I think it would cost a bit more since we'll be bidding against other teams.

Cleveland is interested in outfielders with team control. I can see us offering one of our guys and maybe a couple prospects for Bieber or Civale.

This seems like it makes the most sense. Civale has 2.5 years left. He's not bad but nothing special. High spin guy. Elite cutter. Injury history is worrisome.

3 Astros in the top 20. It's wild that Altuve still sells so well after all these years. You'd figure the fans had his jersey by now. I'm sure the gold unis help boost our sales.

Agreed. And I keep thinking surely Bieber has something left in the tank and maybe a change of scenery and our coaches could help him out. But looking at his baseball savant page.... yikes.

I wonder if Montero is starting to get it figured out. On Sunday's radio broadcast they were talking about him getting more ground balls and better locations on the different pitch selections.

I think reliever is a huge need. The bullpen arms are already gassed and I believe they're all on pace to exceed their career mark for innings pitched. Not to mention the short offseason.

Obviously a bat is a huge need as well and a starting pitcher would be big. But a bullpen arm (or two) would do wonders for the second half outlook.

Neris has been amazing but he's going to tire out if he keeps pitching at this rate. Abreu has been overworked as well. Same with Maton. If Montero is figuring it out and can just be serviceable that would be really big.

I think they end up spending for at least one good bullpen arm and then getting a rental bat and SP for cheaper.

This is purely speculation.

A major reason our BP was so good last year is because our SP was good, too. They'd go deep in games and we'd only have to use 1, 2 or maybe 3 out of the BP. Seems like this year we use a minimum of 3 every game, usually more. One way to provide relief to the relievers is to bolster the SP. I agree that we need a BP arm, but I'd put a strong 2/3 SP as a priority.

I'd go starting pitcher. Just because we need somebody who will go 6 innings and really help get the bullpen/young starters some rest.
I'd go after Jack Flaherty or Lucas Giolito.

Secondly, I'd go lefty bat. Somebody like Bellinger or Joc Pederson.

If we go get a starter do they slide Beilak or Blanco to the pen?

Or do you send them to Sugarland and keep them stretched out as a starter for later use?

It'd be nice to address the rotation while also adding to the pen but with injuries so far it'd be hard to not keep them stretched out.

Will be the first year in a while Astros will not hit the preseason over in wins (not counting Covid)
Unless we go 48-23 in the second half to get to 98!!

Nobody counts the COVID year for anything, except for the Dodgers.

Haven't heard much about Gage. They were really high on him when they signed him. They saw some things they thought they could tinker and it seems like it hasn't worked out so far.. which is fine considering he costed next to nothing.

We aren't getting Pederson. SF is in the WC slot.

A quality reliever. Preferably lefty. They desperately need to reduce the load.

A quality arm, #2 level who then slots for us as a #3 after Framber and Javier and before Urquidy/Brown. You can keep JP as the 6th and put Blanco back in the pen if needed.

You get two bats back in Altuve and Altuve. Get a left handed OF/1B bat.

Diaz to C 3 games in 6, DH in 2, rest 1. That puts Machete behind the plate at most 3 games a week.

Of course I have 0 confidence Dusty does that. In the playoffs Machete will catch every game. We all know it.

Another starter could move someone to the bullpen and address it that way. Regardless, I agree on being overworked. I do like the 2 inning Montero role. He's done well there the last 2 outings.

If teams are serious about winning it all, teams should be willing to part with people, even if they are currently in position to make the post season. I think most GMs are willing to work out a deal that makes their team better, even if they are currently in a post season position. If I'm San Fran's GM and I can flip Pederson to fill two needs, why wouldn't I do it? I still have to compete with LA and Arizona for the division, not to mention having to be better than Philly, Miami, Milwaukee and either of LA/Arizona for the current WC.

Completely agree on the pen needing load reduction.

I'm excited about Altuve and Yordan coming back. Those two have to stay healthy in the second half.

It feels like Montero might have turned some sort of corner. Here's to hoping.

Why would we not get a starter and then have blanco or bielak AND France (or Urquidy) once Urquidy is back to be able to use in either 6 man rotation plus one long bullpen guy to eat innings especially in blowouts to not use pen in blowouts or even 5 man plus 2 long guys? This makes way more sense in my head because we have faith in a few guys as high leverage back of bullpen guys already so don't really need to address that. Only caveat to this would be if there's a lefty pen option that might be intriguing since we don't have one.

Dumb question alert, but if we are able to trade for a solid SP, do we consider moving CJ back to the pen for a bit? This assumes Urquidy comes back and France/Beilak remain doing what we need them to do.

I don't think the 6 man rotation is going to work since this group of starters aren't going deep. If they're not going deep the BP who would be one less arm is going to have a hard time carrying that load. Could snowball and make things worse.

Bumping an odd man out to the pen works if the FO feels confident they won't need him again to be a starter. I think this late (or at the time of the deadline) once he goes to the pen he's there for the remainder of the season.

Bolster the bullpen by adding a #2 SP:

Starters: Framber, (New Guy), CJ, HB, JP

Bullpen: Urquidy, Blanco and/or Bielak

I agree not big on 6 man but I think it's necessary to minimally have one long guy in the bullpen rest of season if not 2

Edit: get a starter in and Urquidy up. Send blanco down and send another bullpen guy down. Then have bielak and Urquidy in bullpen rest of season. But I expect we would see Urquidy and new guy up and bielak and blanco down with Urquidy or France or maybe Javier in bullpen rest of season

IMO we don't need to waste any resources on a bat. If we can snag a rental for cheap to give us a little extra versatility/insurance, great. But I think line-of-sight to our offense coming around is clear.

It starts with healthy Altuve and Yordan. The offense goes as they go. Assuming they're good, Bregman, Tucker and Abreu can help carry the load 1-5. Yainer and Chas have earned the right to play every day and Pena will be our starting SS. That's 1-8. Nine hole can be Maldy on days when he catches (Yainer DH, Yordan LF) or Julks on days Diaz catches (Julks LF, Yordan DH). I'll go to war with that offense. Anything from Brantley would be icing on cake.

I don't think we're going anywhere if Hunter and/or Javier aren't right. If either (or both) needs an IL stint in late July/early August to rest and be fresh for the stretch run, we've gotta make it happen. Urquidy coming back can help cover one spot, but it's also unclear how much longer France, Bielak and Blanco can sustain what they've given us.

To me, our most pressing need is another starter. Maybe two. A guy we can slot into our playoff 1-4 and someone to help eat innings through the end of the year. Get Gio, E-Rod or Bieber.

I understand the concern around the pen and I'm not opposed to adding another arm out there. If the offense is producing more (which it should), hopefully we have an extra game per week that doesn't require high leverage work from the pen. And like others have said, Bielak/Blanco can help eat innings out of the pen if we pickup a starter or two.

Cole started Saturday, so he'll be on 2 days rest. That statement won't sit well with Framber, but I don't really care. Let Cole take the risk.

Dusty doesn't give a **** about Cole. Burn his arm. He knows how vital Framber is for us.

Framber just needs to have safe trip to and from Seattle, avoid any kind of dugout injury, not throw one pitch.
