His Home/Road splits are pretty terrible. He is 5.14, IIRC, on the road this year.

I'd expect the crowd and adrenaline will have Javier send Semien two fastballs that go about shoulder high, before he settles down.

Both Seager and Semien need to be patient out of the gate. Which means Semien will swing and foul the first pitch and it will be shoulder high and he will send it over the Rangers dugout.

Speaking of the first inning, Even Grant hinting that Carter might get moved up in the lineup again, which would of course get him up to bat in the first inning no matter what. We will have to wait until the lineups are posted this afternoon to find out:

Just feels like with Scherzer's 1st inning struggles if the first 10 pitches go well, he's going 5+ innings. If they don't, it's gonna be a long bullpen game with the offense playing from behind.

Well the difference between earlier this year and now, is we're well more equipped to stay competitive in a long BP game with guys like Heany, Dunning, Gray, and Perez. We can dip into them and not completely screw us up for the rest of the series if it doesn't go well.

Won't link it, but there's an ESPN article this morning about the Dallas-Houston rivalry, and it's one of the lamest pieces I've ever read on ESPN. It literally skims over why the cities of Dallas and Houston dislike each other, spending more time discussing how the cities were founded on the backbone of slavery, the Texas Rangers are racist, and how "long-suffering" Houston fans were despite their greater level of success during the 80s-00s. It never dives into why the fans dislike each other, the insecurity of Houston fans, the nonchalance of Dallas fans, or the inter-family rivalries that ensue. It's really weird and doesn't seem to be written by someone who has the pulse of rivalry.

Correct about SD
Does UCLA football now, I believe. His football is solid, but baseball was definitely his thing.

I will say I don't hate the Astros. Its more indifference than anything else. I get the feeling their fans need to tell everyone they are the most relevant baseball team and why they are "actually a dynasty". No doubt they've had some success reaching the ALCS many times in recent years. But out of all of that, they still only have 2 WS championships. Impressive yes, but it doesn't make a team a dynasty in baseball. I think the reason a lot of people dislike the astros is because their fans won't shut up about it.

It's sorta like, "How can you know if someone is vegan? They tell you about it in the first 30 seconds of every conversation."

I think the cheating scandal has more to do with it than anything else. That's mentioned exactly one time in the whole article, which is befuddling since that's how the nation views the Astros.

The whole article just feels weird. Even how it goes about interviewing Houston fans doesn't feel authentic.

The Radio said something to the effect that Scherzer went 70PC in his last session and that was likely the target the target they are hoping to reach.

I think Bochy likely gives him a little more leash than he'd give almost anyone else. I don't think anyone thought he'd make it back and he worked hard and was determined to help this team. I think if he can get through the 1st regardless of result, that he'll settle in.

Another point one of the Radio guys mentioned was that this might just be seen as a "knock the rust off" game for Max. You aren't going to throw the game away, but if you can get 70PC from him today, in a WS round, he now has something to build off. Since we have a fresh bullpen and plenty of long-relief guys, getting to 70PC may be as important as winning the game. Not that we can take for granted, but I'd certainly prefer where we are.

Same. My mother's side was from Houston, so I always pulled for Houston in the NL Central and cheered them on against the White Sox in the WS. When they came to the AL, it took a while for that to go away. It didn't help that the two teams only had a brief crossover where they were both good. The Rangers dominated for a while, their window closed, and the Astros became the dominant team. So, while there were brief moments where they competed (Houston blowing the division lead to Texas at the end of 2015 stands out), for the most part, there haven't been great division races between the two. Now, with the Rangers' window seemingly about to open, it'd be cool to get 4-5 years of head-to-head battles ala Cowboys-Redskins in the 70s.

Bochy said yesterday he hopes to get at least that from Scherzer, but we'll see. He could very easily come out and get walloped early. I'm sure they have a plan for it.

And my leash isn't long for Scherzer. You aren't playing the Diamondbacks. You mess around with Houston, you'll find yourself golfing next week.

We're also in a 3 game series, all-hands-on-deck scenario where we get a day off. If Eovaldi were needed for tomorrow's game, I'd expect him to be available for 15-20 PC/ 1.0 IP. ESPECIALLY, if we are ahead in game.

And if it goes all the way to a G7... we'll have a better handle on where Scherzer is, but if we get to a G7, it likely means a loss today.

I really like CJ and Raymond is just a play by play guy. I was in the camp of the people who thought Lewin was a little hokey. I don't mind a bland play by play as long as the analyst is insightful. TAG was nice, but his insight was outdated.


Lewin was hokey, but was excellent at transferring the emotion of the game through the screen, which is what you're looking for in sports like baseball and hockey (not so much football, which is why guys like Jackson, Summerall, and Michaels are legends and Gus Johnson is a running joke). His home run calls were great. I've mentioned Nadel's dourness here before, and I I've come to really like Matt Hicks. Jared Sandler is going to be great in the future when Nadel steps down. He's really good.
I always liked when the rangers would win by recording the last out and Lewin would always say BALL GAME.


Yes, Lewin had a great tagline for games won by Texas. And it was expecially great with a walkoff win. The great win over Oakland in 2004 late in the season when Delucci hit the walkoff two run double was pure greatness when Lewin made that call that day and finished with BALLGAME!!
I'm behind here, but all this talk about Lewin and I always remember him most for this call. I had just gotten home from school and turned it on hoping to catch the ending. I turned it on just in time for Delucci's AB. Absolute all-timer right here. It was a HUGE win for that 2004 team at the time to try to stay in the hunt for the division.



Now back to discussion about the current series and today's game.

I always wanted a WS with the Rangers and Astros. I liked them, even when the Dodgers were my NL team (still are). The 1985 WS was KC Royals vs St. Cards and ever since I had hoped for an All-Texas WS.

With them in the NL, it was easier to be dismissive of Astros fans. The Oilers were my AFC team. I was a Rams NFC fan until they moved to StL. Love-Hate relationship with the Cowboys, but I took great satisfaction when the Oilers melted in the AFC WC game against the Bills. Up 28-3 and they lost in OT.

Just seems like the team and Scherzer really needs to put up a zero in the top of the first. The rangers need it because the Astros dominated us so bad at home this year and Scherzer it could give him some confidence to make it thru 4 or 5 innings while putting up a decent outing.


Since 2018, the Astros are 16-9 on the road in the playoffs. Only time they lost 2 games on the road in a series was 2018 against Tampa Bay (weird) and the 2021 World Series at Atlanta.

We have a huge task in front of us. Maybe we can make it happen and not go back to Houston. But history suggests we will be playing at MMP again…

I remember their articles on genocide and concentration camps for Native Americans in Boston... and the absolute corruption and economic destruction caused by Wall St landing us in the Great Depression for a decade.

I really like CJ and Raymond is just a play by play guy. I was in the camp of the people who thought Lewin was a little hokey. I don't mind a bland play by play as long as the analyst is insightful. TAG was nice, but his insight was outdated.


Lewin was hokey, but was excellent at transferring the emotion of the game through the screen, which is what you're looking for in sports like baseball and hockey (not so much football, which is why guys like Jackson, Summerall, and Michaels are legends and Gus Johnson is a running joke). His home run calls were great. I've mentioned Nadel's dourness here before, and I I've come to really like Matt Hicks. Jared Sandler is going to be great in the future when Nadel steps down. He's really good.
I always liked when the rangers would win by recording the last out and Lewin would always say BALL GAME.


Yes, Lewin had a great tagline for games won by Texas. And it was expecially great with a walkoff win. The great win over Oakland in 2004 late in the season when Delucci hit the walkoff two run double was pure greatness when Lewin made that call that day and finished with BALLGAME!!
That's my 2nd favorite Josh Lewin call. It's on MLB.com somewhere. I'll try to find it.

I think the cheating scandal has more to do with it than anything else. That's mentioned exactly one time in the whole article, which is befuddling since that's how the nation views the Astros.

The whole article just feels weird. Even how it goes about interviewing Houston fans doesn't feel authentic.
(Not a Rangers fan) The cheating scandal is only half of it. They cheated, sure. In a laughable, stupid way too. Banging on a trash can? LOL

It was the pompous response of the players and especially the fans that made the rest of the nation hate them. Couple that with Manfred doing absolutely nothing (now saying he wishes he'd done more lmao) and you've got a nation and league hating a team. Which is funny cause they played up the whole, "We want to be villains!" bit but then cry when teams boo poor little Altuve.
