I wouldn't be upset if Diaz was left at home and Straw and Tucker make the roster.

Straw can play the infield and Tucker be the emergency 1B.

Diaz just doesn't bring anything to the table and Straw's speed and Tucker's bat (so far) are more valuable than anything Diaz gives you.

But Diaz is multi position which could have value in more ways than one especially in WS at NL ballpark . I do like toros defense over Diaz though

Would think toro is on post season roster due to Correa re-injury risk in playoffs.
So straw or tucker...that's a tough one

If Correa truly knows himself in the playoffs, you can replace him on the roster with Toro starting the next game. Straw can fill in at shortstop as well if need be to finish a game.

A couple of team stats and records from today.

This was our 55th home win of the season. That ties the team record for home wins and we have 9 more home games to go.

This was our second win by 20 or more runs this season. The last team to do that? The 1939 NYY. They did it 3 times that season.

Obviously the 11 doubles were a club record. So were the 6 doubles in the third.

We are 16-1 against the Mariners. The 16 wins against a single club in a season is a record and we still have 2 more games against them.

Thought of leaving Diaz off playoffs never occurred to me but it is interesting . A lot of value can come from straw at 1st base pinch running in crucial situation.
Would be curious how each of the borderline players hit against relievers this year, because that's really what's important for their roles in playoffs

what about tucker over reddick at RF? it'll never happen, but I'd love to see it

Maybe. But not over Reddick in Springer's pants

I find it interesting in today's version of baseball how seemingly unloyal as fans we are to proven players. Earlier this year we had some folks ready to ditch La Pina. Tucker hasn't done jack **** yet. Definitely not a leader in the clubhouse yet. I don't get the rush to start replacing our roster right now.

If you play the best 9 then you're more likely to win.

Tucker was a first round draft pick who climbed up the ranks very fast. He's projected to be a better player than Reddick. He may be now.

Playing RF in MMP is much different than playing LF.

Reddick has been garbage the entire season outside of the first month.

That's a pretty large sample size, the guy is on a downward trend in his career.

Tucker just had over 30 HRs this season. Simply put he's a bigger offense threat than Reddick.

I would be very surprised if Josh isn't traded in the off-season.

Dombrowski out in Boston. You would think that a WS win would buy a year or two.

You guys think they'll come after Taubman?

Reddick is definitely on the decline, but let's not compare numbers from AAA to MLB, especially in an offensive league like the PCL where Jack Mayfield hit .287 with 26 bombs. I like Tucker a lot and think he's a future all star, but his AAA season was not that great. It was similar to Reddick, with long stretches of ineffectiveness.

Dombrowski got what he deserved for getting the Red Sox into payroll prison such that resigning Mookie Betts is not a given after 2020 (because he's going to cost so much).

Price, Sale, and Eovaldi will make a combined $79 MM for the next 3 seasons --- that's a staggering commitment to three injury-prone pitchers

Hitting 34 HRs is not similar to Reddick's 12...regardless of minor vs major leagues.

Tucker almost had 3 HRs already in his few ABs. His bat has a LOT more pop and much higher exit velo than Reddick.

To say they have been equally ineffective is a joke. Tucker has had a good season in the minors, reddick has not had a good season in the majors.

I'd rather take the risk that Tucker can turn it on in the playoffs than Josh returning to his mediocre self. The downside to Tucker is that he ends up hitting like Josh.

Reddick is no la pina, we know what he's capable of

I think anyone calling for Tucker to make the playoff roster over Reddick is severely underestimating Reddick's A) defense and B) his leadership/experience in the clubhouse.

You don't just go replacing entrenched vets for unproven September callups on your playoff roster after winning ~105 games. There's a reason they didn't leave 2017 Beltran and 2018 McCann of those playoff rosters. You take a hit in on-field production for what their presence in the clubhouse gives you.

Perfectly fine with giving Tucker a roster spot to pinch hit or a start or two if there's a bad matchup along the way but leaving Reddick off the playoff roster would be a mistake.

You can't cherry pick a single stat to compare guys at different levels of play. Yes, Tucker has more pop, but he also struck out twice as much at the AAA level.

And for the entire months of April and July, Tucker hit below .200 with an OPS below .700 in an offensive league. That is ineffectiveness. The inconsistency is the main thing keeping Tucker from the big leagues right now.

When it comes to the playoffs, he and Reddick are both a roll of dice right now, but with Reddick showing signs of life again, I lean towards the guy that has at least seen major league pitching all year. If he slumps between now and the playoffs, then there's a decision to make.

Like Ag07 said , if you have read anything about this team, you know Reddick is a huge clubhouse leader. If you've played sports at any level from high school on up, you cannot understate the importance of that role. He could be hitting .125 and still make the playoff roster, thinking otherwise just shows you don't know much about team sports.

To me the biggest benefit of Reddick is he can play right field and has made some incredible catches...lets face it, with our lineup having an inconsistent bat in the 8 or 9 hole is nothing compared to a costly error in the field Tucker could potentially make (I believe the Rangers lost a World Series that way).

If we had the Astros 80's or 90's lineup I might be more inclined to go with Tucker just to have the potential pop in the lineup but we have pop up and down the order so give me the experienced vet who can play the field.

The playoff 25 (in my mind) as it sits right now..... obviously things will change over the next month.

1 Springer - CF
2 Altuve - 2B
3 Bregman - 3B
4 Brantley - LF
5 Alvarez - DH
6 Correa - SS
7 Gurriel - 1B
8 Chirinos - C
9 Reddick - RF

BN - Maldonado (C)
BN - Diaz (IF)
BN - Marisnick (OF)
BN - Straw (UTIL, Pinch Runner)

SP - Verlander
SP - Cole
SP - Greinke
SP - Miley

RP - Osuna
RP - Pressley
RP - Harris
RP - Smith
RP - Rondon
RP - 2 of McHugh/ Peacock/ James
RP - Devo (I can't see them getting away from having a "lefty specialist"

Left off : Tucker, Toro, Biagini, Framber, Sneed, Urquidy

I could see one more bat added for the first round.... probably depends on the matchup.

I don't see how you can still call him a "lefty specialist" this year. His numbers vs lefties are a lot worse compared to righties.

Cole at 281 Ks on the season...300 seems to be a lock.

Cole is going to get PAID in a couple of months. That will be a boat full of cash for somebody to dole out, and he'll have earned every bit of it.

i think James' performance since coming off the IL has moved him into a lock.

And honestly i would take Cy Sneed over McHugh or Peacock just as an emergency long relief guy. Those other two have been close to worthless all season long.

I don't disagree with you, but it still seems like the Astros use him that way. There's a reason I put him last on the list.

Stubbs

But I think that's a waste of a spot.

If both Chorizo and Machete go down just throw in the flag. It's just not meant to be. At that point Jake can catch.

Think you're probably right on James.

I think Peacock and McHugh have experience, especially playoff experience, that is valuable over Sneed (similar to the Reddick conversation above)... but Sneed could play his way in over the next month. We still haven't seen Peacock either.

I've just lost any hope for McHugh and Peacock. They've attempted to come back and right the ship multiple times this year and just haven't been able to do it.

Their season long struggles plus sitting out this long gives me no hope either one of them can come back and be effective in the playoffs.
