Verlander may not want to come here. His knowledge of the Dusty should be well known.
I want Dylan Cease. JV was great for us, but it's a mistake going after him now. This is a Tim Purpura kind of move.

Feels all kind of wrong parting with real assets for a guy Crane didn't want to pay less than a year ago. Yes, aware that was before the injuries and recent staff struggles.

That would be one hell of a pivot.

About 8 games back of prior best years. Amazing it's that close considering all the injuries and Dufus filling out the lineup card.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Between Garcia, Urquidy, LMJ and the various position player fill ins, we've probably lost 6-7 WAR just to health this year. Not playing Diaz enough/over Maldy is a couple more wins, as well... (Although, the emergence of France is a positive silver lining)

I'm out on Verlander. Cost us too high.

Agree, a top hitting and pitching prospect plus absorbing a hefty chunk of the salary is too much.

I wouldn't fault Dana for not making a splash but doing a deal or two that help us this year but really pay off next year. I would hate to overpay in 23 and affect our chances in 24. Probably an unpopular opinion.

Sounds like the price is too high for JV. The Dodgers are chasing the Braves just to get to a WS. They have more to give and seems like more incentive to give it. I hope we pick up another BP piece (Bednar?) and a bat. An extra 3/4 SP would be a bonus. Really hope Dana doesn't go ape **** and way overpay for JV.

Gilbert+Arhagetti (sp?) for an aging JV? Hell no.

Gilbert and Brown would be my guess. Plus a lot of cash for the contract.

Even if we throw in Montero to make the money work, that's still a tough pill to swallow.

Repeating as WS champs would be quite the legacy, might be where Crane's head is at today.

And/or just making it to the WS so little brother doesn't.

Everything I've been told leads me to believe that we'll pay less assets and more of his contract. Unless something has changed of course. Nothing new to report this morning.

i'm worried we are going to loss Chas in this deal, that's a price to high imo

To be fair, the Astros do not need to make the WS this year to secure some kind of legacy. Our 6 year run, that's still going as we speak, is a legacy in itself.

Having said that, I don't care what TX, TB, etc. are doing so far this season…the AL runs through the Astros and every single team knows it. Until somebody knocks us out, we're the absolute favorites IMO.

I much prefer that - although interesting that Crane is willing to pay that now rather than in the off-season. I know we know about injuries now and the talent of other teams, but just interesting

Do not want to give up Chas.

When does the lineup get set? That may be very revealing today.

lineup usually comes out about 4 hours before the game, but if there's questions, it can be delayed by a lot more.

My concern is that the team gets so hyperfocused on getting JV and only JV that they pass up other deals that could help them and then he goes elsewhere or stays in NY.

Crane is the only one involved in the JV negotiations. Dana Brown is working on other areas, but Crane is the only one handling the JV side.

As of late Monday night, multiple teams were in the mix for the three-time Cy Young Award winner. The Astros, believed to be Verlander's preferred choice, were one. The Dodgers, though seemingly discouraged by their chances, were another. The Orioles were on the periphery, staying in touch with the Mets, and other clubs possibly were involved.
The key questions were these:
Would Verlander waive his no-trade clause for a team other than the Astros, for whom he played from late 2017 to '22?
Would the Mets be willing to deal him to the Astros when other teams have better prospects to offer?
How much would the risk of injury to Verlander compel the Mets to make another version of the Max Scherzer deal, in which they included approximately $36 million to land a top 100 prospect from the Rangers, infielder Luisangel Acuña?
The Dodgers, if they fail to land Verlander, figure to push for another starter in addition to Lance Lynn. Their 6.18 starters' ERA in July is the second-worst in any month for the club since earned runs became official in 1912, and their worst since coming to Los Angeles.
Quote:

The Yankees, sitting in last place, 10 games out of first, with a 10-15 record in July, might not be worthy of additional investment. They could finally add a left fielder. But they also are open to moving potential free agents such as outfielder Harrison Bader and utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa, as first reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

So if the 35 million vesting option is the biggest problem, and JV still wants to compete for a championship, could we not renegotiate that deal with JV and convince him to take a Bobby Bonilla type deal... get paid 2 million over the next 15 years kinda thing.

I hate that the Mets are getting anything for Max and JV...it's like that scene from Succession and Logan Roy:
Congratulations Cohen on saying the biggest number, you f***ing moron!

It really isn't fair that a team gets to benefit when their owner spends like a drunken sailor. I'm sure he'll do it again with Ohtani in the off-season and when the Mets are 20 games back he'll see what he can get again. Rinse and repeat.
