Yainer had 3 throwdowns yesterday (1 for 3) and 1 in his previous start. While the sample is still tiny, it's a strong start. His pop time is tied in third for guys with more than 1 throwdown. His arm strength is second only to JT Realmuto.

Outside of 1 poor frame job for a nasty Abreu slider, I didn't notice anything bad behind the plate. Either the defensive issues in the scouting reports were overstated or Diaz has worked his ass off to get better.
One incident where Urquidy shook him off 5 times and then just took the pitch clock violation. Not a bug deal, but pitchers may not be getting the pitched they want. Urquidy threw a hell of a game so it is probably not an issue. He also caught Brown's outing last week that went so well if I remember correctly.

Sounds like a 50-50 thing. If Urquidy trusts him to call the game then trust him to call the game. If not, then wear it yourself and call pitches now.

I have a feeling, as an organization, our catchers are better prepared to call the most effective game. They seem to be the ones most dialed into the scouting reports and game plan. Maybe that's just a Maldonado thing tho.
He may have just misclicked the remote or something silly because he shook him off real quick in succession and the count was 2-2 if I remember and 2 outs. Either way it was good that they just let it go and got on same page to get out of the inning on next pitch. Maybe should have wasted a mound visit since Urquidy couldn't step off to reset.

Other than that one incident, they obviously worked well together. Would love to see Diaz catch 2 starters out of 5 or 6, and/or see him subbed in with relievers to get an AB or two every game. 50 starts behinds the plate would be a nice sample size to determine who is the catcher moving forward and try to keep Maldonado from physically falling apart. Add in a DH and first base relief and he could have 350+ ABs this year.

Click did well at finding under-the-radar contributors in trades

He stole Montero from Seattle right under their noses.
One of the main reasons we've had some major postseason success is our bullpen. Click did a damn good job there.

  • Traded for Riley, Garcia, Maton, Montero, & Graveman without giving up much at all.
  • Extended Pressly
  • Signed Stanek

It's been my hypothesis for a while that this is a big part of our pitching secret sauce. I don't think we groom/train our pitchers to be elite at knowing what to throw when. I think we groom/train them to be elite at executing hard/nasty pitches. Then have an experienced catcher tell them what to throw when. Best of both worlds.

Looks like we're not facing Degrom this weekend. Perez, Gray and Heaney.

I wonder if he'll still be healthy by the time we play them in early July.....

Perez shut the Astros out last year, if I recall. Let's hope for better tomorrow night.

I thought Diaz looked pretty good behind the dish, yesterday, though I have a very untrained eye when it comes to catchers.

Random thought, though. I don't think I care too much about how well a guy frames pitches. The umps should be able to tell a strike from a ball before it hits the glove. Obviously, that isn't the case 100% of the time, but I don't know if a low skill in framing matters too much.

Forrest Whitley after 2 outings:

.077 BA
.226 OBP
.192 SLG
.418 OPS

1.13 ERA
0.625 WHIP

12.4 K/9
3.4 BB/9
We've definitely had the luxury of patience with him while he develops...other clubs would have thrown him to wolves already and likely caused him to have confidence issues, maybe a blown arm by over-throwing...basically burning him out and then off to the trash heap.

I'm not saying he's going to be a stud but we've given him absolutely the best environment to become a regular starter in the bigs.

If the Astros cared a great deal about framing, we would have moved on from Maldonado.

He's ranked 39th, 28th, 51st, & 34th from '19-'22 in Catcher Framing Runs.

Well our lineup is likely somewhat different than we faced him last...

For those not following the other thread,
ABattJudd's nephew Brandon Bristo got called up by the Rays yesterday and just pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief against the Red Sox in his MLB debut today, striking out four and walking one.

He actually went 3 scoreless innings and got the save. Not bad for his MLB debut!

Impressive that we are so bad in non-conference and still not only make the Dance but reach the championship game each year.

It's still very early but not upset that if the Rays play a little better than 500 ball from here on out the best NY and Boston can do is a wild card spot.

what's interesting though...

if the Astros are going to have a nice record by the end of April...

let's say 16-12 (after 28 games in April)

they will have to do it vs. the Blue Jays, Braves, and Rays --- should be fun

It seems like we like to play good teams.

2022 vs playoff teams
4-0 Mets
5-1 Rays
5-2 Yanks
2-1 Phillies
12-7 Mariners
4-3 Guardians
1-2 Braves
2-4 Blue Jays
35-20 (63.6 winning % or a 103 win pace)

Plus 11-2 in the Postseason

We also started 2020, 2021 and 2022 with a 7-9 record..

I'd rather just sweep this series and take our chances on the year, but just to go ahead and pacify the cliff jumpers if we go 1-2 it's not all over yet.

That stretch last year of dominating the Mets and looking like clearly the better team against the Yankees despite the split was when it was clear this team had it.

I know it's not always feasible to get down there, but there seems to be a TON of this stuff at the team shop. I went to a game last week and they had a bunch of stock.
