The pitch clock as-is is straight trash. A game should not end that way. Imagine paying to watch a game end like that. You want more fans Rob? Don't implement stupid **** like this.

Before there was JV, there was Joe Sambito, who wore the # from 1976-1984 and was the Astros' first really great closer.
Hey, let's no forget about this guy! He had pretty impressive career hitting stats as well. And I'm guessing you know that.

Not knowing the years of service/arbitration schedule at all, that seems very reasonable. Someone will back their way into a great value if he's willing to sign that with whoever he's dealt to.

So day one of spring training was kind of the best thing ever. Got to watch all the starters doing drills and BP for a couple hours. My kids got stuff signed by Yordon, Bregman, Altuve, and Bagwell (my wife jumped in that line too).

After that we wondered to the back practice fields where all the young guys were. No crowds or security so you are basically just walking by the players. This guy is walking past us and is like "hey kid" (to my 11 year old) "do you want my bat?" . As you can imagine, my son said yes, so we've got an official Shay Whitcomb bat now.

Got into the stadium and got a picture with the World Series trophy.

Game was good, although it was mostly just the Mets ****ing up, but the stadium was cool.

I know I'm in the minority here, wanting baseball games to be played in less than half a day. But for those who think that status quo is good, can you please answer this question: do you have no concern about the future of the game you love with the video game generation? I know young people that don't use email because it's too slow. In my life I've seen baseball fall from a strong second among the most popular sport in America to now third.

And does anyone really think a playoff game will be decided by the pitch clock? You don't think that pitchers and batters won't adjust by then? I'm guessing by May we won't hear anything more about it.

I'm going to like the quicker games, but I don't like that it had to be legislated

My thought is that a baseball game is 9 innings and it takes 6 outs per inning.

Guess what...That takes a while.

If you don't like that then maybe baseball is not for you.

Well, like it or not games are going to be shorter because the people in charge realize that they need to be. Hope you can adapt.

They need to be according to whom? Average MLB game length is just over 3 hours. That's how long NFL games are. No one complains those are too long.

Extra innings, obviously, change the equation. I can't find data on how often games go to extras.

No I'm not worried about it at all. Kids that enjoy baseball and want to play and are capable of playing…..still play baseball.

So the sport isn't going anywhere. Guess what, kids don't watch full college/pro football games either until they get older. Kids also watch less NBA because the stars are c*nts and play in half the games and the season is longer than baseball.

Sports on tv is for middle aged men, those men don't care if it's 10-20 min shorter. It's their release, their down time. Say what you want but baseball on tv isn't ever going to be watch by youthes.

The sport has already gone somewhere. Look at the trends shown by this gallup poll.

Baseball's decline

From your user name I'm guessing you grow up with 3 hour plus baseball games and might think that's the norm. I became a fan in the late 60s when games lasting under two and a half hours were common. Look at what's happened to baseball's popularity since then.

Are you trying to attribute the decline in popularity to mainly the length of a game? Surely not, right?

I would say it's the pace of the game. At least that's one factor. Why do you think baseball's popularity has fallen in relation to football or basketball?

We all have friends who don't like baseball. For me, when I ask them why they don't the answer is invariably that it's too slow.

And if you're a baseball fan how can this trend not be a concern?

I think it has much more to do with growth of others than there being something inherently wrong with baseball. Look at how football and basketball were played in the 40s vs how it's played now.

In general, I do agree the pace has slowed too much. I wish a firm clock wouldn't need to be the answer. Ultimately, this is just 1 minor to medium sized issue. Not some boat anchor bringing the game down to its death.

For me it's not the pace of the game during ABs. There are lots of places they can shave time.

Guys coming out of the pen are warm. They don't need 7 tosses.

Managers don't need to come to the mound and wait on the ump to walk out to the mound to force them to make a pitching change.

We don't need God Bless America and a 7th inning stretch. Scrap the cotton eyed Joe in the 7th.

Pitchers never have to bat or run bases. There is no reason ever for them to not be out and warming up immediately.

You want to be really radical? The game never goes to extra innings. A tie is now real. That gives the home team a real advantage in B9.

Of course I'm half in the bottle tonight so I may be crazy.

Every city with a baseball and basketball team gets better viewership in baseball with 1 or 2 exceptions

My first reaction to this was YEAH, what a great idea. Then reality dawned on me, you're talking about cutting out commercials between innings.

I think it's more about all of the dead space in between the playing of the game than it is the pace of the game itself.

It certainly wouldn't be worth the countless times you have to come up with an answer of "that's his signature I guess" to the question of "why is there a "42" in the middle of the 3."

But seriously...I guess if I squint real hard I can make out a "P" for Pena but that leaves an "L." Is an L a Spanish J? Are we supposed to pronounce his name Leremy Pena?

I'm confused. Of course cursive hasn't been taught for a while in schools so we'll likely continue to get neanderthal "signatures."
