Wonder what they'll cover for JV

Covered all but $22m for the contract that runs out either end of this year or next year if he picks up his option in exchange for their #2 prospect (in the top 100 protect list). JV has 2 1/2 years left, so they will want big prospect capital in return to cover money. I don't know that we have what it takes

But it also gets more money off their books. They might take a box of balls.

So Texas gets $22.5MM. That covers Max for the rest of the season and leaves about $8M extra. If he sticks around next year Texas will add $33MM in salary. Otherwise Texas pockets the extra $8MM.

So the Rangers get Max and get his salary covered for a minor leaguer?

Something doesn't sound right.

Max is declining and this minor leaguer is very good.

If he confirms his player option for next year are they able to use all $22 million towards next year and not this year? Big luxury tax implications for next year

I can almost guarantee you in 3 years the rangers are gonna have max regrets when Acuña is in the major leagues and looking like his brother

Edit: meant to type mad regrets but I'll leave it there because that works too

Would you send Gilbert to the Mets for JV if they covered all his salary this year and 1/3 of it next year?

It feels like that's what the Rangers just did.

...but they'll still have 2 super expensive, aging middle infielders to keep them warm

Not a chance.

There is a not zero chance Max opts out.

Nope

Especially not for what essentially could end up a rental for an old pitcher with an 4+ ERA and recent history of late season injuries (re Max)

significant portion is probably in the neighborhood of $18 MM

to get the cost for JV next year down to $25 MM

FWIW...I'd have been much more concerned if they'd have landed JV or Snell.

Let us not forget Diaz has Hunter with a shutout right now. Dusty is a complete ****ing idiot for still playing Maldy. He deserves one game a week just to give Diaz a break.

I normally hate piling on coaches but gd if it ain't obvious who the better catcher is.

So basically Scherzer gets to walk at the end of the season, which he will

I dunno...... I don't see him getting 43 million from anyone unless he has a randy Johnson 98 run
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

How do these things apply to the luxury tax though.

I know when you backload a guys contract that doesn't apply it's only an average of their total vs years…how does someone else paying effect those totals

Since most of the draft penalization is gone from the luxury tax violations, I would hope Crane takes the full amount for the rest of this year. Enters the tax just once. Then have the Mets help out for 24 and potentially 25. That's goes into when we'll have to pay for Altuve/Bregman.

And instead of the 1 mega prospect, build a package around two to three tier 2 prospects.

No, but maybe someone is willing to give him 3 years at 30 M per.

90 M might be > 43 M + future earnings at 40.

Based on how they have described the money coming to the rangers, I would think he's already agreed to opt in.
