this was a big win for wildcard purposes tonight

Yankees lose, Angels lose, Orioles lose

So you're saying the Rangers gained a game in the eventual wildcard standings?

Seems like a normal 6,4,3 would have got them out of that, thanks Nats
Playing in, you have to kind of throw backward to 2nd. Priority #1 is stop the runner from scoring. Can't risk losing on the batter beating the relay to 1st. Especially with Jake's speed.

Yep, have to throw home there, they're in too tight to turn 6-4-3. If there's a DP to be had there, it starts at home.

The bag is in fair territory. Where else is he supposed to run. Clean play by Jake.
Two things. First, Jake was running half over the line, so he was half in the runner's lane, the rulebook says completely in the runner's lane (the runner's lane includes the foul line). Second, he was already on the base when the ball hit him, so that may have contributed to the non-call. Frankly, it wasn't that close a play, he was there easily.

It could very well have been called, we got away with one. Still a W

You have to run in the runner's lane until the last step on close plays. This is not a new rule, and it's been gone over in detail here several times.

How would you have called him out?

His right foot is pretty clearly inside the foul line and if I were the first baseman I would think that his helmet interfered with the ability to catch the ball. But I'm not complaining.

What? His right foot is 100% on the chalk in that picture.

Actually the way I see it half his foot is on the chalk line.

This just shows how hard the ump's job can be.

Even if he isn't on the bag yet, you're allowed to be in fair territory while stepping on the bag. The base is literally in fair territory while the lane is in foul.

The question would be did he interfere with the catch at first before that. I think the answer is no.

1. Jake is a right handed hitter, he is not going to go straight towards the base from the left side of the plate which is going to put him inside the line as he goes towards first base. NO ONE runs towards the outside of the line out of the box. NO ONE. That is nuts, His track to first base is normal. He is running to the bag. As he should do.

2. The picture Martinez shows is when Jake is about half way up the line and he is edging ever closer to the line, which by the time he gets to the base. He is totally in line with with the right foot hiting the right side of the bag, not the left. He is in his proper lane.

3. The throw is bad. the throw is over the bag at first base. The bulk of the base itself is inside the line, the throw needed to be outside the base. That is what is taught, the throw is not outside the base, it over the base Jake has every right to be where he is.

4. At no time did Jake attempt to veer inside, he just followed the natural line form the right batters box to first base, the straight line. This is not interference, no where close.

I agree that he didn't interfere with the throw, but didn't he interfere with the catch?

I've wondered why 1B don't stretch into fair territory on these plays to give the catcher a better target.

IIRC the lines have nothing to do with it. The runner establishes his baseline.

The throw itself is over the bag, period. And that is why it cannot be interference. The 1st baseman did set up in the right place the catcher brought the first baseman into Jake to catch the ball. This is not interference period.

Dave Martinez can EAD. Two things

1. Yasmani Grandal and it was ruled legal.

2. MLB had every chance to change this over the offseason while they made bases 0.05% bigger for "safety". They could have added the safety base. And they didn't.

If the ball had hit Jake's helmet before the first baseman's glove, would that have been interference?

Happy to get the W especially after the recent slump, but I hope Ryan is okay. I think that was his third blown save this season, and he wouldn't speak to the media afterwards. Dude has meant so much to this team and is being counted on to slam the door no matter the score.

Grandal is a perfect example. Jake's was less egregious than Grandal.

Fun fact. The first baseman's glove actually hits Jake's helmet before the ball. Instagram posted a video from the dugout that is super clear.

Potentially. Umpires's digression.

Yep. Catcher was well in fair territory, and threw it outside the foul line

How the ball is thrown over the base. Jake is in line with the base. His head is over the base. Look at the line of the throw is is over the base. You cannot call interference on a runner for being over the base.

What is the white line parallel to the foul line for? Is the runner not required to run between those two lines?

I think we've seen plenty of evidence that the answer is "no"
OPAG

If the catcher throws it at the first basemans head (as he is taught) there is no issue here. Right handed hitters running from the box are going run inside the line on the way to first.

That is the running lane. You go in there you're safe from interference calls.
