I wouldn't sign Bregman to anything right now.

A few thoughts on trades:
  • Very limited on lefty-handed or switch-hitting bats
  • Don't like my top targets ended up being 1 and 2 on this list.
  • The burb about the Indians "Adding controllable outfield talent could be particularly welcome." seems like a perfect landing spot for Jake and... I guess Chas
  • Jake & Chas (not Julks) were both included. 2015 might actually know his *****
  • I found it very interesting that Stroman & ERod have player options they can basically hang over teams if they suck or get hurt. That has to hurt their value.
  • I think we can easily give the team a shot in the arm with some arms. Plenty of cheap looking rentals and bullpen options. I would love to get Raley back on the cheap.
  • Still too many teams in limbo 3.5 weeks out.

Giolito or Stroman would be my top targets at SP. If the Padres are sellers what about Wacha or Snell?

Would be nice to add Bellinger or Soler as well, but we may have to give up too much in our trade for SP to afford either of them. Plus I'm not sure the Cubs and/or the Marlins will be sellers.

Agree that Raley would be a nice, cheap pickup to bolster our bullpen. I'd like to pick someone up that can eat some middle innings in August and September and not have to rely on Seth for all of that (even though he's been pretty good).

I just don't know what the Indians are sending back. Bieber looks like an innings eater so I suspect you are paying for his past rather than what he is. Prospects would be an easier swap and then another trade or basically a 3 way trade.

When looking at relief options, look at non-rentals.

I'll take Giolito, Verdugo, and Raley. Good?

No thanks on Stroman despite his great last name.

I'll take Jack Flaherty or Giolito and a bullpen arm.

I think the lineup will be fine as long as Yordan and Altuve come back fine. Adding a cheap bat for depth wouldn't be the worst idea though

I'm not sure why Breggy can't figure it out or if fatherhood is messing with him (although that's a big stretch). He has SUCH a competitive streak I just can't figure it out.

Now, if we finally get robo-umps he automatically becomes a lot more valuable but I don't think that's anytime soon.

He suffers from paralysis by analysis. Gone is the swagger and playing the game instinctively. Now he's a robot

Probably adding some extra pressure to be the man without Yordan, too.

A few days ago in Dusty's postgame someone asked him about Julks drawing more walks, and they were clearly leading him into some positive comments about Julks' improved patience leading to good results…

And I'm paraphrasing here, but Dusty said something like "I'm not sure if I like that. We want him to be very aggressive".
It might be time to start questioning his mental stability. Getting on base is a bad thing if it's not via a hit?

I think Bregman walks a very fine line. He's not a big dude. He doesn't have blistering power. He's slow. Look at his exit velos and barrels, they've never stood out. He sets a very high floor with his ability to draw walks and not strike out. He's very good at not whiffing and chasing. Then goes from decent to excellent by being able to abuse the short porch and just generally pulling the ball where he needs closer to 350+ to get it out and not 415. That is why when you look at his xwOBA in good years vs bad years vs solid years, its not incredibly different.

Good (18 & 19) - .369 & .373
Solid (17 & 22) - .338 & .342
Okay (20, 21, & 23) - .332, .332, & .342

If you look at Bregman's year-over-year stats, he's incredibly consent as Zone Swing%, Zone Contact%, Chase%, Chase Contact%, GB%, FB%, LD%, Exit Velo, Barrel%, Hard Hit%, LA, and so on don't fluctuate wildly.

What stands out this year is that he's "unlucky" side of things where his actual wOBA is below his xwOBA. In all other years, it's been the opposite. I would wager he still has some positive regression coming. Another way to look at it is that he's hitting the ball normally yet his BABIP is a career low at .249.

If he hits a handful of Crawford Box shots this month, he'll be "back to normal" statically.

Checked MLB.tv as my workday was winding down, saw the Reds finish off a four game sweep of the Nationals. Commentator mentioned the Reds are 19-3 in their last 22 road games, which I assume includes their sweep of us. Wow.

Bregman turned his swagger/external fire off. He hasn't been the same since.

Back to the Bregman has lost the fire conversation. Happens every season every time he hits slump.

Bregman is just a streaky hitter. I think his eye and zone discipline is almost a fault. Almost like he goes up there looking to walk. I wish he'd go up there looking to do damage then take the walk if he doesn't get his pitch.

I think the same can be said for his competitiveness. It's so strong it becomes a fault. He presses a lot and overthinks and it snowballs.

I'd like to see him bat 3rd behind Pena and in front of Tucker when Yordan is out.

He absolutely turned the swagger off after 2019 (I suspect due to the scandal breaking) and has not performed at MVP level since then.
You don't think the ball changing effected him more? All his 340-foot dingers turned into 325-foot popouts.

Yes I get it and I agree. He's probably a goner. But it doesn't have anything to do with Preston. If the Astros match the Yankees he's staying in Houston. Yes I know they won't.
That would be hilarious if it was. "I don't want your 30 million a year because you cut my brother" lol

So we're all agreed. Bregman sucks and should be traded at the deadline.

(btw, that was a joke)

It's irrelevant. Nobody is giving anything for a meh 3B making $30m a year.

I know it's your least favorite thing about sports, but do you deny that mental pressure can affect players in different (sometimes negative) ways?

Sure but a Bregman just had a 12 game stretch of 200 wRC+ right after Yordan went out.

Are we cherry picking, now? Which games were those? What's his production since that run ended?

And we don't know how taxing it might have been for him to do that night in and night out. Maybe he needs a break.

Part of Abreu's recent hot stretch came after that 3 day break he got in June. Bregs probably needs something similar, although he might not want the time off.

Heard an interesting stat while listening to MLB Tonight. Jack Flaherty has pitched three really bad games this year. In all other starts he has a 2.71 ERA. Might be able to get a good pitcher on the cheap, relatively speaking, if those were anomalies.

My issue, and I assume Farmer's to an extent, is there is a lot of made up narratives about guys that are completely unfounded. Most of the times the narratives are bagging on the player too.

"Fatherhood has really taken the fire out of Bregman." Ok, but how about last year when Bregman went on a long tear after having the kid and the joke was he needs to have another?

It's the same stuff as the Astros are down 2 in the bottom of the seventh and the comments saying this team has no fire start to come out and then they end up winning the game.

Not saying a players' mentality don't have an effect, but it's like it's forgotten baseball is a freakin hard sport and most players are streaky. Slumps are a part of the game and some guys don't feel they should pimp stuff when they're in a slump.

Bregman is a solid player but not a star. He's been important to this team. My only question is what you do when he hits free agency. My opinion is we have more important players to pursue. Really the only reason I'm hesitant to say he's definitely gone is because we have absolutely no one to take over at 3B in the farm.

Didn't Bregman have kind of average numbers last year then went on a tear in August and Sept with an OPS of .900+ ?

If he demands the money of a solid player and not a star, then we should be able to keep him.
