There isn't a ton of data on minor leaguers in the public realm like there is for big leaguers so its harder to pinpoint. Walks were not great most of the year.

When someone goes down, he's probably the first man up unless they want to bring Bielak back again. The bullpen is full, but someone with triple digits in the tank may find a spot if someone falters. Regardless of how, he's 27. His trade value ain't much, but if he proves he can contribute, we'll control him through his prime on the cheap.

Something weird must have been going on last year. He started out fine then went on a 9 game stretch where his ERA was north of 8. He was getting rocked then hit the IL with a shoulder strain. When he came back, he was lights out minus one bad outing. His ERA was 2.82, 0.83 if you take out the 0.2 IP blowup.

I think this is how we handle our catcher situation for 22.

1. Maldy gets the lion share. - 67%
2. We sign/trade for another vet. (see Alfaro) - 25%
3. Diaz catches a little bit here and there but provides a right-handed bat with upside at C, backup 1B, and DH - 8%

Random tidbit on Diaz. He has a pretty big reverse split for every season but 2018. He makes less sense as a DH vs a lefty to give Brantley the day off.

Definitely a big year coming up for Dubin and a few of our other pitching prospects lingering at AAA. We'll almost certainly need a 7th starter at some point this year and possibly a few spot starts from an 8th. Time to make a move or likely get passed up by a few of our young nasty Dominicans in 2024.

Any good vet alternatives to Alfaro who signed a minor league deal with Boston?

Gary Sanchez. Jkjkjk.

With Alfaro and Barnhart off the board, it seems less likely that we'll pickup a cheap vet. Austin Romine and Robinson Chirinos are out there. At this point, we might just be better off rolling with the rookies behind Maldy. If something happens to Maldy and the rookies aren't up to the challenge, we can make a trade.

He & JP France are both on the 40 man and getting up there in years. Time to see if they can make it happen. Otherwise, we may need those roster spots.

He's 39 now. I would guess he's going to be told he can no longer play the children's game.

There are no good options. Alfaro wasn't a great option either. There is a reason the padres told him bye and the Sox only gave him a minor league deal.

As things stand now, how are you setting the roster?

Here is what I am thinking:

1. Maldonado
2. Abreu
3. Altuve
4. Bregman
5. Pena
6. Brantley (55/45 LF/DH)
7. McCormick
8. Tucker
9. Alvarez (45/55 DH/LF)
---
10. Dubon
11. Hensley
12. Diaz
13. trade for a catcher

Dubon - back up CF, RF; 3rd string INF; ideally is inserted when a guy needs a day off vs a LHP
Diaz - back up 1B; 3rd string C, DH option
Hensley - back up 3rd, SS, 2nd; DH option
TBD Catcher - ideally a LHH, who can give Maldy 1-2 days off a week.

This assumes Diaz can play 1B well enough to get a couple of dozen starts over the season.

You think Meyers starts the year at AAA? It will be interesting to see how he's handled now that his reported biggest fan (Click) is gone.

Unless he really shows out in ST, I think Dusty likes Dubon better. He's such a nice roster piece for the fact he can play everywhere.

If you replaced Hensley or Diaz with Jake, how many innings is Jake actually playing. Alvarez/Brantley will get 95% of LF. Is Jake providing enough value to share backing up CF/RF with Dubon?

Remember that Chas always has an awful spring training.

Hopefully he has enough track record to not have to win his job again. ~650 PA over 2 years where he's been above avg offensively and quite good defensively.

We seem to have avoided getting burned too often on traded away prospects and young players. What's the worst miss? Hader? Teoscar next? Musgrove turned out to be good but 2 years of elite Cole was worth it. Anyone else?

Not a good list for our young MVP. He develops a little plate discipline and he'll take the next step we're all hoping for/expecting.

Jury is still out, but the guy we traded to get Vasquez last year was tearing up AAA. I think he was positionally blocked, but he may turn out to be decent.

It seemed like his playoff surge was at least partially due to a big improvement in this category. We'll see if he can sustain it over 162 but he showed alot in October.

oh, we're going to see plenty of Dubon in 2023.

would expect about 200 plate appearances

He is locked up until 2028 already. Worry about that in 2026 and beyond. He's already missed one entire year (albeit a short one) hurt.

Huh. I would have expected Altuve to be on that list just from September and October.
