They were extremely interested in him in the offseason. They just couldn't agree on a deal.

Because he was more of a question mark then, was probably more than we thought he was worth with the risk, and we didn't have a glaring hole at first because we signed the best 1B on the market.

I assume because we spent money and montero and abreu and thought uncle mike would be ready?

So no Brantley or LMJ till all star break - if at all this season. Is that what it's looking like - and was kind of predicted early on?

I highly doubt we see LMJ this year. As far as Brantley goes, that's what one of the weirdest things I can remember. Nobody really knows what's going on.

LMJ needs to be ramping up now and start rehab starts late this month if he were to be back after the ASB. The fact a little strain continued to cause issues/pain and required a new MRI likely means very bad news.

The way I read that LMJ tweet was that he might be done done. I assume it would maybe be something along the lines of convince him to retire so he's off the books but pay him a separate way so we fulfill a contract but we free up tax space. For now he could at least go on the 60 day opening a 40 man spot.

It's gonna be a tough pill to swallow when the Astros trade Chas to get Bellenger.

Potential World Series saving catch out the door for a giant dbag. That's the difference b/w fandom and business

Would be fun to here him answer any questions he may need to field on his stance of the astros cheating scandal (assume someone would ask him).

Remember last year when we got Mancini and Vazquez and Dusty's main comment was we added "speed" to this team? Senile old man
This was an issue on Dusty's teams in the past. He tended to start loading up on sort of hybrid players that had speed but just were not that good.

For my sins, I have watched a ton of Dusty baker teams in the past(going back 20 years). I have never been impressed by his coaching, he is a good guy that the players love and he has made a lot of money doing so.

going back to last night's game...Meyers misplay in centerfield was so, so bad...

it's the kind of thing that leaves a lasting impression on the new GM.

Jake may be the one that goes

That's certainly possible. I can't even figure out how he did that, either. Did he take his eyes off it and then lose where it was going? He ran past it by 5 feet

One of Jake's best qualities as a baseball player is his hustle and the way he plays his ass off every single day.

That's also his biggest curse at times.. he tries way too hard and does things like that. I'm sure the uncertainty of his future in the organization plays a big role. He feels the need to prove himself.

Possible guys on the current big league team that could have trade value if a deal was out there that required MLB guys to be involved.

Chas
Jake
Julks
Dubon
Martinez
Bielak
France
Blanco

Am I missing anybody?

and regarding the injured veteran players...

did the Astros get sandbagged?

i.e. someone was giving the front office overly optimistic reports dating back to the offseason

perhaps taking advantage of the GM-less period

I don't think the Jake play was anything more than he took a bad line, tried to make up for it by kicking into 6th gear and just plain overran the drop point. He misjudged it.

Jake has really good instincts and gets great jumps on balls. He makes hard catches look easy. He is also prone to making real gaffes. It's a weird combination.

Just for fun I'm ranking them in terms of value... just my opinion of course:

Good value:

Chas
Jake

Little value:

France
Blanco
Dubon

Very little to no value:

Julks
Martinez
Bielak

Julks needs to learn to walk. His BA and SLG are fine. He's not a great defender but you can hide that in LF. He's got decent pop and speed. If his OBA were not his BA he would look a lot better metric wise.

Of course the chance of him learning to walk more at his age and at this level are between slim and none. And that's the problem.

At least he's not Javy Baez.

It looks like we'll have to part with either Chas or Meyers in order to get one impact bat. Probably Chas.

To get a second one I suppose we'll have to trade prospects. Teams are going to want Gilbert but I think the Astros see him as untouchable (and possibly even a late callup to the big club). Maybe this is the season we trade some of our minor league lingerers like Forrest (if he has any trade value.....).
texasaggie2015

Yeah, I'll genuinely be shocked if both Chas and Jake are with the club after the deadline.

As far as Gilbert goes, you're right he's considered untouchable (unless there's an offer that just blows them away). I don't expect him to contribute to the big league club this year however as he's currently playing through an injury. I think that's going to slow down his progress just slightly.

Chas would be under team control thru the 2026 season

Jake thru the 2027 season

Dana has pieces to work with

If you listened to the broadcast he hit a sprint speed of like 35 Jake was FLYING to that ball, yall can talk crap all you want, no one else on our team probably gets to that ball. He just ran so fast he wasn't able to slow down and adjust at the end to catch it. The way the ball bounced if it lands in front of an outfielder it still bounces over the fence for a double. However had someone attempted a diving catch to prevent it from hitting the ground cleanly its probably a triple or worse.

Correct. And part of the reason why I'd like to not just get a rental for this season. Preferably someone that is at least under contract for next season.

This is the perfect example of why errors don't tell are great story as to how good a defender is.

Surely there's a team out there that thinks all Abreu needs is a change of scenery and will give us something for him. Right?

Doubtful. If that were the case, we'd likely still need to eat a lot of his contract.

So he's perfect for the Angels, Yankees or Mets from office

I guess I see a distinction between talking crap and stating a fact: he f-cked up on that play. We all know he's a great defender.

Sorry but Chas also gets to that ball. Yes it was an over hustle play but he's a big leaguer. It was a play he should have made. End of story

This is all per Baseball Trade Values. No trade simulator is going to be perfect or even great, but this is the best one I have come across.

Astros Med Value
  • Highest: Tucker - 102.1
  • Lowest: Abreu - (-37)
  • McCormick - 34.1
  • Diaz - 21.8
  • Meyers - 9.6
  • Dubon - 3.6
  • Julks - 0.9

Astros Minor League Med Value
  • Gilbert - 19.2
  • Lee - 9.1
  • Clifford - 6.5
  • Leon - 4.6
  • Barber - 2.2
  • Dirden - 1.6
  • Whitley - 1.4

Trade Targets
  • Wheeler - 40.5
  • Verdugo - 22.2
  • Civale - 15.4
  • Giolito - 15.0
  • Bellinger - 11.7
  • Smyly - 11.1
  • Stroman - 9.8
  • Conforto - 5.7
  • Soler - (-4.1)
  • Pederson - (-5.4)
  • Jimenez - (-7.9)

A few thoughts - Chas really isn't that high, right? Bats are going to come more cheaply than arms. A lot of emphases for this has to be on age and contract situation.
