about the Phillies...

they have been very bad at payroll roster management in recent years.

committed 2022 payroll is around $170 MM already.

six players are making between $15 MM and $27 MM per season.

Harper, Wheeler, and Realmuto are each making around $25 MM...they are signed for another 3 years. Harper thru 2031.

the Phillies will have to find some trade partners to get rid of other guys' salaries to afford Correa

What does being on an NL team matter anymore for ZG?

Grienke has always considered himself more of an all around ballplayer than just a pitcher. He wants to hit.

Remember, he was a SS in HS and I can't remember if he'd already been in the majors for a while or if it was late in the minors but he wanted to quit pitching, go back to lower-class ball and come back up as a SS.
When the DH become universal he won't be hitting in either league

Is full DH a sure thing?
The way its being thrown around it sure seems like its the main thing that is changing

Verlander is missing from here

I was perplexed by Strom's interview posted on the Astros website. He seemed to waffle and mentioned being open to being a pitching coach for another organization. But said definitively that he would not be back with the Astros. Anyone else get the vibe that he wasn't happy here or maybe didn't click with Click (or Dusty)?

He said he wanted to give the younger guys a chance, and if he stayed, someone would poach them. He feels like he's done all he can here. Mentioned he didn't like the year round travel. I think he takes a consulting position if he doesn't completely retire. The man is 73, I don't fault him for wanting to hang it up one bit.

How do they compare offensively?
Bryant is better, but Taylor isn't bad.

So what kind of deals are 29/30 year old players like those two going to get? I ask b/c at some point, if the years/dollars required start to get up there, wouldn't a team just be better off with the younger player in Carlos?

Obviously, a team has to pinpoint the cutoff mark for it to make sense, though.

I know there are salary numbers in your pics...but I don't know how relevant they will be to this year's free agency market.

I was wondering if he'd instead work with the Skeeters, local college/high school pitchers, etc.

Semien, Seager and Story will get QO's so you can cross them off the list. Baez is your best bet and the article previously posted projects he will get less than $100M. He's about average defensively but obviously the bat has some serious power. You can't help but think there's some upside if he could learn to lay off some pitches.

I'd still put the odds on Peña.
Why are you so convinced that is true?
When was the last time we signed a guy who got a QO?

I'd like us to make a run at Rodon as well. LH Aces with his stuff are unfair.

That's your only reasoning? Generally, we don't have tons of money to spend or a huge need. When we've had major gaps, we've gone out in made trades. With a lesser farm system, open cap space, the fact we're not longer being penalized, and the likelihood of getting more picks from QOs doesn't it seem a lot more likely now?

He'd probably retire before playing here. He was one of the vocal players bashing on the Astros for not getting punished enough.

No. Interested in a friendly wager? No posting on the baseball board the first month of the season to whoever is wrong.

This would be my potential lineup

1. Altuve
2. Tucker
3. Bregman
4. Alvarez
5. Gurriel
6. Brantley
7. Siri / Meyers
8. Diaz / Leon/ Pena
9. Maldonado / Castro / Lee

I think Bregman will have a nice bounce back so I'd put him at the 3 hole until it becomes an issue. I also suspect either Yuli or Mike might have a regression at some point due to age.

Who I would try to sign:
- Noah Syndergaard
- Kris Bryant (slide Bregman to short)
- another solid bullpen arm
Don't forget that Pedro Leon can also play OF. If both him and Pena end up being the best out of the young prospects, they could both be on the field at the same time with Pena at SS and Leon in CF.

Leon hit poorly in the Arizona fall league as well. Not an option for 2022.
I looked at the free agent list, and I'd make a run at Corey Knebel for sure
I think the Dodgers go with Turner at SS and let Seager go, so that might work for the Astros

Regarding Correa, the link on one of the earlier pages with the top FA predicted CC would get 8/264. I know it's said he's gone, but I'd be on board with that type of deal.

Astros free agents:

-Carlos Correa
-Justin Verlander
-Zack Greinke
-Kendall Graveman
-Yimi Garcia
-Brooks Raley
-Marwin Gonzalez

Brooks Raley is not a free agent. He's got 3 more arbitration years through 2025. Am I missing something here?

When we traded for him last year, he was on a 2 yr contract with the Reds and was DFA'd. We picked him and that contract up. I think since he came from overseas, he was technically not on the arbitration clock.

Yes.

the minor league contract Raley signed with the Reds over the winter actually contains a $2MM club option for the 2021 season and allows him to become a free agent thereafter.

Greinke wants to bat that much? Or just wants to go to a smaller market team again

I wouldnt be opposed to re-signing him for the right amount. You can never get too much pitching with his track record.

Didn't we sign Maldonado to a QO a few years back??
It was either a catcher or a pitcher from several years back if memory serves me correct.
