the bag. I think Ausmus is a joke and nothing more than a made up hit by those that don't like Bagwell (right or wrong). Why wouldn't Crane explore bigger splash names if he knows he has Espada in the bag?
Didn't Baltimore go on a huge spending spree 10-15 years ago? And got nothing out of it. And look at the Angels for the past 2 decades. Spending massive amounts on every "hot" FA every year leads to nothing, more times than it leads to championships IMO.Farmer1906 said:AgLA06 said:Maybe I'm misremembering, but I sure thought the Yankees were the team said to have the most success in the last couple of decades before the Stros took the crown the last 7 years. Depends on how far back you go. KC & Cleveland flashed. Rangers had a nice 2 year streak. Before us the Red Sox were the top AL team if you look at a ~10-15 year window.

Whoa... didn't see this coming. That said, he's super well respected across baseball. This will be fun to keep track of.
It just depends on how the org is run. It is very clear. Crane is running the show. He's probably one of the most involved owners in baseball. If it ends up being someone other than Espada, it's not a great look for Brown. Its probably also the end of Espada's time here.AgLA06 said:Farmer1906 said:

They suck and screwed up with the Judge contract. That's why I said one of if not the best team before the Astros run (last 7 years).Farmer1906 said:
Everyone knows the Yankees were good. Once teams got smarter their spending spree dynasty ended. Where would you rank the over the last 10 years? Would they crack the top 5 in the AL?
