Anyone see that interview with deGrom. He was totally tearing up, choking up, in tears. Talked about how special the team is, how sorry he is he can't help the guys. He also recognized the others who have stepped up so much. Can tell deGrom loves this team and knows how special it is.

Yep dude is down. They said he's done this before…..he's already had Tommy John?

In 2010, I think I read.
You could hear the "crap I have to go through that rehab again" in his voice, along with a lot of other emotions. It's got to feel completely different to go back down a difficult road you've already slogged through once.
I just hope the $40M he will get this season is enough to lift his spirits.

He will likely be too long in the tooth by then to want to exercise it, but I do like how they wrote in the extra year team option in the event of an injury like this. If it goes well (which most do), I actually think this surgery is actually a good thing for the remaining years because I think it will help him. Sucks now, but I think they end up with a healthier pitcher over the next few years

Many of you are suffering from recency bias. That is - you expect 2023 Astros to be same as 2022.

Truth is - they're older and/or gone. Christian Javier was their #5 starter last year - now he's their #2. Several everyday players are now on the backside of their careers - Maldonado, Altuve, Abreu. Almost all the rest of their everyday players are in their age 30 year this season or next.

Unlike wine, ball players don't get better with age. We watched this same thing happen from 2012-2016 here.

True. Eovaldi has had two Tommy John surgeries and look at what he's doing. Let's hope deGrom has the same success.

For DeGrom, if they just have to repair it and not re-construct he can be back much quicker.

I think It also really depends on if he's going to have the brace surgery or a full reconstruction. A full reconstruction can take up to a year and a half to recover from, but if it's the brace you might be able to cut that timeline in half, which is a huge deal.

Eovaldi had his second surgery at 26, not 34 going on 35.

Zeke slashing .322/.374/.531. That's near Wander Franco numbers. 31 plate appearances from qualifying but would be 2nd in AL in batting average, 5th in Slg, and 4th on OPS with .905.

Kid is special and now he's starting to take walks when pitchers are giving him nothing but garbage.
He is averaging 3.6 PA/G, so as long as he remains in the lineup, he'll close the 31PAs needed in about 2 weeks.

Currently:
1. Bichette (Tor): .332
2. Yoshida (Bos): .319

7. Semien (Tex): .304
11. Heim (Tex): .293
12. Jung (Tex): .292

Non Qualified Rangers (186 PA required):
Seager: .336 (131 in 29 G) Would be #1
Duran: .322 (155 in 43 G) Would be #2
Taveras: .297 (181 in 46 G) Would be #9

It is a LONG season, but to think we could have 6 of the Top 15 BAs is crazy thought. Reminds me of the days of Julio Franco. In 1991, I remember sitting at the table in College Station listening to the radio as Franco, Palmeiro, and Sierra were all in the hunt for the batting title.

I heard on one of the shows last night it sounds like it is not going to be a full re-construct.

That could change when the surgery happens next week.

Read a couple of articles on the repair and it sounds if they take the very cautious approach he might be back in mid to late June next season.

With how we are playing right now the degrom news isn't terrible. We will miss him in a playoff series. Yeah he's getting old but you see guys like jv pitching great at 55 years old. It's better for him to get the surgery out the way so we are not playing the game of him out for a month after every couple of starts.

Unfortunately at deGrom's age with his history, we'll be lucky to get a #4/#5 caliber type pitcher for a few years out of him.

Risk was known though, just sucks we couldn't get lucky.

Wonder if we'll consider bolstering our rotation or just go for a reliever or two? If anyone goes down we are seeing a steady diet of Bradford. He seemed to pitch better last outing.

I think it all depends on who it is and how much it is going to cost (obviously), but even more so for the Rangers because we do have a few internal options. I you could get a guy with some upside and looking to get out of from a bad team or division, I would highly consider it. In other words, if you could get a number three-ish type of guy you could throw in a playoff series, then absolutely. But if you are just going after a backend of the rotation/old guy, then I would think twice because I think we could handle that from within. I am looking at guys like Giolito, Flaherty, Eduardo Rodriquez, Jordan Montgomery, Alex Cobb, or maybe even someone like Mitch Keller or Brady Singer. It also matters where some of these teams are in a month. The White Sox look to be figuring it out, and the Cardinals are going to push like hell until they are out.

Another combo that Bacsik/ Holland brought up today was to keep an eye on Bieber/ Clase in Cleveland. Bieber has 2 years left on his contract, which fits our window with deGrom and Clase has 4 years left on his contract.

Bieber scares the absolute crap out of me. His advanced numbers have fallen off a cliff since the ban of spider-tack and stick stuff.
gigem1223

Still, he'd be a great MORP with TORP potential. 1.4 WAR, 3.57 ERA, 1.27 WHIP. Also may do him some good to get out of Cleveland and on a competing team with good coaching. He's only 28. Would be a solid option, especially paired with Clase.

I think if they had a plan put in place before trading for him to get his RPMs and velocity back up a tick, then I could be convinced, but that is a big if. I like the thought though of trying to get a higher caliber pitcher, because we need to stay competitive and ahead.
Grapesoda2525

The thought of trading for clase sucks. Considering we traded him away for much less than we'd have to pay to get him this time.

I don't think there is any chance of those 2.

Bieber is an Arb3 next year. He'll be reasonably priced.
Clase actually has 3 + 2 Options. $2.9M, $4.9M, $6.4M, then 2 $10M options.

Almost everyone would be interest in both of those players and the cost will be higher, IMO, because there will be so many people sniffing around.

I just don't see the need to break the bank for another SP yet. And I'd be happy going into the playoffs with Eovaldi, Heaney and Gray.

I kind of agree. I mean in 2011 I think our playoff rotation was Lewis, Wilson, Harrison , Holland. Not exactly well known names but they got it done.

I've said before my co-workers nephew is Nathan Eovaldi. Just talked to her and she raves about his wife being the nicest person ever…consistently cooks meals and bakes treats for the team. Very true down to earth people that you would never know are in the position they are in. When he's in Friendswood for the offseason him and his soon go kayak fishing down in the bay. As good of a player he is, even better person / father / husband.
DallasAg 94

We have 4 legit SPs in Eovaldi (#5 ERA), Gray (#6), Perez (#23), and Heaney. Heaney is 2IP from Qualifying and would be #24. He pitches Friday, and would need to go a total of 4.0 IP.

Dunning is 6.1 IP from Qualifying and he would be #7.

So, the #5, 6, and 7 SPs based on ERA are our Top3.

Dunning is the key. I wonder if we could use an Opener and bring him in as a long-reliver/SP.

Open with Burke or Ragans (a Lefty) and let them go at least 1.0 IP and then bring in Dunning in the 2nd. Maybe even 3rd if the Opener can go 2.0 IP. Dunning comes in at the bottom of the order and you change from a Lefty to a Righty once you get back to the top. It is something Tampa does and it can be effective.

That would be more pressure on getting a LH RP, but would be much cheaper, IMO.

Not meaning to sound like I'm selling Dunning or Perez short. Just picking the guys who look most playoff ready to me.

Good to hear. If he can keep playing at anywhere near his current level, maybe he will be content to finish out his career here.

You'd think so! With him being a BIG family guy and the fact that he would never play for Houston, it does make sense that that would be the case since it's pretty close to home. Dude is also building a castle in Friendswood currently

The way I look at it is if it's sustainable. When I see Eovaldi and Gray pitch I think yes, both of those guys have the stuff to sustain this level of pitching. Perez and Heaney can be hit and miss, especially when you look at their total careers, but I feel okay about throwing them out there in a playoff game and hoping to get a solid outing. Dunning can kinda be lumped into the category with Perez and Heaney to an extent, but I think Perez and Heaney have better starting caliber stuff than Dunning, which is why I don't think what Dunning is doing is sustainable over a season and going into the playoffs as a full time starter.

How good has the Rangers offense been? Offensive ranking for each position out of all 30 MLB teams (using wRC+):

C: 4th
1B: 11th
2B: 2nd
3B: 2nd
SS: 3rd
LF: 19th
CF: 7th
RF: 3rd
DH: 22nd

So basically the only positions we are below average are DH and LF - that should get helped with Garver and Duran being back.

So now you really have me curious.... why would he never play for Houston? Something happen in prior years?

They got it done through the ALCS. When Game 7 rolled around the Cardinals were able to lean on their ace for the 3rd time (thanks to a phantom rainout). Having that ace instead of a "guy who has pitched really well this season" was the difference in a title (among other things).

Heck, even the ALCS that year wasn't exactly easy sledding. We won the series in 6, but won two extra inning games to do it.

Point is, having a guy like Lee, Degrom, Carpenter... That you can hand the ball to and know if you can give them 3 runs you'll win the game is a key piece to World Series winners.

Truth be told he really does not like Alex Bregman one bit (heated trash talking) as well as the stealing deal
