Agree with having Monty at 1 currently but I doubt Bochy will.

Eovaldi and Monty are probably interchangeable based on what lineup they will face too. If someone has a lefty heavy lineup I would bet Monty would get the nod in order to try and get ahead in a series.

I think that's what we will have to roll with. Like you said earlier, it sure would be nice to see Gray get it together tonight.

I think you lead with Monty against Minnesota, Eovaldi is lead against the rest.

Minnesota:
Monty (L)
Eovaldi
Perez/Heaney (L)
Dunning/Gray

The rest:
Eovaldi
Monty
Dunning
Gray

The problem becomes the bullpen.
LH RP:
Long: Bradford, Perez, Heaney
Mid: Burke, Latz (won't make roster)
End: Chapman, Smith

RH RP:
Mid: Stratton, Sborz (if healthy), Hernandez (won't make roster)
End: Leclerc

We really only have 2... maybe 3 RH RPs. We have 6 LH RPs.

Now, I expect some RH SP be be available out of the pen, but here is where we are.

Does Will Smith even make the postseason roster?

Edit: I guess a better question is, should he?

Right now, it'd be hard to justify he and Heaney on the 1st Rd playoff roster, but it depends on who is healthy. I think we'd have 13 Ps.

Here is how I see it

4 SP
SP RH: Eovaldi, Dunning, Gray
SP LH: Monty

6 LH RP:
Long: Bradford, Perez, Heaney
Mid: Burke
End: Chapman, Smith

3 RH RP:
Mid: Stratton, Sborz (if healthy)?
End: Leclerc

Leaves out: Latz, Hernandez, Scherzer

Has there been any update on Scherz? I know they were highly doubtful he'd be available, but just knowing how he is, I'd think if he can pitch, they would be hard pressed to keep him from taking the field.

Obviously if we sweep LAA, we are in the playoffs.

If we take only 1 of 3 @ LAA, that puts us at 88-70.

If Houston sweeps Seattle, we are in.

If Seattle sweeps Houston:
Seattle - 87-71
Houston - 85-74
Houston needs to sweep @ ARI and hope Seattle sweeps us.

If Houston takes 2 of 3 @ SEA:
Houston - 87-72
Seattle - 85-73
Seattle would need to sweep us to make the playoffs.

If Seattle takes 2 of 3:
Houston - 86-73
Seattle - 86-72
Seattle would need to sweep us to make the playoffs.

Unless Smith can put together a couple of decent outing's during the last week of the season, how do we keep him on the roster for the playoffs? We are heavy on LH relievers anyway, give me Hernandez at this point.

Scenarios in which Will Smith should be anywhere near the pitching mound between now and November 5thish:

1) celebrating the Rangers clinching Division title
2) celebrating ALDS win
3) celebrating ALCS win
4) celebrating WS win
5) 10+ run lead in any game. If he gives up a walk or hit, he is pulled as soon as allowed by rule
6) 6+ run deficit in any game, in which case, I'll take my chances with Hedges.

My dream scenario for the playoff run: Texas clinches a playoff spot, but Houston needs us to beat Seattle in Game 162 to qualify for the wild card. Bochy gives them the double-bird and starts Hedges and lets him go the distance. Seattle wins 39-2. Manfred smiles but sends a strongly-worded email.
This is starting to line up nicely.

I'm pretty sure he's saying it's 5 games for us over both teams.

Houston has 6 games remaining. They have a day off on Thurs.

Seattle and Texas both have 7 games remaining. We play 4 against each other.

Nope.

Tomorrow.

Texas is 87-68 with 7 remaining
Seattle is 84-71 with 7 remaining

Texas W (88-68) and Seattle L (84-72) puts us up 4 Games with both having 6 games remaining, 4 against each other.

If we Win today and tomorrow - we'll have 89 Ws. Seattle loses today and tomorrow remaining at 84 Ws with both having 5 left.

We have the tie breaker, so the best Seattle could do is W the remaining 5 (we'd lose the remaining 5) and we'd be at 89-73. Seattle would be 89-73.

We'd clinch a WC at worst.

It's a good question that Dallas answered. The situation is fun because all 3 are vying for the title, with games against each other, and two of the teams have one additional game than the 3rd. I will update the Magic Number after each day.

You will see it change tonight and make more sense. An example...

If...

Rangers win
Seattle wins

MN against Seattle = 4
MN against HOU = 3

R wins
H wins

MN against S = 3
MN against H = 4

R loss

MN against S or H wins = 5
MN against S or H loss = 4

You guys are *******izing the phrase.

It's one number. If multiple teams are involved it's not really a magic number yet and the number could go up, it's not a magic number.

Yeah, we actually have two magic numbers - one against each team. And it will change each night.

But since we have the tiebreaker over Seattle, our magic number with them is only 4.

Well, it can't be one number because there are three teams involved. If we and Seattle win, it's a push between us but one comes off towards the Oxys.

Magic number - a single number that determines how many wins or losses (from certain teams) required to win a division or clench a playoff spot.

What y'all are calling our "magic number" with the Mariners or Astros is actually their elimination number. If our "magic number" for the division with the Astros goes to 0, what magical thing happens? Jack *****

Thank you. A lot of these kids weren't around the last time we were trying to clinch something.

Let us old fogies tell you guys how it was done. Was actually talking with my uncle this weekend about the '96 ALDS he took me to in which he got kicked out for ragging on Jeff Nelson in the bullpen.

No Carter today. I think he's on fire. He has sparked this team. It transcends R v L matchups. Put him in coach.

Our number for the Mariners is 5 and our number for the Astros is 5 so our magic number is 5. If we win tonight and so do the Mariners it would be 4. And the Astors number would drop to 3 but our magic number would still be 4.
