He should probably expect to be thrown at tomorrow, but I absolutely rewound it several times to see it over and over. I'd be pissed if it was against us, though.

The real issue is how slow does that runner have to be to not beat that out?

I think it was just very sharply hit. Bryan Reynolds was the runner. If this isn't worthy of getting beaned, I don't know what is

Same. Adding an extra variable like that, especially with a runner on 3rd, is incredibly dumb

Why would this be worth of getting hit? I hope every one of our opponents try this. Add more tricks. No looks. Behind the backs. Go for it. Baseball is hard enough. He'll look like the ultimate jackass when he screws up.

I would guess Cash will put an end to it. He's not stupid.

This is delicious.

You can see the drop during the 2021 crackdown.

Guessing we can expect to hear more trash from everyone about 2017 to deflect from this.

All I can think about is all of those batters he faced over the years that were just trying to make a living playing baseball. They were sent back to the minors, or even had to quit baseball, because they weren't successful against this cheater.

I think I'm doing this right. Right?

I can't believe we were cheated out of a 3rd title in 2019 due to this cheating.

What an absolute disgrace to the game. Think of all the kids who looked up to him. Unbelievable. Where has the integrity gone? Ban him for life. I mean are you kidding me... **** that cheater!!!!

I wonder if this is why Verlander doesn't like him. Justin busted his ass to be where he is and this guy using the sticky stuff to stay elite. Of course Justin turned a blind eye to the trash can banging so who knows. Maybe Max is just an ass hole.

Justin used it too. His spin rates jumped when he came to Houston. Then when he came back in 2022 they were way down.
Ag_07

Yeah they all used it

Difference is Justin didn't act like a sanctimonious jackass when checked only to get busted for it later on.

Wasn't Spider-tack or the pine-tar/rosin mixture considered legal up until 2021 or so?

I don't think spidertack (and similar) was ever legal. It was "accepted" b/c no one ever checked for it
texasaggie2015

It was never legal, but just about everyone used it. That goes for Houston, LA, every team in between. Nobody checked for it and everyone turned a blind eye to it.

After the Astros "scandal", the whole sign stealing thing got popular and hitters in return pointed out the widespread spider-tack usage and that's when MLB was forced to step in and do something about it.

Edit to add: I believe it was Trevor Bauer who said he thinks 70% of big league pitchers use it. I think that number is pretty conservative.

Exactly. Its always been against the rule. Now its just being enforced 95% of the time instead fo 1% of the time.

Quote:

Rule 3.01 states: "No player shall intentionally discolor or damage the ball by rubbing it with soil, rosin, paraffin, licorice, sand-paper, emery-paper or other foreign substance."

Rule 6.02 expands on 3.01 by stating, among other things, that a pitcher may not "apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball;" "deface the ball in any manner;" "throw a shine ball, spit ball, mud ball, or emery ball;" "have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance;" or "attach anything to his hand, any finger or either wrist (e.g., Band-Aid, tape, Super Glue, bracelet, etc.)."

I know this topic has been beaten to hell, but Chandler's article on Yainer yesterday had a few things that caught me eye.

Yainer's English is fine... or at least good enough. And Brown knows a little but of Spanish.

Quote:

The two 24-year-olds are an odd pairing on paper only. Diaz is Dominican. Brown was born and raised in Detroit and boasts a mean Midwestern accent. Diaz uses an interpreter for interviews, but Brown praised him for how well he can speak English on the mound and in pregame advance meetings.

"My Spanish," Brown said with a grin, "it's enough to talk about what pitches we're going to throw and that's that."

Sounds like the defense we all see with the eye test it matching what the coaches think. Rocket arm, blocking fine, and needs to work on framing.
Quote:

"The throwing has been incredible," Collins said. "I thought he's done a really, really nice job and given himself a chance. … With the new pitch timer and disengagement rules, I think some people are being a little more aggressive and have been very successful thus far. Throwing out runners, I think, is going to be difficult and a challenge, but he's executed quality throws pretty much every time. He's given himself the best chance to throw out as many people as he can, which has been awesome."

Diaz's average 1.91-second pop time the time from a catcher receiving a pitch to a middle infielder catching a throw tied with Willson Contreras for the eighth fastest among all catchers. Starter Martn Maldonado averages 1.90 seconds. Diaz's receiving needs some improvement, Collins acknowledged, but his blocking has been "incredible." Collins surmised that some of the poor receiving or framing stems from focusing too much on being ready to block a pitch instead of concentrating on a setup.

"Some of those have been mis-locations or setups with runners on base where he's been really focused on trying to block certain pitches and we haven't quite gotten to some of those borderline pitches," Collins said. "But the blocking has been incredible, the throwing has been great. All in all, very happy. Just continue to monitor some of those close pitches."

Interesting that Dusty decided on this pairing.

Quote:

Manager Dusty Baker hatched the idea to pair Diaz with Brown following the right-hander's first start of the season.

And this is what we've all been saying. LOL 300 at bats.

Quote:

Diaz's usage is otherwise perplexing. He started Tuesday for just the ninth time in the Astros' first 30 games. Last month, general manager Dana Brown told The Athletic that Diaz will "get over the 300 at-bats that I think we need him to get." After Tuesday, Diaz has taken just 31, prolonging the puzzling use of a player supposedly on this roster for his offense.

Diaz was never going to usurp Maldonado as the team's starting catcher, but failing to give him at-bats at either designated hitter or first base seems foolish. The team still wants Diaz to improve his chase rate and curtail his free-swinging nature, but he is in his current state a better option than David Hensley or Rylan Bannon, both of whom have received DH at-bats during this homestand.

I'm going to ask the question I asked earlier but got lost in the news mix. How many homers extra per year do you think Tucker and Alvarez would have if the dimensions of left and right field at MMP were reversed?

I'm wondering if there's a way to leverage your own home ballpark, by making left field deeper, making right field shorter, and focusing on left handed power hitters.

Gotcha. That sounds more correct and reminds me, I don't think I see pitchers grabbing a handful of dirt off the mound and rubbing down the ball anymore like they used to.

Hopefully Altuve and McCormick will add some pop back into this lineup, Bregman will quit sucking, and Maldonado will lose time to Diaz.

It's hard to sequence when when two-thirds of your lineup sports a .700 or below OPS.

I think the only reason they're checking on it now is that Manfred wants to pump up the number of runs scored per game.

I still don't understand the whole 'Go wash your hands' BS

If they're checking and they find it on you that's illegal. It's either there or it isn't and if they keep that up they're gonna wade into selective enforcement waters (which they already are) but when lowly guys get busted they're gonna start publicly calling it out.

IMO the MLBPA has a reason to be concerned about that aspect.

We have one of the most shallow right fields as well. I don't think there is an easy way to look at it though. I would guess just a couple more. But also they may lose a few cheap opposite-field ones too.

He's going to get regular playing time soon. He has some off the field stuff to clean up. It's a big part of the reason Cleveland let him go. Poor work ethic, butted heads with coaches, etc. He's improved a lot and that might be an understatement.

Meat Head Max couldn't get make it through the 2021 playoffs for LA and then got shelled by San Diego in the postseason last year. Talk about a great ROI on another former National that isn't earning his pay. I can't help but laugh at all these clubs with crazy high payrolls that are struggling.
