The Mets would be incredibly stupid to pitch Thor before the deadline. If there's any possibility of trading him then he should be scratched.

The Astros and Giants are "engaged" in discussions regarding San Francisco lefty Madison Bumgarner, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). Long considered a major rental starter for this summer's trade market, Bumgarner's availability has increasingly come in question as the Giants have unexpectedly risen in the standings.

I'm not concerned about anybody we add.

These are guys are pros, they're playing to win, and they're joining one of the best clubhouses in the game. None of them are going to purposefully underperform because they're unhappy.

Plus MadBum is still pitching for a new contract.

The Giants won't trade MadBum. They are 2.5 GB in the WC and three of the teams ahead of them (Cards, Cubs, Brewers) are all playing each other this next week.

I would not be shocked if they didn't move the single deadline back to Aug 15 next year. So many teams are still in it that no real movement can happen.

FWIW I don't think the NYM are for sure keeping Stroman.

They got him for such a low price I wouldn't be surprised to see them flip him for a bigger haul.

That wouldn't be hard to do.

Is it wrong that I would prefer to bolster the bullpen over a SP? I am content with Miley as the third started at this point, I would feel better about adding more to the BP.

That's fair. In perfect world you get 6-7 innings out of Verlander/Cole, maybe 5 out of Miley and leave it to the BP to button up what he has done. There is no McCullers or Morton that would be able to come in and give you 3+, assuming Peacock is not back to true form. And yes, I know I am not giving Miley a lot of credit for what he has done, it just seems in the playoffs the SP and BP work changes.

I think adding a SP will by default boost the pen. Peacock/Urquidy/Armenteros or whoever we have been using as #4 and #5 would presumably switch to relief for any postseason games.

Plus our BP is pretty legit. We have the 2nd lowest BP ERA in the AL. They're a good group.

Smith, James, Harris, Pressly, Osuna plus Peacock, McHugh

Yeah there's always room to improve the BP but it's not near as big a concern as a starter. Plus a top end starter like the ones we're in on we'll give those guys some rest.

Agreed. Not a big concern, but it would be nice to add a decent lefty to pen, like Tony Watson.

I would expect it would only cost about what we gave up for JV in '17. Plus AZ should chip in on his contract. He's still a very effective pitcher and he's not having to rely on heat so he should age okay. He also softens the blow of losing Cole & Miley next year.
