Can anyone guess that the Astros long-term plan is at CF (or is there plan simply to be very short term?)? Do we think they see Chaz or Jake as the long term future of CF? or is there a prospect that we forsee, in say 2024, that looks to cement that position for years to come? Or is a trade our only way to fill that role without a rotating door of players coming and going and/or platooning?
Right now Chas represents a top 10-15 CF that is under control for 4 more years on the cheap. He plays plus defense and has been above avg offensively. I can't speak for the Astros, but is there a good reason to not consider him the guy in CF? His emergence means we can put more funds towards upcoming FAs (Tuve, Bregman) and not need to burn prospect capital for a trade.
Adding some data.
Over the last 2 years, Chas is ahead of other CFers in wRC+ like Adolis Garcia, Luis Robert, Dalton Varsho, Cedric Mullins, & Mike Yaz.
Similarly on defense, he played fewer innings than rookie prodigies Michael Harris & Julio Rodriquez and has more OAA.
He's not going to hit .300. He's not going get flirt with .900 OPS. He's probably never going to have a 30-100. But he fills a need at the back of our lineup and gives you plus defense in a critical position.
This now ends the meeting of the Chazzyfiz Fanatics.
