I'm going to be honest though. If I'm an owner I find a way to pay him whether I will put others around him or not. The Japanese eyes he will draw and national media attention is worth it

The team that signs Ohtani will likely never win a title with him.

So if we signed him we wouldn't win?
The point being that the teams in that hunt are historically teams that don't get how build a team for a title, they just want $$ from the jerseys and merchandise and the uptick in attendance. And that's great for making money but not for winning titles.

Besides of which, he's an injury waiting to happen. It's a miracle that he's had back to back healthy seasons. And when he gets hurt, you're losing 2 players not 1. If he goes anywhere besides the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Angels, Padres, or Dodgers, I'd be really surprised. And last time I checked, those teams have one 60-game season title between them in the last 7 years.

I think the Angels will be in a huge quandary come trade deadline time. I think they'll be "close enough" to the playoffs to consider keeping Ohtani for the run. So....do they trade him for a huge haul of prospects for the future of the team? Or keep Ohtani and lose him to free agency and get nothing?

1. Acquire TV streaming rights on own service
2. Sign Ohtani for whatever he wants
3. Make more than youre paying him from Japanese subscribers

the Astros "win" Ohtani's free agency as long as he leaves the West division. That is the most important thing.

then the Astros really win his free agency if he leaves the American League. That would be awesome.

Ohtani turns 29 years old in July

That's a good point on the injury...he goes on the shelf and you're losing Justin Verlander and Jose Altuve*, and as we know from the start of this season, it hurts!

*He's a much better hitter than Altuve but didn't want to use Yordan as the example and since Altuve is already hurt it works better.

Well he's been in the West up to this point and he hasn't affected the Astros much at all.

I think we "win" as long as he goes to a team that is just in it for the revenue and not to a deep pockets team like NYY that will actually build around him and be the favorite to win the pennant.

IMO not a big deal if he stays in the division. Yeah it's going to suck to face him more often, but his contract is going to cripple any AL West team and takes them out of contention. I wouldn't be thrilled to see him go to the Dodgers or Mets, but at least he's out of the AL.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like as long as he doesn't go to the Yankees it's fine. Historically I'd add Boston in there but they are so far away now from where they have been.

Regarding Ohtani -- he will probably end up with the Mets. They have aging pitching with JV and Scherzer, plus Cohen will pay whatever because he DGAF.

It seems like the Dodgers positioned themselves under the cap this year to reset their tax and make a big play for Ohtani this offseason. That's my guess on where he ends up.

I agree the Dodgers are positioning themselves to make a run, but they are not under the tax. Bauer getting reinstated prevented that.

My worst case scenario is the Rangers personally. They aren't there but they aren't far off. You add another legit arm and his bat and things get much tighter. I still don't believe it's enough but it might be enough for wildcard and then anything can happen.

Plus I do not want that bandwagon in our State

While we are throwing out places he'll never end up, the Braves would be my worst-case scenario. Add him to Acuna, Riley, Albies, Strider, Harris, Olsen, & Muprhy for the next several years and they become our top competition for titles.

Does Atlanta have "**** you" money?

I don't see the draw there. It's insanely ****in hot in summer and not a major market

Ah just reread you post. Gotcha
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

TBH the Rangers are right there at the top for me behind only similar teams we play less often. The only negative would be having to face Ohtani more often, but even that number would be less with the new schedule format.

They are already locked into enough bad long-term deals that he's not going to save them.

Major markets are NY, LA, Chicago...at least thats how I always view it.

I suppose that's fair, followed by DFW, Philly, Houston and Atlanta in the next group.

yes, and that one was fairly easy to predict.

the Yankees are paying him for what he did for the Marlins...which is usually a mistake.

Stanton is making a cool $32 MM in 2023, 2024, and 2025...then his contract eases

Probably add Boston and SF to NY, LA and Chicago before you get to your list. At least in terms of TV/media markets

those were the next two on the list (actually below the ones I listed per the site I found)

I'll be shocked if he doesn't sign with the Dodgers.

They attempted to reset the luxury tax the year before his FA (edited for post supra), they routinely spend well over the tax, they win, and are on the West Coast.

I don't think they have. Fangraphs has them at 245 M this year.

Isn't that the case with any FA contract?
