Fresh from 10 hours at a neighborhood swim team's time trials, I'm happy to report we're getting the best of both worlds when it comes to Joseph Tiberius Gallo these days. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs tonight, but also added a strikeout to the total. It's his third straight game with a strikeout, but I'm getting a bit uneasy with this "1 per night" trend. That's not going to catch Mark Reynolds.

For the season, Boss Gallo has 51 strikeouts in 35 games, good for a pace of 236.

The good news is that Eugenio Suarez failed to strike out tonight, although he certainly failed in general, going 0-for-4. Friday night he struck out twice, so he's at 47 strikeouts in 32 games, He's on pace for 238. If these two guys both head into September with 200 strikeouts each, I might have to consider live at-bat by at-bat updates.

I'm also considering some monthly features on some of the greatest whiffers of all time - try to make it a local connection with guys like Adam Dunn, Pete Incaviglia, Preston Wilson - the best of the best. If you have a nomination, let me know.

The man with the plan got back to form Sunday with 2 strikeouts in 4 at-bats, upping his total to a league-leading best of 53 for the year. The Rangers have played 36 games in 2021, putting him on pace for 239 strikeouts.

Joey is taking his one-man show on the road this week for a pair of games in San Francisco, an off day, then 3 games in Houston, which I'm sure will be very well received on this thread, especially if he hits a home run or two.

The Reds game got postponed yesterday, leaving Eugenio Suarez 6 strikeouts behind Sir Gallo, although he's also played 6 fewer games. In fact, this lack of games has caused Suarez to fall out of second place in the strikeout chase.

A new challenger to Boss Gallo's top spot has emerged in Oakland third baseman Matt Chapman, who is 2nd in the AL with 49 strikeouts in 36 games. Chapman, hitting a sweet .213 on the year, has turned up the pressure with 12 strikeouts in his first 32 at-bats of May. Somehow he's hitting .281 during that stretch. Chapman has never even been above 150 strikeouts in a single season so this is uncharted territory for him. Can he keep up under the pressure?

Suarez has fallen into a tie for first in the NL with Phillies' first baseman Rhys Hoskins, wwho was born during Spring Break of my freshman year at A&M (just a coincidence, no paternal inquiries needed). Hoskins has gone as high as 173 strikeouts in a season during the 2019 season.

The Swisher King returned to form last night, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the Rangers' offense cranked out a run in a 3-1 defeat in San Francisco.

That's 54 whiffs on the year for Jocephus. He is on pace for 237 this season.

Fun Fact: Gallo has struck out more times in 2021 than Tony Gwynn did in any complete season of his career. In fact, Gallo has struck out more times than Gwynn did in 1994-1996 (19+15+17=51 total).

Meanwhile Eugenio Suarez of the Reds got back into the swing (and miss) of things with a pair of strikeouts in the Reds' 14-1 win over the Pirates - a matchup of my two favorite 1970s baseball uniforms.
Suarez also hit a home run. Want to know how you can tell you're having a terrible season? When you hit a homer while going 1 for 4 and your average goes "up" to .134 and your slugging percentage to .319.

It was another day, another K for Joey Jo Jo Shabadoo Gallo, but the May to remember is kind of fizzling so far. Yes, he has 15 strikeouts in 11 games, but that's not the electrifying pace he set in April. Is the stress of being featured on TexAgs getting to him?

That's 55 for the year - a pace for 234 on the year.He also moved up to 671st all-time in career strikeouts with 727, passing Darren Daulton and Steve Yeager. And you know I'm going to start charting that progression every day, just because the list of names is hilarious and awesome.

Matt Chapman of the A's has taken over second place with 50. AL West? More like AL BEST.

Eugenio Suarez is stuck on 49. Is he just a flash in the strikeout pan? He's clearly the worst hitter in this competition, but he keeps putting the ball in play. He's an enigma wrapped in a mystery.

I thought it would be interesting to compare Gallo against Mark Reynolds' record-setting year of 2009, when he lit it up for 223 strikeouts in 155 games. He actually struck out more than 200 times 3 years in a row, and is 9th all-time with 1,927 whiffs. The Rangers have played 38 games so far in 2021. Through 38 games in 2009, Reynolds had 50 strikeouts. His real brilliance came in October, where he finished the year with 7 strikeouts in his last two games.

Today's Trivia Question: Only six players have struck out more than 2,000 times in their careers. Can you name them without looking it up?

Hank Aaron is 112th - just 1,383 in 23 seasons 60 per year. Aaron never broke 100 strikeouts or led the league in strikeouts.

Babe Ruth is 135th with 1,330. He led the lead 5 times in strikeouts, but never struck out 100 times in a season.
His high was 93 in 1931, but since he also hit 41 home runs, drove in 130 runs, and batted .393 that year, the Yankees let it slide.

These stats were from 1923 (not 1931), but also of interesting note is that this season Ruth had the highest single-season WAR for position players ever.

Hello my fellow Gallonauts! Before we get into the meat of the update, I have to shout out our hero for his unbelievable outfield assist in the bottom of the ninth last night to send the game to extra innings.

It makes me happy because I sort of hate Chas McCormick. Actually, I hate his parents for naming him Chas. Either name the kid Chase which is not quite as terrible, or name him Charles and let people call him Chazz if they so choose. But putting Chas on the birth certificate is a crime against humanity. He grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania on top of that. No matter how old you are or were you're from, if someone tells you about this guy named Chas who's a hot sheet baseball player from West Chester, there is not a person alive who doesn't already know that he's a d*bag.

You'd think maybe Chas could go by his middle name to avoid that d*bag designation, but taking a look online last night informed me that his middle name is Kane. You don't name a kid Kane unless he's destined to grow up and be the bad guy in a kickboxing movie.

On to the main attraction! Joe Joe Gallo, your life is calling. He gave the Houston fans what they wanted to see at the plate. 0 for 5 with a strikeout in his first at-bat and another in extra innings. He's up to 57 now and has a 4-strikeout lead over Matt Chapman of the A's. He's also on pace for 237 this season.

The 2 K's last night gets Joey up to 729 for his career, tying him with Yan Gomes and Jose Vizcaino for 668th all-time. In the next week, he'll likely catch up with Roger Maris and Honus Wagner. Three names you often see together - Maris, Wagner, Gallo.

Today's Trivia: What's the record for the most consecutive strikeouts in consecutive at-bats over a series of games by a player? There are 3 people tied at this #, but I want the #.

It was actually in the 10th he mowed down Chas, and without it our hero wouldn't have had the chance to K in the 11th. Smart play by Gallo, extra inning K's could be critical.

I am going to guess 11 and I have no idea what players... you mentioned that Mark Reynolds struck out 7 times in a row to end the season the record was set so you have to think it is more than 7 times.

The record is 12, held jointly by Sandy Koufax, who did it over a series of starts in 1965, Reggie Jackson, who did it in 5 games, and the legendary Steve Balboni, who only needed 4 games to do it in 1985 when he led the league in strikeouts with 166. Balboni was a poor man's Rob Deer when it came to strikeouts., sort of overlooked because he was on such a great KC team with Brett, McRae, Willie Wilson, Saberhagen, etc.

I wonder if they made Sabermetrics jokes back in the 80s. You'd have to think they did, but without social media it was almost a tree falling in the woods conundrum.
