Was enjoying the prep work for my colonoscopy last night and recorded/watched a show on MLB Network about the 1986 Championship series. It was from 2013 and I'd never seen it before. For the Astros/Mets part, they had Bob Costas and another guy talking to Billy Hatcher and Doc Gooden in person, with video recorded clips of several others, including a hilarious Mike Scott interview in which he repeatedly said he had never scuffed a ball, but maybe he had thrown a scuffed ball.

The ALCS part was good too, with Gary Pettis, Bruce Hurts, Dwight Evans, and Calvin Schiraldi in studio.

Facts

But they have some legit depth. Cole, Rodon, Nestor, and Sevy is a nice 1-4 punch.

It's a good rotation, top 10 no doubt, but no one in that rotation is truly scary.

Their rotation is solid, but their offense outside of judge is average at best.

I dislike Cole, but he's easily one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball over the last 5 years. In a down year, he came in 9th for the 2022 CYA. Top 5 four straight years before that.

If he's not "scary", then that list must be pretty short.

He's a dewsh, but he'd be the best pitcher on about 25 others teams.

Hard to believe but he was the 34th ranked SP by fWAR last year. Behind Javier who pitched 50 fewer innings. He's still very good but not an ace on a team that's trying to win the WS.

Gerrit Cole is an ace. And that isn't even really debatable.

But their BP is mediocre and their offense has an awful approach. That's not even taking into account what they'll do without the Goldilocks balls.

On paper they haven't made up any ground on us.
Deluxe

A low tier ace, yea. I said he's not an ace for a team trying to win the World Series. That's not really debatable based on his recent production.

I agree with your other point tho. They have too many bats that are easy outs in October.

It's a move that they had to make.

But it's not like it's an oh **** move like they just signed JV, Degrom or Ohtani

In modern day baseball, sure you can go spend a fortune on starters, but you aren't going to win **** if you bullpen sucks arse. These guys are pulled anywhere between 4-2/3 and 5-2/3 innings so you better build up the pen.

I'm not hating on Cole. He's good, but the Astros can hit him. Yordan and Abreu have OPS over 1.000 against him.
Farmer1906

Altuve, Bregman, & Tucker don't have 1.000 OPS added together.

Don't overreact to a tiny sample size. Cole is good. He was super elite in 18 and 19. He's taken a step back with NY, but he's still in the upper echelon.

Cole doctors the ball, that's very clearly why he was dominant in 18/-9, he won't get back there without new tricks. He is 3519 with the yanks that's a .648 winning percentage as an "Ace" which is less than the Astros team 2022 winning percentage

He is probably getting substantial leeway in New York on the doctoring as well

It apparently was originally a 2-hour special called 1986: A Postseason to Remember, but what I watched was broken down into two different shows. The first was all about the WS and the second was all about the LCSs.

It's the 34th anniversary of the darkest day in Astros history.

The day the team signed Jim Clancy to replace Nolan Ryan.

The team earlier lost Nolan Ryan to the Rangers by offering him $1.3 million per year for 2 years. The Rangers offered $1.8 million for the first year and $1 million plus incentives for the second. The Astros declined to match, then signed Clancy for 2 years, $2.375 million. This for a pitcher who had gone 11-13 with a 4.49 ERA the year before.

Clancy roared out of the gate with an opening-week win for the Astros on April 8. His next victory came on May 26. On June 16, he pitched 6-2/3 innings of shutout ball to get to 5-4 with a 3.57 ERA. Then he lost 10 of his final 12 decisions. He was really great in September, losing to the Padres 9-0 and the Giants 10-2. For the season, he went 7-14 with a 5.08 ERA. Meanwhile, old man Nolan struggled to a 16-10 record with a 3.20 ERA and 301 strikeouts, which led the majors. That was at age 42 by the way. Did I mention the Astros finished 6 games out of first that year? With Clancy at 7-14 while Nolan went 16-10. Just thought I'd mention that.

The Astros started off 1990 with Clancy in the bullpen. Because when you suck ass for 162 games, you get made into the fifth starter / long reliever. on April 21, he got his first start of the season at Dodger Stadium and gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits in 4 innings.
Two starts later, he gave up 10 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 innings to the Phillies. He started just twice more in May,

By June, when the Astros started to notice they collectively sucked, they turned Clancy loose to start some games. He made it past the 5th inning once in five starts, 4 of them losses. That sent him back to the bullpen and he finished the year with a sterling 2-8 record with 1 save and a 6.51 ERA. Meanwhile, Old Man Ryan went 13-9 with a 3.44 ERA, again led the league in strikeouts with 232, and also pitched his 6th no-hitter.

1991 was Clancy's coup de grace, the Astros completely stopped letting him start games, and he sucked not as much to the point where he got traded to the Braves for future Astro legends Matt Turner, who never played for the Astros, and Earl Sanders, who pitched 1 game in AA Jackson in 1992 and was released.

Clancy meanwhile, went on to win the NLCS with the Braves and play in the World Series. Meanwhile, Old Man Ryan, now 44, went 12-6 with the Rangers with a 2.91 ERA and pitched his 7th no-hitter and reached 5,000 strikeouts.

The silver lining of this tale of woe is that during the 1989 season, I got to hear my dad say the F-word in public when he stood up during a conference on the mound at the Dome and screamed "HEY CLANCY YOU ****ING SUCK!!!" Many cheers were given to my dad from our section and the police officer by the Astros dugout started laughing.

So like, losing Anthony Hill to the sips wasn't enough, so you wanted me to relive losing Nolan to the Rangers.

Thanks a lot!

National media still shlts on Houston and sucks off the NY and coastal teams. Color me surprised they are rooting for anything NY, especially when it comes to Houston. **** those chodes.

I'll also bet you there will be multiple teams that still get in national TV more than HOU does. What are the stats on that over the past few years, anyway?

Blum has been with the team for over 10 years now. He is a fan favorite and I do not see him or Kalas going anywhere. I *hope* that this is them working on a longer than a one year deal that they got last year.

Remember 2020? The Yankees added Cole. We lost Cole, Miley, Verlander, and most of our bullpen. Greinke was a shell of his old self. We basically spent the entire season holding pitcher tryouts. And we still made it further than them in the playoffs.

It's a respect thing. If any team has earned respect, it's the Astros. Yet it's the national media that has purposefully crapped on the Astros accomplishments and propped up teams like the NYY.

What's the matter? You don't want 162 games of Kevin Eschenfelder and Mike Stanton?
