This may be a dumb question but in addition to the interference the ball hit him on the leg doesn't that make him automatically out?

He's not out if the fielders hit him with a throw. If the batted ball hits him, he's out.

Not on a throw. If the ball was hit and it hit him in the field of play before a fielder could make a play on it then he would be out. But if you peg someone by accident then it's not an out.
