A month ago I don't think I even knew what the oblique muscles were. Following the Astros this year is like a lesson in anatomy.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't add him for Trout before Tucker because of the game being in Seattle.

He doesn't deserve it this year but it's MLB playing favorites.

It's just the usual but moreso. How many recent Astros have lived up to their big $100+M deals, whether here or elsewhere? Springer, Correa, and Bregman have all underperformed. Too early on JV but that doesn't look good either. His extension with us also was also money down the toilet. Cole has arguably been good enough but we haven't gotten to the back half. Basically Altuve has been worth it and that's it. Seems like the formula is sign them with more than 2 years of control left while you have leverage or let them walk is the way to go.

And literally hit major on a rookie every year.

That's the rub. Need the farm to replace guys and spend wisely on the mid tier free agents.

it's very tricky navigating the minefield of mega-contracts

and there's no doubt that one major reason for the Astros' long run of success...

the franchise has not been stung by bad long-term contracts...like the Angels, Rangers, Red Sox, Tigers, etc..,

Honestly since we began this Golden Era of Astros baseball I can't give two fcks about AS selections.

It's always been a joke but I've now realized its just for all the losers who have nothing to celebrate. Look no further than the losers to our north.

It no longer bothers me that we don't get selections. It didn't bother me when our guys declined when it was in LA.

I'm completely apathetic to it all.

Only position I care about is manager. Astros just need to keep placing their manager in the ASG and I'll be happy.

I'm sorry but Bregman has been a major part of our team post extension and has won a ring. You can not clump him with those other two. They got more, later and didn't win a ring after they left. Extensions can't only be counted as a win if they are a top player or we will never sign an extension again.

Don't be ridiculous

This is pretty good…

Apparently Burger's wife noticed something off in his hitting stance and he credited a HR to her and Liam's wife noticed he was tipping pitches and he corrected it.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the muscles I had never heard of before were aptly named, if not by the injuries themselves.

Spencer Arrighetti threw three innings for Sugar Land last night. Gave up a hit and a walk and struck out four. Not bad at all.

Also.. Cody Bellinger update (I still believe he's a big target for us based off what I'm hearing): Last 7 games he's slashing .407/.433/.444 and through the last 15 games he's slashing .302/.328/.340.

A small dose of reality on Bellinger. Note his SLG is barely above his BA so it's been all singles. One double his last 30 PA. During this time his BABIP is a crazy .440. That's not sustainable.

I'll add this. His metrics are horrible.

With the trade deadline looming it's always fun to play arm chair GM… but I'm curious what are moves you wanted us to make in the past that would have been HORRIBLE.

For example: once Correa left after 2021, I really wanted us to sign Kris Bryant and move Bregman to short. I also thought trading for Sonny Gray at the 2017 deadline would be a "game changer"

I want our priority 1 to be a #2/3 starter. Javier is worrying the crap out of me.

I think my all-time worst want was JBJ after Springer. I figured he would be plus defensively and average on offense with some flashes.

JBJ wRC+ / WAR
2021: 37 / -1.5
2022: 56 / -0.2
2023: 4 / -0.6

I also wanted him, or Benintendi. I think I just had 2018 ALCS in my head of how good I thought those two guys were.

It's pretty crazy how none of the "big" deals we missed out on look great in hindsight. Maybe Cole would have been a good keep but the rest? It's pretty apparent paying for past performance doesn't get you a ton anymore.

While not a big deal, I think the biggest "miss" was not bringing back Charlie Morton. Especially given we faced him and lost to him twice in back to back postseasons. He would have been cheap and IMO we win the 2020 World Series if he's on our team and not Tampa. He went 2-0 against us in that ALCS with 11 shutout innings.

Posted earlier, but I think our #1 need right now is SP. In light of Javy's struggles, we've gone from needing a solid 4/5 to needing a 2/3. It will be more expensive especially since not too many teams will be sellers, and everyone always looks for pitching.

Add a good SP and a LH bat. Those would be my 2 targets.

Over the last 8.

.419 BA
.441 OBP
.484 SLG
.401 wOBA
154 wRC+

Amazing!

But....

83.8 EV
7.1% HH%
0.0% Barrel %
xBA .244

You are 100% correct. Not sustainable. I guess April was a bit of a fluke.

I was also totally fine letting Morton walk. Thought we had squeezed every ounce out of him and that he'd mostly be hurt/decline post 2018. Kudos to the guy for still balling 5 years later.

I think the Covid year really helped him. Only having to make about 12 starts including postseason probably saved his arm in the long haul

it is amazing how playing on a world series winning team...elevates the perception or value of a player

Bradley jr. and Benintendi from the Red Sox...2018 title

and many of the Cubs from the 2016 title

Agreed.

I want one of...
  • Verdugo
  • Pederson
  • Candelario (switch)
  • Conforto

And
  • Giolito
  • Cobb
  • E Rodriguez (if healthy)
  • Bieber
  • Flaherty, Montgomery, Smyly (if we miss/pass on the 4 above)

I included Giants, but I am not sure they'll be sellers.

We do that and I will be feeling very good about the rest of the season.

Verdugo would be awesome and probably my #1 choice. Second choice would be Lane Thomas. I'd take any of the top 4 pitchers you listed.

I was all in on resigning JV - that looks like it was $40million saved.

Beware of overperforming Nationals players. Remember Josh Bell last year? He was tearing the cover off the ball, and as soon as he got to San Diego, he couldn't hit to save his life.
