I actually hate this. I think it's going to be an advantage for pitchers, especially if ABs go long. What can a batter do to try and get a pitcher out of his rhythm?

(cue farmer stats on spring training runs scored)

Can't a batter call time once in an AB?

And I guess technically the batter can step out as long as he's in at the 8 sec mark. This guy digs in at 14 sec so it's game on

Not sure if it's happened in the bigs or just college, but there have been some instances of the batter asking for time and not getting it.

Oh I'm wide awake on Melton and Barber. Daniels too. It's hard to find room for everyone when you grow them on trees.

I admit I'm not up on the new rules about the windup, but with no one on base is any delivery considered from the stretch?

an illegal pitch with no one on base is not a balk, its an automatic ball.

a "quick pitch" is illegal.

With bases empty it is not a balk. It is an illegal move by the pitcher and an automatic ball.

Your beef is with the umpire. Didn't look like the batter complained, though it's possible he doesn't even know he can? I wonder if this is one of the things MLB is going to try and get rid of, though. Didn't Nestor Cortes do this crap all the time?
