Contreras has an .844 OPS --- a mark that is only surpassed on the Astros by Yordan and Altuve.

he would become the primary catcher.

not leaving his stick on the bench

There's also DH depending on how Brantley recovers. But do not see the downside here other than the Astros giving up maybe 9th best prospect.

Team is serious WS contender, as much b1tching as there is on here about the bench and certain positions underwhelming offensively funny how these trade rumors are met with scorn.

Lol no **** but really seems like jv and framber would still want maldy as their personal catcher. But like you said they may have 0 say in who their catcher is.

On a different topic, after this 3 game series in Oakland, the Astros only have to go to the west coast one more time all season. There is one series at the beginning of September in Angels stadium. Astros after dark is nearing it's end for the year, and I for one am thankful. Those games are too late out here.

How sexy would this be?

Altuve
Tucker
Bregman
Alvarez
Contreras
Bell
Pena
Brantley
Meyers

Bench
Diaz
Gurriel
McCormick
Maldonado

Tell me that lineup wouldn't give up a ridiculous edge. Go all in. It wouldn't even cost THAT much to make it happen.

Machete isn't going to be the backup, even if we get Contreras.

A top 20ish hitter in baseball wouldn't start over someone who's 37% worse than the avg big leaguer after a red hot 2-3 week streak?

Time for a game of "Would You Rather"

Would You Rather

Have a player streaking over the last 17 games to hit 40 points over his career average, 250 points over his career OPS, and 80 points over his wRC+ the last 2 seasons

or

Have a player that has maintained or been slightly above his career average, OPS, and wRC+ for the entirety of 2022

??

With the uncertainty of Brantley and Alvarez, why couldn't Contreras be our primary DH and spot starter at C when Maldy needs a break?

What Machete has going for him is that Castro's bat died this season.

Hits a couple home runs and now everything's ok. Lol

You wouldn't have a backup catcher for Maldy if Contreras DHs.

The team literally changed the order and skipped guys so JV can pitch when he wanted….he will have whomever he wants catch him

And what happened if Maldy gets injured? You burn the DH? This scenario would have Lee staying on the team. Teams don't use their second catcher as the DH

Yuli and Uncle Mike aren't exactly young and the latter is dealing with an injury that the team hopes "time" will heal. Both also free agents after this season. Also sounds like Castro is officially done. Makes sense team is targeting Contreras.

For what it's worth...

All of our starting pitchers, with the exception of Urquidy, have better "stats" with Castro as the catcher than Maldonado. Luis Garcia is kind of a coin flip, as opponents' AVG, OBP, and SLG are all slightly higher with Castro, but ERA is a LOT lower.

...but all the pitchers love Maldy and he calls a great game

I pointed this out earlier. Look at the standard fielding section on his baseball reference here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/contrwi01.shtml#standard_fielding . He has played a lot of other positions. If he can still do that, he said a lot more value and there's potential to combine him and maldy in the field and lineup.

Check out the games started on that stat page. He hasn't started a game at something other than C or DH since 2019 and even then it was just 3 games that year. He started just 2 games in the OF that year.

In fact since his rookie year, the most games he started in the outfield in a single year was 6 and that was his 2nd year in the league which was 5 years ago. The guy is only a Catcher/DH only at this stage of his career and to think the Astros would start him anywhere else is hilarious.

It's got nothing to do with hitting and everything to do with handling the pitchers. They have to have so much rapport and the pitcher has to trust the catcher enormously to be really great out there. It's like trading for the 15 point a night 7 footer who sits on the perimeter shooting threes and benching your guy who averages 12 boards and 3 blocks a game.

If you went in the Astros club house and said who is the Team MVP, Martin wouldn't win, but I guarantee you he'd be top 5.

Let's say the trade does happen, but it's an 8/31 trade. Does he still start over Maldy at that point where Maldy has caught 80% of the season?

In my opinion, I don't think so. I think the only way he starts, as catcher, is if the trade happens before the beginning of August.

If this hand issue with Yordan continues and Brantley doesn't return, I am not sure now much Contreras would start at all as catcher. I personally feel the Astros are essentially targeting him to DH and catch maybe 2 games a week.

That's all fine and well in the regular season. In the playoffs, when you get 2 guys on base in a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning, I don't care how well your catcher handles the pitchers if he's walking up to the dish batting .180. The other guy can read the scouting report just as well.

Well…..the trade deadline is 8/2 so I can guarantee he will play 0 games as an Astro if the trade doesn't happen before then

Went to Braves new Park for first time today..... setting is beautiful and i got PTSD from all the WS Champ **** everywhere

That being said.... my lord they need a roof, it was ****in HOT!!! Which caused more people to be on the concourse than their sears resulting in a charlie foxtrot of a traffic Jam all over the park. Any stadium south of the Mason Dixon line should be mandated to have air conditioning lol.

All that aside the battery overall is awesome and a genius concept
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

Machete is slashing .240/.309/.580 in 17 games in July with 7 R, 11RBI and 5 HR. Yes it's a smaller sample size of 17 games but it's also 50 ABs. It's not super small.

Will it continue? Who knows. The eye test says he is making better contact and he looks to have changed his stance a bit.

I wonder if this trend would cause Click to re-evaluate looking for a backup this season. I guess the question is how much are you willing to expend for what would be a backup catcher? I'm with Bearkat. The staff and players have openly supported Machete's work and prep before games.

13 more games and someone is going to have to look you in the eye and tell you this is real.

Of course Maldy's pace likely won't persist, and Carpenter is 2 for his last 14, so neither is real, nothing nefarious, and just the result of small sample sizes.
