My goodness, the Oxy fans just can't help themselves but to come over and try to troll on this thread. One would think they'd have a little more self confidence after winning 1.5 world series titles.
What I can't understand is why they are obsessed with our little slice of texags Texas rangers heaven ( THEY ARE OBSESSED).

They enjoy preferential treatment from Texags mods who leave up their obnoxious threads on premium, they have a trash talk thread that they can bash us relentlessly on, and they have a HOUSTON ASTROS thread for any and all things Houston Astros.

What I just mentioned is way more than enough room or space to discuss both the Astros and crapping on any teams they don't like, but they keep accidentally posting on here and invading this thread. The whole thing is downright hilarious and weird.

Because they're insecure and seek validation. Up until a few years ago, their city's most crowning sports achievement was a toss up between the Oilers leaving town and the Houston Comets.

Right now they're the Braves of the 90s, which didn't go down as a dynasty with only one title. But those Braves teams are remembered and revered by fans of other teams. This Asstros run will be all but forgotten for anyone outside of TX in the next ten years.

I want to be able to cheer for both Texas teams so bad, I grew up in Dallas and San Antonio, and as a baseball loving kid, I loved to watch the Rangers and the Astros. The killer B's were awesome and easy to root for. In college I actually had a job running the Astros radio broadcasts and became even more of an Astros fan, making them my 1b right behind the Rangers. However, whatever happened to Astros fans by going through the tanking years now has made them absolutely insufferable to deal with.

Between the incessant lecturing they give on every subject, or the downplaying of their scandal they just never shut up about how awesome they are and how everyone should want to be them. Then you peek at their game day threads and it's an orgy of anger and vitriol for their manager, half their players, other posters that don't parrot the talking points of the thread bullies, and then comes the incessant near nudes they post. I'm as big of a fan of boobs as there is, but on a game thread where women and possibly teens/kids could be following, it's just one more obvious sign of their overall jackass and unwelcoming behavior.

They're nothing more than pond scum and don't deserve the attention. Ignore and move on.

I still remember network furor when the Diamondbacks "stunned" the Yankees in Game 7 in '01. The D's had Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. Schilling went 7, and Johnson closed the day after going 7. Mariano Rivera blew the game in the 9th.

You are the only one talking WS vs CS, blue collar vs white collar, or open roof vs closed roof.

I said a weekday day game won't be as loud as a night game and you decided that would be the time to educate our fanbase on what the playoffs are like.
As someone who has been to alot of the CS games and WS games in person, not on TV with amplified sound, I am saying that game time in the CS matters much less than the other elements, I shall go back to the Astros thread! Have fun and good luck!

Oh golly gee you've been to CS and WS games in person and not just watched on TV?

Shucks, tell us rubes what it's really like?

I love how the fanbase that literally set the modern day record for lack of attendance over a 4 year period now feels the need to explain what it's like in the playoffs to a fanbase that has had 22 home playoff games in the last 13 years including 6 WS games.

Have a historical tankjob and cheating scandal and suddenly you're experts.

Growing up, half my family was from Houston, and half were from Dallas. I used to root for both teams, since they were in different leagues and both teams hadn't experienced any major, sustained success. Felt the fan bases were very similar.

But I'll also add this caveat: the Houston Oilers fans I grew up with were VERY sensitive because of the Cowboys' success and reputation. I had a family member on the Houston side once tell me that the anger stemmed from the fact that Houston is the largest city in Texas but always takes a back seat to DFW in media and pop culture. There's also the natural "eww" reaction when it comes to what the nation thinks of as "Houston", for better or worse.

The above post is correct. At some point, Astros fans as a whole turned mean (I do know some very nice Astros fans), and the pall of the biggest cheating scandal in 100 years made them even meaner. Unfortunately for them, it's one that will take the franchise decades to recover from in the public eye. This past summer, KHOU reported a fan poll that found the Astros were third most disliked team in baseball, behind only the Yankees and Dodgers. Unlike those two teams, Houston doesn't have a massive nationwide fan base counter that.

What makes it worse for them is, that despite their amazing run, they can't seem to dominate the popularity in their own state. As the Houston Chronicle reported recently, the state is basically split 50-50. Houston, Beaumont, Corpus, and Brownsville have a Houston advantage, while DFW, Waco, West Texas, and the Panhandle favor the Rangers. San Antonio tilts slightly to Houston, and Austin tilts slightly to Texas. You can almost draw a straight line through the state. Again, that creates a huge amount of insecurity. I think it adds to it that Houston's success doesn't get much more than a shrug and "I hate those guys" attitude from Texas fans. That Texas fans don't wallow in misery about it (the way Texas or A&M fans often do when the other has the better team) feeds the beast.

Just win. Just win. That is all we need to do.

So that and the melt down will be epic. Then do it again next season and then the Astros fans will be become bearable as the band wagon fans will disappear.

The entire second half of the season we would look like world beaters for 7-8 games and then collapse for the next 5-6. Kinda nervous about us going cold, but maybe the moment/hype will stop that from happening.

Also worried about Bochy's insistence on using Chapman. He been shaky since we got him, and doesn't have a good track record in ALCS games against Houston...

My high from Tuesday has worn off and now I'm stressing lol

It looks like he is always chopping it up with Montgomery (on days Montgomery isn't pitching) and they are always having a good time when there is a camera shot of the dugout. No idea what their history is together but they seem to be best buds. I choose to believe that bodes well for Montgomery returning next year.

As long as we pay him deGrom money, I am sure Montgomery will be thrilled to come back next year ! deGrom is probably giving him investment tips and such

But yes, deGrom has been in the dugout, even on the road games (at least the past several weeks for sure).

Let's hope! Surely Ray Davis can go to DeGrom for a payday loan to help lock him down!

Dilly Dilly.

From 2000-2005, I went to about 40-50 Astros games during my time in College Station. Most of the group I went with was the Midland Lee boys who just loved baseball. We met tons of Astros fans, and then I started going with Aggie Astros fans to games. We always had a great time. Being from DFW, I was welcomed and encouraged to go and enjoyed every moment.

It's not the same now. How it was said above me is a pretty great way to say it.

Kind of random question but had an Astro fan mention some controversy around Hurricane Harvey and us refusing to switch home and home dates…a Google search confirms it but I don't remember any of it. Did JD give any other reason other than being concerned about season ticket holders??

Synopsis:

Astros had a weekday series that couldn't be played due to Harvey
They wanted to switch with our weekend series in Arlington (which would require a lot of cancelling and refunding of tickets)
We said no, but IIRC, we offered to let them play at the ballpark, as the home team, and to have the ticket sales go to hurricane relief.
They said no, so the games were played in an empty (even more so than usual) Tropicana Field.

Astros wanted to swap their series which was 3 days away with the series Texas had at home in late September.

Texas said they were happy to host and give 100% of the gate to Houston, but trying to tell a bunch of ticket holders who had tickets for a near sold out series late September "actually those games are now in a few days" wasn't logistically possible. And that's ignoring it's basically trading a home series the last week of the season in a potential pennant race, which also would have caused a 12-game road trip in the last 2 weeks of the season.

Ironically Reid and the franchise showed their true colors as rather than take 100% of the gate and a much shorter trip for a 3-game series in Arlington, they opted to play the game 1000+ miles East in Tampa Bay at a "neutral field".

So while finding it unfathomable that Texas wouldn't want to put themselves at a disadvantage in a pennant race, Houston opted to take the exact same approach and decline playing closer to home -- giving up well over $500K in gate revenue they would have received from the series in Texas that could have gone to Harvey victims.

And the went to the press and framed it as "Rangers don't care about hurricane victims"... Apparently neither did the Astros.
