So what did we decide a Robert trade would require? I really like the idea, but it would probably put an expiration date on this era of Astros baseball.
I think Gilbert would have to headline the package. Jake or Chas would be part of it. Korey Lee would probably be a nice add too because they don't have a catcher of the future. Then add in a couple top 15 arms. Maybe that's close.

I'd be curious our reaction if they demand Diaz (which they might).

I got to watch him play in Corpus, and thought he was really special. Not only for his power, but for his ability to work counts and draw walks.

Yes, this was literally 10 years ago, but hopefully he has still got some of that in him. I am probably unrealistically excited about him, but talent is talent and he has it.

I first threw out the insane Robert, Cease, and Graveman package, but my point remains that Chicago continues to have the most SP options available, so if you are willing to invest in Robert (and I absolutely would be), it makes sense to look at big packages that include pitching.

To me, this is the clear scenario where you give up Gilbert, Meyers, and another OF prospect or two, plus Lee, Leon, Ullola OR Arreghetti (not both), and some filler plus 40 man relief such as Perez.

Robert gives you 4.5 years of elite defense and offense in CF which is a full window stretch. If you keep Chas, you can move him to LF and still have room to work in Brantley if he returns in effective fashion. It is the one place we can really upgrade without creating a roster/lineup crunch.

Cease gives you another impact playoff rotation arm with immense upside and innings eating yo help get our bullpen fresh again. To me, we need high upside contigency in case Javier isn't himself come postseason.

Alternatively, I have kept an eye on Verdugo and wondered if Paxton might be a package option as he has been effective since coming off the IL. I have always been a fan of his ability since his SEA days.

The Yankees/Chas thing makes for interesting headlines, but there is NOTHING that there that we would want. The Yankees are more desperate for offensive upgrade than we are.

I have to be honest - I do have questions about this sudden reemergence of Jon Singleton. Applying some professional skepticism, I do wonder if he might end up on an 80-day non-paid vacation.

I don't like that Dana is talking big league player for big league player. He's thinking too narrowly because that severely limits teams where that could work. The Yankees, for instance, don't have anyone that would be a fit. He needs to look at trading Chas for prospects and then prospects for whoever he wants. Basically what he is looking at doing is bartering when he should look at prospects as currency.

Just give Dana a call - I'm sure he'll listen to your suggestion.

It says the Yankees had interest in McCormick. And then it says the teams never got close to a deal.

Jake is starting to look more like he did pre-injury. Which is what I've been wanting to see happen because I had high hopes for him back in '21.

We truly have an abundance of riches with Chas, Jake

good. we need them to keep producing and one be ready to be traded.

Why would you want to trade either?

Did you just bump a 6 week old post with an article I already posted?

very decent chance of this. Nothing to lose for him at this point.

Singleton's heart was never in baseball. He had all the talent in the world but he didn't put any work in and was just.. lazy.

I think his resurgence has more to do with maturity and benefitting from putting the work in. I'm pulling for him.

Outside the box of what I've seen discussed here, but what if there is a 3-way trade potential to move Tucker to a contender, who moves prospects to someone out of the race, and we get major league help (Robert) without stripping what remains of the farm.

Could be a way of salvaging Tucker if front office thinks there is no way of signing him. Would essentially be swapping tucker for longer control of an OF talent and covering CF which is tougher than a corner OF spot.

Maybe we could hang on to Gilbert to replace Tucker and find another OF bat in the mean time.

If the biggest need is offense why give up one of your best offensive players?

That may help in 2026 & 2027, but what about now?

I'm going to combine some data points and then come up with a relatively simple trade that will never happen.

1) We want a lefty bat.

2) We don't really have the farm to acquire anyone of note

3) The Mets seem to be willing to eat some salary for their players.

All that said, it seems really simple. Send Pena to the Mets for Lindor and have the Mets eat a good chunk of that salary. There could be other pieces but that's the main deal. While underperforming, Lindor still grades out very highly on the defensive side and his batted ball metrics are shockingly as good or better than it's ever been. His barrel % is a career high, his launch angle is higher, etc. He is striking out more than ever but that's still about league average. Really the biggest issue is he has been better this year vs lefties than righties, but historically that hasn't been a problem.

Even with the Mets eating a big chunk of salary (lets say $75M), you will regret the contract at some point. But could he be a difference maker in a WS run? Absolutely and if he does you won't give a **** about the rest.

I would much rather have a cheap controllable Peña than an expensive Lindor on a horrible contract, even if the Mets kick in money.

How much more would Roberts cost than Soto? More control, but at the risk of hampering the farm. What happens in case of injury? There are fewer and potentially worse options to fill in.

If it works out, it strengthens the big league roster for a good while. I guess you just can't worry about injuries.

I don't think the Padres will trade Soto, but if they do, I bet their leadership would demand the farm, so I don't think he would necessarily be cheaper.

As for Roberts insurance, that is why I would construct a trade without losing Chas. I personally think Chas is invaluable due to his flexibility - he is good enough to be an everyday starting CF but plays all three spots well, has a good bat, an outstanding platoon option, and four more years of control.

If you acquire Roberts, I want Chas on my roster as a platoon LF or 4th outfielder.

However, Chas's flexibility is what likely makes him attractive to other clubs.

I wasn't suggesting that this would entirely close the gap this year, but would be a way of getting value out of Tucker who we likely will lose without anything in return. With a great centerfielder we could look for another corner OF to replace Tucker as a rental or short length option.

I certainly wouldn't allow Chas to be a dealbreaker in a truly great trade, but if you start including Gilbert and others, I am not sure Chas over Meyers moves the needle THAT much.

There is a 0.0% chance Tucker is getting traded this season.

There is no realistic return that would be anywhere near as strong as the relatively cheap 2.5 years of All-Star performance he's going to give us.

Meyers and good prospects for a declining pitcher? I'll take my chances with Door #2, Bob.

I think he's a solid 3/4 pitcher. He's had a few bad games this year but still goes deep into the games. Already at 106 innings pitched this year too.

I didn't realize how bad his xERA is up and K% is down. I guess trade compensation would depend on how fixable we think he is. Even if he can only be a good 3/4, I think that would be worth giving up Jake + a prospect or two for.
