Facing another righty tomorrow, which this team seems to hit much better against. Better not see Grossman's .200 avg vs righties in the lineup again. Garver is a vet and has an .843 ops vs righties this season. Put him in the 5 hole Boch!

Want:
Carter
Semien
Seager
Garcia
Garver
Heim
Lowe
Jung
Taveras

Probably:
Semien
Seager
Lowe
Garcia
Garver
Heim
Jung
Taveras
Carter

I never like seeing Jung paired with Taveras or Garcia anywhere in the lineup…. back to back K's are an inning wrecker…. I like them all but putting any of the 3 back to back kills an inning…. probably 2.

Huh? Taveras has the 4th lowest k% on the team.

K rate %

Semien - 14.6
Seager - 16.4
Lowe - 22.8
Garcia - 27.7
Garver - 23.8
Heim - 19.2
Jung - 29.3
Taveras - 21.1
Carter - 32

Damn, I knew Jung was K prone, but I did t realize it was THAT high. I don't doubt he'll make improvements next season.

We can hope. He started to show signs of increased swing and miss during his AAA season and in his first MLB stint. The more he goes on swinging at high cheese and three straight breaking balls out of the zone, the more I think this is who he is. I'm going to continue to hope though.

That's interesting, I guess I hadn't looked at his numbers like that. But I just go and think of Adolis, if someone as old as him can improve his command of the strike zone like he has, surely someone with the potential (I know that's a no-no word) of Jung can improve too.

I heard this earlier on the radio driving into work and had to look it up. The attendance yesterday in Tampa was the lowest for a MLB playoff game since 1919. I realize it was a 2 PM eastern start time on a Tuesday but my goodness

I wouldn't be upset about it as a Rangers fan. Their lack of a home field advantage helps us out.

Yep. As soon as I saw those game times paired with Tampa, I knew it would be bad. Now, Baltimore will be a different story should we make it.

And yet, they are getting a brand new stadium. There are at least five other cities that franchise should have been moved to years ago.

Ticket master has tickets located a few rows behind home plate listed at around $100. Incredible.

And their new stadium will be in the same hard to get to location.

The stadium is on a peninsula that requires more fans to drive over a bridge to get to. It excludes so many people. It is 20 mins right now to get across one of the 3 main bridges to the stadium. Now, if you live East of any of that, add time. Add traffic.

You know what a pain it is getting out of GLP/GLF... it wouldn't surprise me if you're looking at most of the population being 40+Mins away from the stadium.

Add to it, that they have had so many injuries and the issue with the SS... that team and fans have to be worn down. And playoff fatigue.

But it's Florida…I'm sure they're all Yankees and Mets fans but there's gotta be enough retirees willing to watch afternoon playoff baseball in the area on the cheap

It's Tampa.

The opponent is not a "name" team.

It's the middle of the day on a weekday.

But more significant to the "historical" attendance numbers... Before 1995 there was no wildcard series. You played two series and then you were in the World Series. Now for wildcard teams it's four series.

Yes, it's "playoff baseball", but these are the equivalent of "play-in" series.

The following wild card teams have won the World Series: the Florida Marlins, in 1997 and 2003; the Anaheim Angels, in 2002; the Boston Red Sox, in 2004; the St. Louis Cardinals, in 2011 (****); the San Francisco Giants, in 2014; and the Washington Nationals, in 2019.

Bochy was the manager in SF when they won in 2014 and Scherzer was a key part of the 2019 Nats.

The Yankees actually have a Single A level team there in Tampa. It's pretty close to where the Buccaneer's play, you can see the Buc's stadium (Raymond James) across the way.

The last time we were down in that area (it's been a while), the Rays were out of town so we caught a minor league game. Carlos Beltran was actually playing on a rehab assignment.

Grossman in the 3 hole again. Wtf?!

Same line up today. One of our most productive hitters on the frickin bench for a guy that hit .200 against righties.

I think Boch explained it in the radio to where if they need to pinch run or something for Heim.. or to pinch hit for someone, I don't remember exactly how he explained it but there seemed to be a method to his madness.. for now.
gigem1223
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If there is some odd method to it or Garver is hurt, that still doesn't excuse putting one of your worst hitters against RH pitching in the 3 spot.

Cool bit from SVP last night on how much the pitch clock changed baseball this year. I really enjoyed the pace of the game yesterday, no more waiting 2-minutes between pitches late in playoff games

It's old school manager "but what if this thing that never ever happens, happens?"

Same reason we're carrying 3 catches on the roster.

Batting a 0.200 hitter for 2 at-bats because you might need to pinch run for Heim late in the game (meaning Garver might not even an at-bat) is deliciously Bochy.

He's a 0.500ish manager that is going to keep doing the things he did 30 years ago. He's not going to prevent a roster from producing as they should, but he also isn't going to generate an extra win or two.

I was looking at his splits, because I had thought he'd been pretty productive, but he is much more productive vs Lefties. .309 vs .206. But his splits when batting 3rd his average (albeit in pretty limited ABs) is .267 with an OPS of 1.209, which is about 450 points of his next highest OPS number, batting 8th with an .857 OPS.

Maybe he's protecting him in the lineup by putting him in the middle of our best hitters. But even if he does go 0fer I doubt Boch will change it.
gigem1223
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The problem with that, is in the regular season, Grossman's time in the 3 spot this season was always against lefties. Putting Grossman there gives our best hitter zero protection. If I'm Tampa, I'm walking Seager in any high leverage spot and taking my chances with Grossman.

Yeah, before looking it up I was thinking he was better against the righties, but I realized I was backwards.

Are you saying that we're not in the MLB playoffs? How is this different than wild card weekend in the NFL?

We're in the playoffs.

But for almost 30 years it was ALDS, ALCS, WS.

Now it's WC, ALDS, ALCS, WS.

I get it, it's good for the game and I'm fine with it -- more teams still playing for something in September which MLB desperately needed. But the consequence of that is it's a diluted playoffs.

Agreed but maybe because there are three wild card teams now in lieu of two. I remember when this changed and took me forever to get used to.

This was a great segment from SVP, but his comment at the very end about the runner at 2nd in extras had me dying laughing. "That's just dumb." Lol
