Day baseball and afternoon clear of meetings >>>>>>

Got a great story to share from ghostwriting a book with a couple of guys who played in the minors.

Guy has finished JUCO and gets a call from an Independent league team in Florida saying they need a pitcher the next day. So he packs and drives over there, they've got a game that next afternoon. He doesn't know a single person and they're all out taking BP when he gets there.

The coach of the team is Bernie Carbo, who played for the Reds and Red Sox in the 70s and ROY runner-up in 1970s. Before the game, the coach has a team meeting. Apparently, the night before there had been some real bad blood between the two teams, lots of guys getting thrown at, but the umpires hadn't given any warnings out.

Carbo had met with them before the next day's game and asked them to declare warnings before the game but they wouldn't, so he tells his team's starting pitcher, "I want you to throw at every guy that comes up until they issue a warning."

So the starter throws the first pitch 10 feet behind the batter and the warning gets issued and the first batter and the catcher almost get into a fight but they manage to calm it down. Carbo comes up to my guy in the 7th and says, "Hey, are you any good? You're going to pitch the ninth."

He's nervous as hell and walks the first guy and goes 2-0 on the second before Carbo comes out and say settle down, stop throwing fastballs, throw your slider. He gets 2 outs on the slider, but the next guy hits a 2-run oppo-field HR. Now my guy is thinking he's going to get cut.

The next guy up is crowding the plate so he throws a ball 1 slider, then tries to back him off the plate with a fastball, but loses control and pegs the guy in the middle of the back. he knows its' wild when he throws it and he looks down in disgust. When he looks back up, the batter is halfway to the mound racing at him with his helmet cocked like he's going to use it as weapon.

My guy crouches and flips this guy and starts punching him and both teams come spilling out and it turns into a massive brawl. My guy gets fined $100 and suspended for 3 games. But the guy who he hit was the starting pitcher the night before who had started the bad blood, so my guy's new teammates now think he's a hero and threw at him on purpose and pay his fee.

Meanwhile his team's starting pitcher had gone to take a shower after he was pulled, put on street clothes and went up to watch the game in the stands with his girlfriend. He ran out onto the field when the brawl started, and got a 20-game suspension. Since the season had fewer than 20 games left, the team cut him, and my guy took his place in the rotation.
