this crossed my mind too.

ol' Dusty is going to slip Yuli in the starting lineup at first base.

perhaps more than occasionally
and the same bleeders will whine about "OMG!!! day off!! Pete Rose didn't take days off!!!!"

meanwhile, we win 100+ games again.

Let's see what Gilbert does in AA before we take that leap
I'm still shocked at what a bust Boomer was after winning SEC Player of the Year

Would rather give the youth a chance

Gilbert
Diaz

They are ready

Talk about picking a steep hill to die on. Blue star for the effort.

Now, you better ride Gilbert's jock like Lafitte Pincay until he rakes at MMP. Don't give up, keep tooting his horn, and you may get a blue parachute like Farmer did when his crush blossomed into TED.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

was not expecting a lot of Drew Gilbert talk this morning...

but okay it's the offseason
To be fair to Bag, he's had this take since at least after the all-star break. So, at least he's consistently wrong.

he is better than Chas, TODAY, full stop

I appreciate what Chas did for the astros this year, but pretending he is anything more than a AAAA player is bad business
Even if this was true, a AAAA player is still lightyears ahead of Gilbert right now in development.

Not trying to be a dick, but how long have you followed baseball? Are you familiar with how long it takes for prospects to develop? This isn't the NBA or NFL where guys get drafted and contribute right away.
Oh gawd, give me a break...

I am 49 and have followed baseball all my life, please stop with the self righteous nonsense.

Gilbert is 22 years old, he is not a young guy, a year older than the current AL ROY.

How long have you followed baseball?

What I am suggesting happens all the time, there is a guy on the Astros that followed a similar path, his name is Alex Bregman, have you heard of him?

I honestly can't tell if you're trolling but I sincerely hope you are.....

I mean.... everything I can say has already been said in this thread. I don't know how you can compare Bregman and Gilbert. Gilbert has had 32 ABs in the lowest levels of professional baseball. Bregman played 2.5 years in the farm system and his movement through the system was considered quick.

I love Gilbert. He's going to be a good player. He is not ready to be an every day big league player.

If that's the hill you choose to die on, that's fine and we can agree to disagree and be friends at the end of the day.

Since we are talking about players with a low chance of contributing in '23 (no offense, Bag), anyone have an update on Whitley? He'd have to improve just to reach Appel status at this point.

I was one of those bleeders but I promise I won't be in the future and I hope everyone who did complain will stop going forward. I also promise to call out any remaining bleeders who apparently didn't have time to watch the playoffs this past postseason or realize we won 100+ games.

We have established Bregman played a combined 1 full season in the minors (589 ABs) was draft in 2015 hit the show in 2016.

I am not saying Gilbert the second coming Lenny Dykstra, what I am saying is he is better than Chas, today, and I would rather let him grow into the position than spend a bunch of money on a FA CF

Boomer was an Aggie legend but was a 10th round draft pick, the writing was on the wall, Gilbert is a 1st round pick, apples and oranges imo

Just to be clear, you think if Gilbert played in the majors all year last year, or this year, he posts stats better than this:

AVG / OPS / OPS+ / WAR / WRC+
.245 / .739 / 110 / 2.0 / 114

I think there was something else going on with Boomer but maybe I never heard the full story. Something like after he was promoted to AA he was injured and then was asked to go back to A to rehab and he refused. Seemed like he didn't really have his heart all the way invested in a pro career. Is this right?

That's crazy. Are you seriously going to play around in the same financial ballpark as NYY, LAD, NYM? We're already beating them on the field. If we beat them off, then… oh baby!

That's why I mentioned yesterday about the Astros balance sheet with merchandise/concessions/attendance (especially added attendance with playoff games and the additional revenue associated with that).

Also I don't think we're a bloated organization like I suspect the NY/LA clubs are so I'd love to know what our profit margins have been the last 6 years (minus the Covid season). Perhaps Crane has stockpiled some funds for us to make hay while this window is open.
