I've no doubt missed alot of Bellinger discussion over the first few months, so I ask this question humbly... are we sure that his form is back and that he's a no-brainer upgrade over Dubon/Chas/Jake?

I wouldn't insert him in CF and play him there everyday. He's a lefty bat who can play OF and INF(1st). He's be an ideal platoon with Abreu or Chas/Jake vs RHP.

Edit- I'm slow.
What are these "platoons" you speak of

Remember when the Astros were the smartest team in baseball? I miss those days.

Bellinger already got hurt playing CF when he was here a few weeks ago. Just a reminder since we're having a bit of the injury bug so far in 2023, coincidence or not.

The fact jake started so slow and Chad started pretty hot before his back issues taints those sample a bit. But the fact jake has moved to the top despite his start I believe explains why he's seeing the PT he is.

The issue to be discussed is Julks getting more time than Chaz, no excuse there besides "Dusty"
Unless the goal is to show case him a bit to trade. Julks still has room to improve as well.

I would not be surprised if we are setting up to trade 2 of the 3 of Meyer, Chas and Julks, With us keeping either Chas or Meyers.

Got busy at work so I apologize for taking a while to respond.

I don't know the details of what happened behind the scenes with Preston Tucker, but I know it doesn't have to do with him being DFAd. I was told it had more to do with how they treated him. Lots of sour grapes involved. Again, I don't know the details but I do know it will play a role in free agency.

Preston Tucker isn't the only instance I've heard of the Astros rubbing guys the wrong way during that era. I wish I knew some more details.

That being said, even if Kyle wanted to come back, I highly doubt we would pay him what he wanted... especially with the outfield depth in the farm system as strong as it is.

Also- I know this has been discussed before but I'm not sure if it was ever executed. We really need to do a TexAgs Astros game meetup.

Why?

We'd all be on our phones pulling up fangraphs, baseball reference, StatCast, etc to prove our points. We'd just be bickering in the same room drinking insanely overpriced beer instead of on my couch drinking slightly overpriced beer.

So I can openly make fun of some of you who have awful takes

I've always said it'd be funny to do it without telling anyone who anyone is.

I'm convinced by the 3rd inning I'd be able to guess who everyone is.

I just did a quick look...Bellinger has reverse splits against RHP/LHP.

Adding him as a lefty bat to platoon with Chas might not be as smart as it looks on the surface. Joc makes more sense in that regard.

Now, Bellinger as a 1B platoon might be a better option

Now look at his career stats. That will tell you a different story. 163 PAs is a very small sample size.

Well, his career stats also tell a story of falling way off a cliff since 2019. Which player is he? The one for this year, or the one from the previous 2 or 3?
texasaggie2015

Sure, but he's not a guy who has had a reverse splits throughout his career.

If Dana is looking to make a trade for a platoon/split player then he needs 100% buy-in from Dusty that it gets implemented correctly.

The last thing I wanna do is give up prospects then Dusty not use them correctly.

And that's part of the challenge for a front office. Rolling the dice and not really being sure which version of the player shows up.

For the record, his career slugging against RHP is only about 40 points higher than it is for this year. Not sure what that comes out to in terms of actual extra base hits over a season. OPS is about 100 points higher, though.

Is this where we discuss which statistic is best to measure a player under certain situations?

wOBA is just a quick and easy single metric that'll do a better job than BA, OBP, SLG, or OPS.

The visual shows there has been a significant gap every year (good years and bad) except for the early part of 2023.

Looks like he's crushing fastballs more than ever

Small sample. That's likely all there is to it. He's been hurt for a good chunk of this year, so he's played a lot less games than most up to this point.

It's a good point. He has fewer ABs than Julks

Frankly the cynic in me would be very skeptical that he's doing that all on the up and up.

As long as he can do it for us too, does it matter in baseball?

This is interesting but maybe should have been obvious.

Guys who worked more slowly seem to be more greatly impacted by the pitch clock.

Their stuff ain't as good.

That's what I read most likely happened to Alex Manoah. Interesting stuff. And quite unfortunate.

Robbie Grossman being the 3rd DH in voting is more comical than Julks being 4th

Granted his season doesn't deserve one vote but for name recognition alone the fact that Carlos Correa is not in top 10 shortstops is the definition of being traded away and disappearing, never to be heard from again.

Outside of Houston, who is going to vote for him, even if he was having a worthy season?

I don't remember where I heard or read it but the thought was that's what's bothering Manoah.

Having to work quicker coupled with the fact that he's not in the best shape and the lack of conditioning could be a reason why he's struggling.
