JV was such a workhorse that I'd find it very hard to trade SP talent. He gave you 29+ games last year and pitched 6 innings, or more, in like 22 of those games. We have depth but it's not going to replace what he brought every start.

2nd offseason Houston sporting event for Pena & Hensley. With the McCullers/Correa & Tucker/Straw separations, we needed a new team bromance.
The other pitching thing to consider is Javier, LMJ, Garcia not Urquidy are guys you pencil in for 6-7 innings per start. They are 5, maybe 6 innings typically. That gives you 1 horse in Framber and a little unknown in Brown. The 6 man rotation will be key I believe.
McCullers went 6 or more in 5/8 starts. 17/28 in 2021.
Javier went 6 or more in 11/25 starts.
Garcia 14/28

When healthy, it looks like Lance is best equipped to give you 6.

IIRC Javier was kept on a pretty strict pitch limit of around 90 per game. With his high K stuff getting through 6 made for a tough thing.
Went back and looked at all the Cy Young winners since 2010. For whatever reason, seems like in that timespan, the NL winners did a better job of bouncing back after their Cy Young winning season. Seems less common for AL pitchers in recent years to match their performance the year after winning. Wonder if the DH has something to do with that vs having an automatic out in the lineup in the NL for the pitcher. Anyway, here's the info:

Yes but he also missed the previous two seasons. It's hard to know what will happen vs. what is just an outlier season.
We shouldn't expect JV to repeat last year for the duration of the contract he signs. Expecting that for 3 years is pretty hard to believe. If he does it, then obviously it's a legendary stretch of performance for a pitcher not too dissimilar from Nolan before he got injured.
The Athletics appear to be getting close to a trade of C Sean Murphy, per source. The Braves are considered the frontrunners to acquire the former Gold Glove winner, though other teams remain in the mix.

Will six man rotations start to become more of a norm? Look how many high profile pitchers have broken down in post season the past couple of years. Kershaw and Scherzer last year, as well as LMJ. Then Scherzer again this year. Maybe it seemed like Urquidy was wasted once the playoffs started but was he part of the reason we had all healthy starters by then?MosesHallRAB04 said:

Urquidy wasn't a waste at all...he gave us 3 strong innings when LMJ didn't have it and was the main reason Dusty didn't have to fire the Montero, Abreu, and Pressly bullets that night. Update on Sean Murphy: it still appears Oakland is close to a trade, but the Braves are NOT going to be the acquiring team, per source. The Cardinals, Rays, Guardians and Red Sox are among the teams that have been connected to Murphy in recent weeks.

Anyone ever done spring training? We were thinking about it last year as a Christmas present for the kids, but with the labor deal I didn't end up looking into too long and we did a different trip.
This year I think we will head down for a long weekend. Any tips? At least in my mind, the coolest part would be just hanging out while the players are practicing/working out/coming and going. I'm sure we'll time it up to see a couple of games but I assume the stars don't play much?

I went in 2015 with my son. It was great as we watched a game between the Astros top prospects and the Mets' top prospects on a back field. It was like standing by the bleachers at a high school game, except I was standing next to Cesar Cedeno. I've heard that since the Astros have 'arrived', the players are roped off more than they used to be. It was also a little spooky have many adults were there hunting autographs.

I went to a spring training game many years ago in Kissimmee when we were at Disney for Spring Break. The only thing I remember was that Billy Wagner worked and at that time they thought he may be a possible starter for the team.
The special Contemporaries Committee for the Baseball HOF announced tonight that Fred McGriff was a unanimous selection. No one else made it. You needed 75% of the vote. Mattingly got 50%, Shilling 43%, and it went down from there. All they said about Bonds, Clemens, Palmiero was they got less than 25%.

But.....if JV and Montero and Abreu cost you signing Tucker, figuring out Bregman or Framber/Javier in a year or two or taking a fair shot at a healthy Brantley, it is my opinion that these were bad decisions.....I have less of a problem with Abreu....I think you spent maybe $4-$5 million too much and pushed it on the 3rd year.
If the pie is just ballooning.....the Astros should have been in the running for DeGrom....maybe they were.
Update that I am sure has been covered.......Brian Reynolds with Pittsburgh has requested a trade......it's time for GM's Crane and Bagwell to make a run. Pirate management does drink heavily on some days (that would at least be an explanation)....but they don't drink heavily every day....they should be treated like receivers of email advertising.......you need to contact them every day.....or maybe even twice a day.

I think he could be an option. He's an outfielder and catcher.
Not Contreras, but he is much younger. His stats in MLB so far don't wow me, but his potential does.

He's such a random player. Plays fantastic defensive OF yet can catch too. He doesn't hit it hard. Whiffs too much. Doesn't make enough contact. But when he does time it up be hits homers. High barrel rate.

Absolutely. I think he could be a nice project since he is so young. He likely could really benefit from some guys like the Astros who have experience and don't strikeout a bunch.

A few comments- happy to talk direct if you'd like:
Pick a game(s) when the team is playing in West Palm so you get the most exposure to the players.
Get there before the gates open and hit the practice areas. Long lines so show up early.
Players respond to kids first, then women.
Know something personal about them. Mrs. Marvin always says or asks something about their kids, wives, charities, something that gets them to engage. Just yelling gimme an autograph doesn't get their attention.
I usually go straight to the outfield berm and shag balls during batting practice. DON'T be one of those dudes that takes balls away from kids, though!
Stick around afterwards and you'll see more activity.
Starters don't play much the first week. They may not even be in the dugout.
Mrs. Marvin likes to stick around the practice areas during the games. Sometimes boring, but sometimes you get five minutes with a Correa or Reddick. Just never know.
Be flexible and have alternate plans in case the weather is bad.
Check the schedule and see when the Astros travel locally. Are they still doing the pod thing like during COVID? A trip to Jupiter or Port St. Lucie is no big deal, but the west side of teams is a long day trip. Plan accordingly.
Spring training is the best baseball experience ever!!! You will have a blast. Enjoy!
