We had a historically good pitching staff last year and has the #1 ERA thru the first few months of the season. I don't think losing Strom has any major impact on what is going on now.

So the injury talley is:

Framber
Garcia
Urquidy
Lance

Altuve
Yordan
Brantley
Possibly Abreu and Peña.

That's spectacular.

Imo Javier is also injured until proven otherwise

And for earlier season injured Chas missed most of a month with his back and still has to be sat; according to Dusty

They are beginning to really struggle because they are having to cover so many innings.

Last season, between JV, Framber, and LMJ, those guys consistently went 6 innings or more with CJ contributing to that stat toward the end of the year.

This year JV is gone, LMJ out, and CJ has something clearly wrong. Hunter started off strong, but has hit some rookie snags.

The Astros currently have one guy that can reliably get them 6 innings this year.

SP that can do deep wins a lot of games. 'Stros don't have that right now.

The complaints should be directed towards the bullpen.

Our best bullpen guys last season are not pitching well.

Despite injuries, starting pitching has been serviceable, it's the bullpen that's bad
4th best Bullpen ERA in all of MLB. Hope that helps.

Urquidy was pretty nails in the dog days of summer too

Pressly had to face the exact same three batters he did last night to start the inning. Although he's a legit closer, those are three damn good hitters.

Add a bullpen arm or two and a starter. Get Yordan and Altuve back. Maybe another bat. This team will look different in a hurry. Let's all just take a breath.

I'm honestly struggling to see how the Astros accomplish this with any significance without thinning out the current MLB roster.

At this point, I'm convinced the Astros need a low end 2 / high end 3 SP because I'm pretty damn concerned about CJ and HB.

The roster will look markedly better, yes. The real problem though is that Dusty Baker will still be managing them

So much drama.

The real problem is the Astros only have one starter that can consistently go 6!

It hasn't helped since June 1st. Maton has been great. Despite Pressly's recent streak of 12 hitless innings, he's been bad. Neris has underperformed consistently the last 6 weeks (tonight being the exception). Stanek is a disaster. Abreu was dominant the second half of last season, he's meh this year.

Hope that helps

Yep, good coaching typically leaves a mark that sticks around for a year or two after the coach leaves. We're seeing the impact now

Lol what in the world?

Pressly had a bad stretch of like 4-5 games several weeks ago but has otherwise been very good this season

Neris has underperformed the last 6 weeks? Since April 18th (36 outings) he has given up a total of 4(!) runs

Abreu may not be dominant, but he's been very solid for the most part and still sports a sub-3 ERA. That's excellent

Stanek - I'll give it to you that he's been subpar,

The team had been a MASH unit, but we all need to remember, with all that --- we are right there, in the thick of it.

Tonight's loss sucked ass. Dusty needs to ride off into the sunset, but we are stuck with him. This team is frustrating AF, but we still have 2 1/2 months left plus the trade deadline.

I think even with all the injuries, we get to 95 wins.

Great recap - that's so true. Up and down.
One thing to note - of our 16 losses since Yordan has been out, 6 have been by 1 run.

The thing I don't understand is, how do you prepare for a future (next year) without Maldy without having a catcher who can step in for 100-115 games? Sounds like they are just pushing that step back into the future. Why can't he start to learn the full staff now? (in-game, I mean)

If the bullpen is already exhausted and it's mid July… that's a major concern. Even if you get a couple of pieces that doesn't bode well.

That's why when it was 9-3 going into the 7th my thought was this is the perfect time for Montero to go out there. Especially since he's been a little better recently.
Then you go Montero 7, Stanek 8 (at the start of the inning rather than getting him up in a hurry with men on) and then whoever you want in the 9th with hopefully still a nice lead.
MaxPower

Need? Yeah certainly but I don't see where the capital is coming from. The only realistic 2/3 target we could possibly get is JV and that's because of how much money he is owed. This may just be a ride it out and see what happens season then let Dana regroup with a full offseason.

I get the usual complaints about Maldy, and the PB was inexcusable, but he was 2 for 5 tonight with a run and 2 RBIs to retake the lead. Stanek came in with bases empty needing 2 outs to get out of the inning, and he couldn't do it, letting 3 on. Abreu gives up a 3-run HR in 2 pitches before getting an out. Pressly gave up 4 straight hits including a HR in the 9th, losing a 3 run lead. The complaints should be directed towards the bullpen.

We can ***** about Dusty also, but what other weapons do we have in the bullpen? Our best bullpen guys last season are not pitching well.

Face it, we all knew when Brent Strom left after the 2021 season that our pitching might take a step back. It has, it's starting to show, and it's been a major problem this season. Despite injuries, starting pitching has been serviceable, it's the bullpen that's bad

Bullpen has been great outside Montero. The problem is starting pitching isn't going deep into games like last year forcing us to us the bullpen more. They're cooked and we still have a long way to go.

Big game today not just in terms of the smaller scale of winning the road series but Javier's performance could have a major impact on our season as a whole. How and who we move forward with..

It would be nice to have a manager that would occasionally get in an umpire's face. Pressly got screwed. Our batters constantly get screwed. Enough is enough

I don't care for Dusty but he had only 89 pitches going into that inning. We also got nothing from our SP the day before and who knows what you will get out of Javier tomorrow. Trying to get another inning out of him was the right call.

I just love this thread. SP's are weak they need to stretch out, remember how much Nolan use to throw, SP's should be able to go 7 or even 8

Ahhhh the manager sent our ace back out for the 7th inning with only 90 pitches!!! The Travesty!

it is hard to believe that Chas only has 182 at-bats on the season

just the 11th highest total on the team

in 182 AB's...he's produced 29 runs scored, 26 RBI, and 20 x-base hits...from the bottom half of the order

He's the CF we need to trade for, who is under control for another several years. It is absolutely REDACTED that he doesn't have 100 more AB's

Nahh, he just sucks. Hack that needs to be cut and we need to trade for a closer. And another extra closer. And 2 starting pitchers and maybe another stud bat. Also send Pena back to AAA and trade Blackhole Bregman for a bucket of bubble gum
