there is no sense of urgency to win games in the 1st half of the season. I wonder if things would be different if the A's had a 5 game lead.

but with Oakland milling around too. There is no rush to play anybody

Right. Going into a season with elite starting pitching and Harris/Pressly/Osuna closing out games is a luxury, not the norm. We needed to spend some time early in the season putting our young guys into higher leverage spots to see what they're made of. Our regular season goal isn't just to win games. It's to win as many games as possible while developing talent and keeping the horses fresh for the stretch run. Optimizing those things is difficult and can leave the organization in a tough spot if the guys we're counting on to step up don't do so.

The first couple months have been a success IMO. We're only a couple games out of first. We know the offense is good. We know the starting pitching is good. The bullpen is not good but we've got time to get it fixed. We've learned that our young bullpen arms aren't ready to be counted on and what they need to work on in Sugar Land before they deserve another shot. The re-assessment phase has begun and some changes are in order.

Despite the glaring bullpen weakness atm, we have a good team this year and are among the handful of teams that can win a WS if things go well at the right time. We won a WS in 2017 and almost made the WS last year with relatively weak bullpens. Maybe we're not quite as good as we were overall from 2017-2019, but that's ok. That was a historically good run that couldn't last forever. We also have $33 million sitting on the sidelines right now with JV that we could have otherwise used to bolster our bullpen. In a way, this is kind of a rebuilding year. We'll have tons of $$ this offseason to address weaknesses (Greinke gone, JV back but for much less than $33mm, Correa possibly gone) and set ourselves a nice run of elite ball from 2022-2024. If 2020-21 are our "worst" seasons of the 2017-2024 stretch, I'm perfectly ok with "worst" still putting us in WS contention.

The Red Sox are 28-3 when they score at least four runs in a game.

Astros have blown seven of 12 save chances in May. The bullpen’s 10 losses in May are the most in MLB in that span. The 5.20 relief ERA this month is 26th in MLB.

I'm sure there's way more context to what he said that is missing there. He probably gave that response out of frustration after getting asked a bunch of questions in a row about it.

You're right, I was too harsh. No one could have anticipated it...

But he could have reacted to it. I wouldn't even call it a TOOTBLAN, and it would have been super heads up if he had been engaged enough to be ready to move, but he could have easily been on 3rd if he had reacted quickly.
