I started writing my top 10, and then realized I had another idea for a topic. Who are the top 5 Astros you had the most hope/excitement for when they first got on the team? Here's my top 5, largely influenced by being born in 1985:

1. Roy Oswalt
2. Yordan
3. Daryl Ward
4. Hunter Pence
5. Brad Lidge

I was in the stands for Oswalt's first start. Even in the nosebleeds it was obvious how much he controlled the mound. He's probably still my favorite Astros pitcher.
  • Eric Anthony
  • Drabek & Swindell when Drayton signed both for the '93 season
  • James Mouton and his bad-ass MLB debut going 3 for 5 with a run scored and a steal on opening day of 94.
  • Nolan Ryan
  • Randy Johnson - went to his home debut, electrifying, and he got a hit!

I'm glad somebody else remembers Eric Anthony. I thought he was going to be a star.

Who should get the money then? Just more to the owners?
Here's a crazy idea - pass it along to the consumer? One of the reasons I tapped out of my season tickets years ago wasn't just the increasing cost of tickets, it's all the other stuff (beer, dog, parking) associated in going to the game. I love going to the ballpark and catching a game - it shouldn't have to be a "special occassion" type of cost to do so with the family.

Everyone one of these contracts that get signed . . . just think of that as an extra quarter on top of that already ridiculously priced beer.

This. At some point there is going to be push back and the players/owners have to know this.

I was all in for Drabek and Swindell, too. The results seriously bummed me out. Especially Drabek. I got to interview Swindell at the Astros Caravan stop at Tom's in 1993. He didn't seem to be excited to be there.

I also went to Unit's first home start (that was also Wagner's first game back after taking that line drive). The Dome was crazy that night, my friends.

Another guy I had high hopes for was Javier Ortiz after he was called up and went on a tear. I have no idea what happened after that.

Listening to baseball is dead and they're discussing JV & deGrom.

Who do you think has a better 2023 & 2024?

Both healthy, the answer is deGrom IMO. Based on recent history, the answer is JV. I could see arguments from either, but gun to my head, I think my pick is deGrom.
I agree and also deGrom should have an easier schedule facing the AL West (minus us of course) but the Rangers bully could blow a lot of potential wins for him too.

It really depends on how the Mets handle him, they are doing work on the bull pen and currently have 6 or so starting capable pitchers (Sherzer, Verlander, Quintinnia, Carrasco, MeGill, and Peterson) They also have Luchesi but he has worn his welcome out. Rumor is the Mets are still going after the Japanese Pitcher so that would probably move Peterson or MeGill (or both) to the pen to fill the Lugo role. So it seems like the Mets are going for quality and depth to keep the rotation fresh if that is the case then I say JV.

DeGrom has been one of my favorite pitchers but looking at the Ranger's pen they will lean heavy on the rotation, and down the stretch for the Mets DeGrom got shelled in several games and pushed his ERA north of 3.00 for only the second time in his career. DeGrom had three straight years he pitched in over 200 innings (2017 to 2019), since then he has not pitched more than 92 innings in a season (granted one was plague year). Personally I hope he gets back to his old form but I fear that the trend continues as Bochy let's his starters work and that can lead to DeGrom getting worn down quickly. Hope I am wrong as two competitive teams in Texas would be exciting. That and I am a Mets and Giants fan so I want to see Boch and DeGrom succeed

perhaps the balance to the big spending teams...is the expanded playoffs.

especially those 3-game series.

a team from the AL or NL Central...or a modest spending #6 seed...can foil the plans of the big spenders.

see last year's 101-win Mets

Listening to Ballpark Dimensions and the brought up a crazy point on Bogaerts.

He's kind of a Fenway special. Not that he'll be bad, but he will probably be a disappointment for that contract.

Career SLG / wRC+ - home vs away
.497 / 129 vs .420 / 107

2022 SLG / wRC+ - home vs away
.504 / 141 vs .407 / 126

21-22 spray chart (hits with LA 10+)

That yellow area is a bunch of hits that won't be hits in SD.

Kinda surprised no one has really nibbled at JD Martinez yet. I know he has his health is a red flag and his K rate is absurd but he's still a good bat capable of doing some damage.

Seeing Matt Carpenter on there makes me LOL now that all this goldilocks balls info came out.

Which makes me wonder about some of the other Yankee hitters like Bader who had outlier performances with the Yankees.

So not only did the Yankees have their own strike zone at Yankee Stadium they had their own juiced baseballs to hit.

And they still couldn't win.

And they've added exactly 0 players to help them beat the Astros (or win one game in a series).

This could be awkward

Quote:

The Yankees could be preparing to spoil another of the Giants' free-agent pursuits. Despite having re-signed Aaron Judge to a nine year, $360 million contract, New York does not appear to be closing for business.

In an appearance on 95.7 The Game's Willard and Dibs, ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the Yankees could be working on "something big" -- possibly a deal that would bring Correa to the Bronx.

If they didn't do it last year, why would they this year? I don't think they get Rodon either. The OQ = 2 picks for teams in the tax. I think they go after a left fielder and maybe 1 more pitcher. Maybe make a trade.

Will Carlos just stand by and watch every time the garbage NY fans yell F Altuve - even when not playing the Astros? I'd love CC to snap back at them.
