I'm not a Dusty fan. But the amount of *****ing and second guessing at winning 5 games in 4 days against the Yankees and then at Seattle is pretty remarkable even for Texags standards.

I believe the team wins in spite of Dusty.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Put me in the camp of not wanting Contreras knowing he won't get a single start in the post season. If he's just going to backup Maldy and pinch hit, I'm not a fan of giving up legitimate prospect for a few ABs in the playoffs. Spend that capital on Bell and/or an elite lefty reliever.

I completely agree. There's no reason to give to quality prospects for a rental that there is really no reason to pay for.

Remember when Hinch became a verb here, meaning to screw up.

Lol yes. Two straight series sweeps and armchair Texags think they can do better

Contreras would really fix the batting order...with his .372 on-base %

the 7-8-9 hitters would probably be:

7. Pena
8. Yuli
9. Meyers

that's a really strong bottom 3

He basically just pitched the equivalent to a 10 inning perfect game.

My apologies for ruffling feathers. I came to discuss Astro baseball on a forum for Astro baseball. I do not "think I can do better". However, I believe this ball club is pretty damn good and would make any half way competent manager look good. Even the best managers in baseball make mistakes.

We are pretty darn spoiled that we have to nitpick the team to pieces for entertainment because we just keep winning. Good times, indeed!

Couch-coaching is part of being a fan. Doesn't matter who is manager or coach, I will second-guess them.

Good enough to start 30 games for the Cubs for the postseason, including a WS title, but couldn't do it here? He's declined but he's not terrible back there.

He also was on the same page with those guys all year, right?

I'm not saying don't do it, I just wonder the effect beyond the batting order. He's a vet, but would obviously be a backup. Would back up playing time give him enough meaningful starts with the entire staff that you'd trust him in a high leverage post season game receiving the ball?

except Contreras won't be an every day player so you might get that lineup 2 games a week max. Maldy is the everyday catcher and when the playoffs come around Contreras won't start at all so you are basically giving up really good prospects for a spot pinch hitter or insurance policy for the catcher position.

Sure he can do it and would be a better offensive catcher than Maldy, but its been made extremely clear that Maldy is the only catcher starting if healthy

Extremely? Why are we interested in trading for him?

Apparently our buddy Phil Nevin got tossed last night. It was his 3rd ejection since being named interim manager. He got tossed after Ohtani hit a HR. Dude is going to have to mellow out or have an aneurism. Turn again managing a team that is 15 under .500 and 23.5 back before Aug 1 will do that to you.

Seems like all the starters really like/want maldy to be their catcher. I assume that is where the exteremly comes from?

My opinion only but it sure seems like there was a push from the team to make it known through the players pushing it and then through the local media that their faith in Maldy's ability behind the plate is more important than his lack of offense.

Contreras has an .844 OPS --- a mark that is only surpassed on the Astros by Yordan and Altuve.

he would become the primary catcher.

not leaving his stick on the bench

Machete is slashing .240/.309/.580 in 17 games in July with 7 R, 11RBI and 5 HR. Yes it's a smaller sample size of 17 games but it's also 50 ABs. It's not super small.

Will it continue? Who knows. The eye test says he is making better contact and he looks to have changed his stance a bit.

I wonder if this trend would cause Click to re-evaluate looking for a backup this season. I guess the question is how much are you willing to expend for what would be a backup catcher? I'm with Bearkat. The staff and players have openly supported Machete's work and prep before games.
