Nah they sold the LA house and live in south Florida now

If the Contreras plan is to mostly play him LF/DH along with some occasional backup C duties, I'd rather just re-sign Brantley.

If the Contreras plan is for him to play a little LF/DH while we gradually transition Maldy's duties to him this year and then be our full time C going forward, sign me up.

I was a little sour on trading for him at the deadline because 1) I didn't want to give up good assets for a rental, 2) it was questionable how quick he could learn our staff and 3) I didn't think we'd be able to retain him after the season.

Now that we've shown we're willing to spend and he'll have a full spring + season to learn our staff before the stretch run, I'm much more on board.

I wonder how much our revamped front office values the 2nd round pick we'd have to give up to sign him.

Anyone see anything about where Mancini and Vasquez might be signing? Really liked those 2 and will pull for them other than against us that is.

I don't think it matters how the front office feels about the second pick. I think it matters how Jim Crane feels about it. If he wants Contreras, he's shown what he's willing to do to those in the front office who don't get who he wants.

Haven't seen much on either. Highly doubt Mancini will be back now that we've signed Abreu.

I've always been a fan of retaining Vazquez. In terms of bang for buck, I'd rather re-sign him than commit $80 million+ to Contreras. But I'm not going to lose much sleep over whatever we decide to do at C this offseason.

At this point, when I say "front office", I'm including Crane.

100% agree.

Contreras is a great hitter for a catcher. He may improve slightly without worrying about catching duties. Over the last 3 seasons, his wRC+ is 119 (110, 111, 132). That's good, but that's similar to someone like Ian Happ or Anthony Rizzo. So I don't want to pay him like an elite catcher. If we want him to be a LF/DH with emergency catcher duties then he's not worth the 4/80 or whatever the rumored amount would be.

I wouldn't mind a catching split to look something like this:
  • Maldy - LMJ, Framber, Garcia (every other start) - 68 starts
  • Lee/Diaz (pick 1) - Brown, Urquidy - 54 starts
  • Contreras - Javier, Garica (every other start) - 40 starts

Then Contreras can play another 45 games in LF and 45 games at DH. Lee or Diaz get proper development. Maldy isn't overworked so maybe he can be more productive at the plate. Win-win-win.

I think both are going to have to wait until other dominoes fall. Whoever signs Mancini is a club that probably missed out on Rizzo, Abreu, Bell, & Belt.

Sign me up. Then next year, we roll Contreras with Framber, LMJ, Garcia and Javier. Diaz/Lee keep Brown and Urquidy.

Prediction.
Crane is going to overspend for JV. It's not my money so I'll take it. And being aggressive with Abreu, possibly Contreras and even Brantley gives him shade that it didn't sacrifice bats to keep him. He does not want to be John McMullen giving away Nolan pt 2

The difference is that JV can walk away and the Astros dynasty is going to keep rolling along. The '89-'93 Astros sucked. No one cares that Springer, Correa, Kuechel, Cole, Morton, etc are gone because we keep winning. JV will be no different.

Is Yanier Diaz time with the organization numbered?

Should we be looking to trade him while his value is high? Seems like his openings with the big club is limited with Abreu addition

I'm with you 100%.

I was watching a thing about the USMNT '98 collapse (spoiler alert: Team captain John Harkes was boning best friend and teammate Eric Wynalda's wife). The coach booted Harkes even after Wynalda told him not to and the team turned against the coach for doing so.

where is this available to watch?

If the Dodgers back up the Brinks truck for JV I think Crane will let him walk. We just paid Justin $91 million for just a single year of production. In hindsight we could have used that money elsewhere and perhaps we'd be celebrating our 3rd title (of course we'll never know).

I'd love to have him back but not for 3 years and $120 million or something ridiculous along those lines. Hopefully he lands in the NL although with LA I will be forced to hate him with a passion.

IMO Lee is the guy we should be looking to sell on. I don't think he's going to hit at the big league level. Diaz has more upside. I'd rather give him the reps behind the plate and see if he develops.

If we do acquire a catcher (ie Vazquez or Contreras), I think we should make the move this offseason.

Hadn't seen much on Mancini at all.

It's been the consensus that Vasquez would head to STL (and would be a perfect fit) now that Molina is retired.

I don't think Vazquez is interested in a backup job.
