Interesting, Astros head S&C coach is moving on. Can't tell exactly how long his tenure, but it was at least the last 3 seasons.

Dog is unimpressed

How about some of the potential Yuli Gurriel replacements? Josh Bell, Anthony Rizzo, or Ji Man Choi.
Gurriel, Abreu, and the rest were basically a who's who or mediocrity.

Contracts
Josh Bell: 1 year / 16.5 M with a 2nd year player option of 16.5 M
41.25 M per 1 WAR

Anthony Rizzo: 3 year / 51 M but the 3rd year is a club option at 17 M with a 6 M buyout (basically 2/40 or 3/51)
18.9 M per 1 WAR

Jose Abreu: 3 year / 58.5 M
NEGATIVE WAR

Yuli Gurriel: 1 year / 1.25 M
NEGATIVE WAR

Ji-Man Choi: 1 year / 4.65 M (3rd year of arbitration, would have had to trade to acquire)
NEGATIVE WAR

Josh Bell leads the way thanks to a strong finish in Miami.

Anthony Rizzo got brain damage or something. He didn't play after Aug 1st.

We all know Abreu's story.

Gurriel was about the same as last year which wasn't good at all.

Ji Man Choi came back from injury and couldn't do dick. Maldy like results. But he had great expected #s in his 117 PAs. Maybe there is something there.

Conclusion: We got the worst bang for our buck IMO. Now we have to just hope he somehow recovers at an advanced baseball age. It's not like the other options were much better. If we do it all over again, I think Rizzo is the play. We just gotta keep him from getting hit in the head. I hope Brown has someone else in mind if we need to pull the plug on Abreu mid-season. We can't afford another full-time starter that bad in 2024.

Re Abreu I can buy an improvement next season given how he seemed to improve after he had time off towards end of season and got treatment for his back. Not to mention he showed up in the postseason.

But man he's managed to set the bar low for himself after the regular season. Kinda genius, it won't take much to surpass in '24

Thanks for including Yuli and Abreu. Agreed that Brown needs to have someone in mind to replace him if necessary.

Today's Topic - Deals that Didn't Get Made...

These are the 3 that came to mind. I am sure there are more. If anyone is interested, throw some more out there are I will take a look.
Bryan Reynolds. I really like what I saw a year ago but didn't follow how he did this year. Thanks, Farmer!
Bryan Reynolds
I kind of doubt this one ever got even talked about. I believe NY asked around. Just know this deal would have cost way more than JV did. No way we wouldn't have gotten outbid if the Pirates decided to sell.

Contract: 8 year / 106.75 M with a club option of 20 M in 2031. Note: the first 3 years bought out 3 years of arbitration. The extension is basically 5 year / 75.25 M. Extremely team friendly!

WAR: 2.3
wRC+: 110

5.8 M per 1 WAR

Conclusion: Reynolds isn't a superstar, but he's a solid OFer who probably needs to move to a corner spot after back-to-back bad defensive seasons. His offense was a little down, but he's entering his age 29 season he should be a perennial 3-4 WAR type.

With all the outfielders mentioned before and in this post. Let's compare it to our own CFer.

Banana Puddin absolutely laps the field based on 2023. Even in just 115 games, his WAR crushes both Reynolds & Springer who both played 30-40 more games. Best offense. Best defense. Best baserunning (besides Marte but he sucks at everything else). Maybe he should be the guy we look at extending instead of Tucker (did I just say that?!)

I think Abreu will be alright in 2024, but probably smart to have a plan in case he's not. IMO this strengthens the case for bringing in a competent veteran backup C, which would allow Diaz to help cover 1B in this scenario... with Salazar backfilling the backup C duties.

I really hope we don't screw up this hire. If we hire the right guy (Espsada imo) they can help the dynasty continue for a lot longer, but if we hire an awful guy (Aussie) then this could the end of the dynasty. This hire is huge for the near future of the Astros. Just my 2 cents though.

This is laughable. The manager hire will not make or break this team. Dana putting together a good roster is much more important. Long term the bigger issue is our farm sucks and a lot of this core is a free agent either this year or next. Deciding who to extend, who to let walk and who to trade will be what decides the fate of this organization.

A good roster is obviously more important but we just spent a year and a game 7 seeing what a misguided manager can do to cap a season's potential. A good hire is not a nothingburger.

We also saw what a good manager can do with a flawed team (horribad bullpen) by making the right move like bringing in Montgomery while Donkey lets France surrender (who had a terrific season yes but was probably piling up more innings than he's used to) and don't think that can't screw with a young pitcher's head.

I keep adding more things I need to thank Dusty for!

I guarantee you I won't complain NEARLY as much about the new guy as I don't think there's a manger alive who would keep an .850 OPS guy rotting on the bench to play a guy setting records for batting futility.

There also isn't a manager alive who would bench a guy with a nearly .900 OPS and when he DID play he would bat him 7th or 8th.

Finally, there isn't a manager alive who would keep trotting out an unheralded rookie to go 0-30+ at bats.

Whoever it is will EASILY surpass the above criminally insane decisions.

Also 2001 WS and this year's WS are played on the same dates.

Also, GWB threw out the first pitch in 2001, and is throwing the first pitch tonight.

Spooky stuff for Halloween season!

They won't. They're playing a D Backs team that's just happy to be there. One of the worst representatives ever as it relates to the regular season.

Rangers will have to **** up royally to not win this.
