How about some of the potential Yuli Gurriel replacements? Josh Bell, Anthony Rizzo, or Ji Man Choi.
Gurriel, Abreu, and the rest were basically a who's who or mediocrity.
Contracts
Josh Bell: 1 year / 16.5 M with a 2nd year player option of 16.5 M
41.25 M per 1 WAR
Anthony Rizzo: 3 year / 51 M but the 3rd year is a club option at 17 M with a 6 M buyout (basically 2/40 or 3/51)
18.9 M per 1 WAR
Jose Abreu: 3 year / 58.5 M
NEGATIVE WAR
Yuli Gurriel: 1 year / 1.25 M
NEGATIVE WAR
Ji-Man Choi: 1 year / 4.65 M (3rd year of arbitration, would have had to trade to acquire)
NEGATIVE WAR
Josh Bell leads the way thanks to a strong finish in Miami.
Anthony Rizzo got brain damage or something. He didn't play after Aug 1st.
We all know Abreu's story.
Gurriel was about the same as last year which wasn't good at all.
Ji Man Choi came back from injury and couldn't do dick. Maldy like results. But he had great expected #s in his 117 PAs. Maybe there is something there.
Conclusion: We got the worst bang for our buck IMO. Now we have to just hope he somehow recovers at an advanced baseball age. It's not like the other options were much better. If we do it all over again, I think Rizzo is the play. We just gotta keep him from getting hit in the head. I hope Brown has someone else in mind if we need to pull the plug on Abreu mid-season. We can't afford another full-time starter that bad in 2024.
