Amazing how baseball had all these problems for a century and a half that MLB finally got around to correcting.

I am starting to realize that there's a lot of people who think that three and a half hour games with batters stepping out of the batters box after every pitch to adjust their batting gloves while the pitcher strolls around the mound has been the norm over baseball's history and these new rules are altering the purity of the game.

Hmmm…

As much as we rag on Chandler he's right. Breggy is going to command big years and money to stay

What can we do to get Chandler Rome traded to another beat?

Haven't read the article, but I agree. If we say Bregman is 80% of Machado when he hits FA at a similar age, he's looking at 9/280. I can't see us even considering that for him and I wouldn't blame Crane/Brown for that at all.

I'd be 100% okay with giving it to him

Bregman can take that money from the Rangers. I will even help him pack for the torpedo job his contract will do for our rivals.

I'm at 8/240 max maybe maybe 9 if they do it now and lower the total maybe like 9/252

The time to give out the mega deal should have been a Correa assuming no issue with the ankle. Paying someone 27-35 makes sense. Paying them for 30-38 doesn't. If we're giving out a mega deal now, it should be to extend Tucker, not Bregman IMO. Add on 6 to Tucker and it takes him into the mid 30s.

No offense we don't have an obvious next man up for 3B. We have 3 in the OF; Leon, Gilbert and Melton

Can also throw in Dirden and Barber

Whittaker is the only possibility I've heard about as a Bregman replacement.

Also maybe Leon is a potential Altuve replacement in a few years but I'm not sure timing will work out for that one, hopefully Jose outplays that as an option

Edit to add: the mega deal for Carlos was never going to happen. Pena has made that blatantly obvious in my opinion. The Astros saw no value in paying Correa that money when they had a replacement

Fair point. But there are ways to replace him. Maybe we use a first round pick on someone like Braden Taylor who moves thru the system quickly like Bregman did. We could probably get someone like Chapman for half the money Bregman's market value will be. Hensley has played everywhere in the INF. He might turn out to be pretty dang good. I don't think you spend bad money because you failed to develop behind a player.

All those OFers you listed aren't going to hit. We're going to need a LFer one Brantley moves on and potentially a platoon with Chas if he doesn't take the next step vs RHP.

Edit: I don't disagree on Correa/Pena. Just the logic that mega deals should goto guys in their 20s.

I don't think anyone was 100% sure about Peña .

They offered Correa what ended up being almost fair market value.

I guess personally I don't view it as bad money when it's 8 yrs at 28 per…which is what I said.

That won't be as insane by the time the contract is ending and we can not last forever with never securing veterans. Championships will never be won continually long term by trying on youth to constantly produce and constantly replenish

Ripping up 2 years on his current deal would be much better. That's only 6 additional years. I doubt he's interested in that when guys are getting 11 when their a couple of years older.

If we could just get Peña into the weight room, maybe he could slide over to 3B and replace Bregman

"34 days until Opening Day and you know what that means. The Ryan Express."

Is it true that the greatest players to have ever played for the Astros, Rockets and Oilers all wore no. 34?

Maybe the most popular at one time, but you can no longer call Nolan the greatest astro ever. He might not be top 10 at this point. But Dream for sure and Earl probably yes unless you want to go with Bruce Matthew's.

I didn't read the entire article but skimmed most. My only opinion is this **** is now writing a book showing it wasn't just us….but wouldn't even mention that when the whole story broke.

Correct, but the disclaimer would be he said "greatest player"

Not necessarily "greatest Astro"

And I'm firmly in the Altuve as greatest Astro camp

Nolan wouldn't be anywhere close to my top Astro ever. Bidge, Bags, Altuve, Cesar Cedeno and I think if he stays his career here Yordan could eclipse all of them. And those are just hitters.

Dream is obviously far and away the top Rocket.

A top Oiler would be hard. Earl and Dr. Doom early were my favorites.

Greatest player? Nolan and Dream would be the top 2.

Warren Moon is a piece of **** and was a mediocre quarterback. Fight me.

He was an adulterer but that sadly doesn't differentiate him from most pro athletes.

speaking of Pena...if he has a great 2023 season...

he could become the priority for a mega-deal / extension over Bregman.

give it to the younger guy

I agree.

Nolan is an MLB all-time great...but his greatness (and stats) is spread among 4 teams.

Mike Scott's 9 years with the Astros was arguably greater than Nolan's 9 years.

same for J.R. Richard. Same for Roy Oswalt.

the Astros have had a lot of great starting pitchers
