Shut up. He's at the fight. I bet Lance is there too.

I was in favor of the JV deal at the time but it is interesting we are willing to give mega bucks for 2 years to a 36 year old pitcher (the most injury prone position) but won't go 8 years on a guy who is 27. I get that the length is a risk but any pitcher is a risk and every year of wear and tear adds to that risk. The fact that they haven't had a serious injury in the past isn't really relevant. A torn UCL seems to come for them all.

If he signs with the Yankees that would be one of the most disgusting things I've seen.

I think the sweet spot is 33.5 a year.

JV was dominant and had a fairly reliable track record in terms of health. It was only 2 years, covered by insurance, so low-risk.

And the risk isn't so much that a player with a megacontract ends up getting injured for most of it. The risk is that the player isn't injured and then has awful performance. In the former scenario, insurance kicks in. With the latter scenario, you eat the cost and would rather have someone else in his position.

If we knew Carlos would be a dominant SS for the duration of a 300M contract there'd be no hesitation to signing him.

When reading the signs goes wrong.

You're speculating on how the insurance works (did it cover 100% for both years?) and excluding the cost of whatever premium they had to pay for a 36 year old arm with 3,000 innings. Not to mention the very real impact it had on our luxury tax calculations that altered our approach to free agency. It was a costly decision. As I said, I was in favor of it at the time, I am simply saying it was definitely risky.

6 years for $210M seems close

It was costly for the short term, not the long term. The former not paying off does significantly less harm…we still made it to the WS after all

So basically what some of us said. 5/160 was a starting point.

I think 6/210 is pretty good for both sides.

Throw in some opt outs and let's do the damn thing.

Best case he decides he wants to meet in the middle and go 8 year deal. But I still think he wants the 10+

Do you think he will get that though? That's a separate question.

What are the odds that Opening Day starts on time?

I hope a lockout doesn't jeopardize the start of the new season.

Probably but at a lower AAV. At some point he will have to decide which is more important.

The only way 6/210 is remotely possible is if there are opt outs (that favor Correa). Otherwise, no way he signs a 6 year contract when there will be teams offering 10-12 years.

I dont think he takes it but I think that's about the best deal for both sides.

Anymore years and it's not good for the club and any less money and it's not good for Carlos.

He will get offered 10 years 300 MM from somebody for sure.

Another way to think about it:

- How much does that few million per more year change your life when you're already making that much? Doesn't being where you want to be bridge that gap?

- How much further does your dollar stretch in Houston vs CA or NY?

- The way salaries are going, might he not get more per year at age 31? Yes, there's a chance he's washed up or injured and has to play for less of that time, but if he gambles on himself he could end up getting quite a bit more per year the next time around.

Not as if he wouldn't be set for life already taking what the Astros have on the table and investing it. Plus this is surely not the Astros final offer, crane will go a little higher, I just doubt he's going to go longer which is a philosophy I agree with.

I'd be interested in what Click's thoughts are about Story. His home / road splits are pretty extreme but he's solid defensively and a great baserunner. I still think if you are gonna pay big money it's for your guy and not a mercenary.

How is Story any more of a mercenary than Carlos? If anything Carlos is more of a mercenary. Story might (understandably) want to get out of a situation where he's only gotten to play in five postseason games. Carlos could hardly find a better situation to win championships in.

To be fair, I don't begrudge anyone for trying to get the most they can when they can….but do we think Altuve and Bregman could have gotten more money than they did by waiting and testing free agency? There are mercenaries and then there are mercenaries.

What a load of uninformed ***** It's already been reported the offer is up to 6/205. I'm not sure what Altuve's offer has anything to do with Correa. If anything it shows that the Astros were willing to guarantee him 7 years out and pay him thru year 34. That means there could potentially be more room to grow with Correa.

Altuve would have been coming off MVP & World Series championship. He would have made more for sure

Bregman would still be in arbitration now

We all know how this story ends. Just like it's going to with George. We miss him and he's great when he's healthy but he's hurt a lot and by the end of the contract we are so relieved or not the ones trying to figure out how to build a competitive roster while paying $40 million a year to a now third baseman that plays 100 games a year.
