Those oblique injuries are really debilitating. Hope it's minor, because i don't really see shooting up thru it. It's a "forget swinging a bat, twisting enough to wipe your own ass kills" injury.

I'd be interested in how they determine the +/- impact.

G2 went 9 for Az 1 for Tex.

This shows 8 missed calls. I agree with the 3 listed as being missed calls that all went to Az. However, the #2 was a makeup for the blow call early to him and should have balanced. We also know several misses pointed above from Scherzer.

In the UmpsScoreCards, a missed call is 1.5" or more from the Zone.

I thought the Ump did a decent job balancing his misses. Especially to Moreno in the B9. He missed a pitch both ways and IMO became a non-factor. Even if you try to say at 3-1 a missed Ball has psychological damage, it would certainly change the hitter's approach at 2-2, and he likely swings at a close pitch #5.

It's purely based on run expectation for a generic team in a generic inning.

For example, a 3-2, 2 out, bases loaded ball called a strike is always +1.7 runs to the pitching team, even if roid era Barry Bonds was due up next.

Overall favor is the sum of that for all missed calls.

The "most impactful" are the 3 individual pitches with the highest run expectancy changes.

I'm very conflicted on what to do the rest of the series. I had to miss games 1 and 3, couldn't post and only check the game cast every now and then bc of work. I watched game 2 and posted, and the rangers got their downs blown in. I didn't miss a game all playoffs until the world series. Do I not watch tonight and see how it goes? This is tough.
You watch.

Watch I shall, but I will say that if things start going south in a hurry then I will turn it off and follow on my phone.

May i suggest the mute option. It's hard but it's worked for me all post season. As soon. As AZ does something good, hit mute.
NukeAg10

I'll explore this option.

I'd almost rather have a lineup of

Carter
Semian
Seager
Garver
Grossman
Jung
Heim
Lowe
Tavares

I feel like that really optimizes the handedness matchup and still protects Seager. I have felt like having Carter potentially getting in base ahead of Semi and Seager would help with run production also.

If Adolis isn't in the field, he wont be in the lineup.

I really just tremble at the thought of Grossman having to play defense in that outfield. ESPECIALLY with Arizona having a track team on the bases.

I agree. The guys in front of Seager need to be kings at getting on base, however possible. Carter and his ability to generate walks is just that.

Maybe you can put Jank in there instead.. but he has to be able to draw walks at a minimum. You're trading a lack of defense for a lack of offense. (I know Grossman isn't known for offense, but I'd rather have his bat than Jank's)

I would go ahead and pencil in Gray in for Game 7 start.
And consider having him come in Game 5 or Game 6 if we have a lead and the starter struggles early, imo.

Some info... FWIW

Plotting the DBacks BP game today.

Mantiply: 8G, 1GS, 6.1 IP, 4.26 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 5 SO, 3 BB <- Post-season numbers

G4 against Phillies went:
Mantiply (32, LHP): 1.0, 1 H, 0ER, 1K, 0BB
Frias (25, RHP): 1.1, 0 H, 0ER, 2K, 0 BB
Nelson (27, LHP): 0.2, 1 H, 1ER, 1K, 0BB, 1HR
Castro (28, RHP): 1.2, 1 H, 1ER, 1K, 0BB
Saalfrank (26, LHP): 0.1, 1 H, 1ER, 2R, 0K, 3BB
Thompson (31, RHP): 2.0, 2 H, 1ER, 3K, 2BB
Ginkel (29, RHP): 1.0, 1H, 0SO, 0BB
Sewald (33, RHP): 1.0, 1H, 3SO, 0BB

G3 WS (last night) against Texas went:
Frias (25, RHP): 1.2, 20PC - Faced: Semien, Seager, Garcia, Carter, Garver, Heim
Nelson (27, LHP): 12PC - Faced: Lowe, Jung, Taveras
Castro (28, RHP): 11PC - Faced: Carter, Garver, Heim
Saalfrank (26, LHP): 4PC - Faced: Lowe

Total 2023 WS:
Manply: 1G, 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 SO, 0 BB
Frias : 2G, 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 SO, 2 BB
Nelson: 2G, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 SO, 2 BB
Castro: 2G, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 SO, 0 BB
Saalfr: 2G, 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 SO, 0 BB
Thomps: 1G, 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 SO, 1 BB
Ginkle: 1G, 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 SO, 1 BB
Sewald: 1G, 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 SO, 2 BB

With Mantiply (LHP) getting the GS, going with your traditional lineup of:
Semien (L)
Seager (R)
Carter (L)

Would benefit them. This could be a good excuse to move a RH up ahead of Semien bumping everyone down. If you go 3up3down, you have Carter (L) in the 2nd and they may keep Mantiply in... likely won't go Frias (RH)

Will Bochy get cute with the lineup or will he stick to what got us here?!

Just did:

This card seems to be picking and choosing on what is impactful, lol. This is why you always have to look at the data, vs blindly trusting any metrics you see put out. You can make data say whatever you want it to say, and most people will just blindly accept it.
Specifically the 9th inning "ball 4 is called a strike" conveniently ignoring the clear strike that was called a ball. Those are pretty evenly bad, and if anything he would potentially not even have been in a position to draw a walk if that first call is correct.

I do think, overall, he called it pretty even. He was also better earlier in the game, and seemed to falter a bit as the pressure mounted.

I won't happen, but I would consider letting Garver catch, Grossman DH and Jankowski in the outfield.

I thought the "feel" of the game was that he was pretty consistent on both sides. What he was calling for one he was calling for the other.

The problem is he was missing some where the ball was completely off the plate or completely over the plate. Not a real hard miss or not. Not like it was grazing and you are splitting hairs.

There was one on the corner he didn't call where you literally could see the entire ball inside the plate and saw the outside of the plate as the ball crossed over. And on the other hand where the ball was clearly off the plate and you could see the dirt between the ball and the plate from the overhead shot. It was crazy and just made it seem like it was bad all night.

Really need to stack guys that crush lefties in front of and behind Seager and Carter. Guarantee Luvollo will bring in a lefty every time for Seager/ Carter, so I'd be more inclined to separate them some. Below is what I'd roll out tonight with ops vs lefties.

Semien .800
Seager .881
Grossman .952
Carter .091
Garver .938
Heim .856
Jung .995
Lowe .642
Taveras .638

I don't think there's any way you can have Garver behind the plate against a team that runs like AZ. I also don't think you can have Grossman running around that cavernous outfield. If Garcia is out, I go Jankoswki. A .260 outfielder, a speed demon, strong arm, and the best ball-hawking outfielder you have. You lose Grossman's power, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
gibby03

Doesn't Jankowski have a low chase rate? I like that over power from Grossman. Speed in the field with a better chance to get on base and cause pressure for Arizona. We need guys on base, not sluggers right now.

We seem to be too feast or famine right now.
gigem1223
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The problem with starting Jankowski is you throw another lefty in the line up that can't hit lefties. You have to start Grossman to protect your studs against lefties imo. Jankowski is the perfect sub in later innings.

I've just fully (mostly) accepted nothing I do as a fan impacts the game. Any superstition I come up with always ends up being proven wrong (for better or worse). Now having said that, I'm not entirely sure what Id do in your situation...but the whole point of watching the regular season is to get to enjoy the playoffs. Its been a decade since we were in World Series and there is no guarantee we come back. Watch the games

If you were to go Jank over Grossman.. I wouldn't be opposed to having Jank down at the bottom of the order and bring Leody up to that 5 spot. Having him and Carter on the basepath ahead of Semi and Seags is pretty appealing.

I just don't want this game to get away from us because Grossman misplays a line drive and they end up scoring three with their third base coach playing windmill. On the Garver catching front, I don't love that either, but we're in-between a rock and a hard place. We probably don't have a great solution at the moment.

That being said, I think Grossman would give you a better at-bat than Heim right now.

I wouldn't call Grossman a slugger. His plate discipline is elite, Grossman's chase rate is one of the best in the league.

Stacking him and Carter could bode well against bullpen arms.

I dont think anything official yet. More just preparing for the worst. Boch seemed kind of optimistic last night, now whether that's true optimism or coach speak remains to be seen.

Absolutely. You know if he's able, they'll give him everything possible to help with the pain and let him play.

Unfortunately I don't think we see Garcia again this season. Anyone who has ever pulled or strained the same muscle he did, can vouch that there's not much you can do until it heals, most certainly not play pro sports.

Yea I don't think there's any way Adolis plays another game this season. Even if he did he wouldn't be the same player and would likely be a liability. He just swings way too hard to not be affected in some way by that injury.

We don't even know what the actual injury is yet, no? Aren't we all speculating?

I haven't seen anyone confirm what the injury is…several have assumed oblique, but I have yet to see any confirmation on that…

If we don't have Adolis the rest of the series then we really need this one tonight to go up 3-1. That loss evens this matchup so much more.
