Yes, that sucked, but Hakeem was a greatly diminished player and didn't want to take a pay cut. Seeing Altuve in a uniform that's not the Astros would be unfathomable. That absolutely must be an extension they make happen.
While I don't hate anyone for wanting $4M more at the end of their career, Hakeem could easily have retired a Rocket if he wanted to. Don't forget that a lot of this is always up to the player.
I'd extend Altuve only with the numbers listed.

I've been told there's a "less than 1% chance" he comes back.
That said, things can change.. but that's where we're at as it stands right now.

Like I said, it's not all about money in this case from what I was told. There's some sour grapes involved. I don't know enough details to feel comfortable putting it out there but again I've been told there's less than a 1% chance he stays in Houston.
Things can change. I would love to bring him back if things get worked out and the price is right. But that's what I was told during Spring Training.

Altuve took a ridiculously cheap deal to get paid early. It was basically 6 years at 25 M (4 @ 12.5 with 2 options years). Instead of just playing it year by year with those 2 option years, the Astros gave him a "7/163.5" extension, but it was more like tacking on a 5-year 151 M & fully guaranteeing his option years. His career earnings would have been 176 M but with Covid, it ends up more like 161 M after 2024. 161 is nothing to sneeze at, but you are right, it is not a lot in the mega contract era.W said:

Hensley has a lot of versatility which makes him valuable off the bench during times like this. He's also on the 40 man roster already.
I get it but I also understand that roster management is not always about bringing up the best player.
