Maldy catching JV makes sense to me.
JV wasn't here in ST and has probably never thrown to Yanier. He has zero familiarity with Yanier as a player or even as a teammate.
I can also understand the hesitation to try Yanier. It's probably pretty intimidating for a rookie to catch a HOF who he has no clue how he pitches, what he likes, his mechanics, etc. That's a lot to ask of a young player still learning the position.
It isn't hard to grasp why JV only throws to Maldy.

He had never pitched to McCann before August 2017 and that seemed to work out okay
If JV, Maldy, and Diaz haven't already been talking a lot and preparing for that potential possibility in the post season, then somebody on the Astros is slacking on the job. Better for them to figure it out together during one of JV's remaining regular season starts than have to figure it out during a playoff game.Ag_07 said:

I'm all for Brantley playing first when he's healthy! Don't give me any BS that not everybody can play first either.
Again McCann is a vet with 10+ years experience catching all kinds of pitchers. Yanier is a rookie learning on the fly.
Plus JV has never pitched to anyone on that team so no matter what he was pitching to someone he had never worked with.
