Not sure what Lee and JT have in common other than the fact that they're both catchers

Building numbers as our number 1 trade piece?
Correct.

Keep in mind.. of course Maldy is going to praise Korey Lee. What else is he going to say?

Korey Lee is a nice player but the organization sees Yainer Diaz as the catcher of the future. Korey Lee will likely be a big trade piece. He won't gain value sitting on the bench in the big leagues, so let him rake in AAA.

I know the team wasn't super impressed with what they saw during Korey's brief stint in the big leagues. It was a small sample, but something they saw really turned them off of him. I'm not sure what it was.

Also editing to add: Last July when Maldy said that, the team wasn't anywhere as high on Yainer as they are today. The progress he made during the offseason and through spring training has been nothing short of incredible.

I don't want any part of Stroman to be honest with you. Everything I've heard about him tells me if he's not happy he's not going to perform. He loves Chicago and wants to be in Chicago. If he doesn't want to be here, I don't think it's going to work out well. Would love to be wrong though.

Havent read this yet but if we have the next JT why are we keeping him in AAA.
Here is the best info from the story.

Quote:

SUGAR LAND, Texas Korey Lee is in limbo. He stands out in a minor-league system lacking attractive prospects and plays for a franchise that plans to be aggressive around the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Lee lost the spring training competition to crack the major-league roster and hasn't sniffed it since.

...

"I still see him as catcher depth and I still see him as a major-league player here. Maldy's contract is up next year. I don't know where that's going to go. Lee is clearly in the mix for us in the future," general manager Dana Brown told The Athletic earlier this month.

"I think Korey Lee is still in his development stages," Brown said. "I think he can swing the bat. Catching is a two-man job. We did it a bunch in Atlanta and, I really believe, over 162 games, you have to split that up. I think it's a two-man position, personally. I think there's a scenario where they could be splitting time next year and both getting a lot of at-bats."

A month before making those comments, Brown told the team's flagship radio station that Diaz is "the future for us behind the plate." Diaz's playing time has only increased since, perhaps as a result of Brown's intervention. Diaz has shown the sport's sixth-fastest pop time and second-hardest throwing arm in the 22 games he's appeared behind the plate.

My takeaway is that Dana is comfortable rolling with Diaz/Lee next year, but Rome heavily infers he's trade bait too.

Also, keep in mind.. if Dana flat out says "Yeah, we plan to trade Lee. We don't see him as part of the future." what does that do to his trade value?

I think if we make any major trade he's probably included. If we only make smaller adjustment piece trades it's Diaz and Lee next year

Agree. It's hard to know the full context without listening to the question/full conversation. But if we're actively shopping Lee then it's no different messaging wise to other GMs that he's not part of our future. It's not going to change their valuation of Lee. I guess the trick would be to get the other GMs to ask about Lee.

24 years old infielder (primarily a SS that can also play 3B and 2B) with strong numbers in AA and AAA this year.

Jose Abreu has been on a roll since we signed Jon Singleton.

What a wild sentence. What a freaking wild, wild sentence that I never expected to type on the Astros thread in 2023.

I need a drink.

The rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated….With 2 or 3 (if you include LMJ) of our starters out, our best player on the DL for 6 weeks, and our spark plug out the first two months, we are still 6 games over .500 and easily within striking distance of a wild card spot. When Yordan comes back, we should reel off a few 5-6 game winning streaks and greatly improve our position. While the upcoming Lone Star Series is a little scary given our current situation, if we can somehow manage a split, I think it's a huge moral victory.

What's the deal with Singleton? Wasn't it less than a month ago he got brought up to a big league club and now we have him on a minor league contract…I assume that means he was cut quickly?
texasaggie2015

Brewers took a flyer on him and signed him to a minor league contract. He got called up when they needed him. Struggled in the bigs and got cut. Astros need first base depth so they're taking a flyer now. One of those "nothing to lose" things.

I'm definitely pulling for the guy. I love a good comeback story... but I hope we don't need him.

that is good for Abreu...

the Astros need an .800 OPS from him in July, August, and September too

I could not be happier for him. Hope he keeps this up throughout the remainder of the season. If he does, you can put him behind Yordan and suddenly, this line-up is what we hoped it would be.

I just have this feeling once we get Yordan back that things are going to get fun.

1. Altuve 2B
2. Bregman 3B
3. Yordan DH/LF
4. Impact Bat via trade CF (LF if no Brantley)
5. Tucker RF
6. Abreu 1B
7. Brantley LF/DH (or Chas/Meyers)
8. Diaz C
9. Pena SS

*Move Pena up if Brantley doesn't return in form

I doubt it. He's still throwing bullpens. If he starts his rehab/build up now, he probably won't be back until late July.

I love this thread. Down in the 5th. Higher than a kite in the 7th. It's like riding the worlds steepest and fastest rollercoaster while blindfolded.

I'm still not sold. Realistically they need to win 4 of the next 5. They can't trade wins and losses anymore.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

May as well start the good karma begging early.

I'd like to be no more than 4 games back at the ASB. Bring back Yordan, Brantley and Urquidy after and let's roll. Plus add a piece or two at the trade deadline.
